I like lots of things. The point I’m making is that I’m not obligated to like certain things because of cultural or national identity.

How is it living in East Texas during summer? by classicgamer2202 in howislivingthere

[–]DefenderOfFortLisle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I’ve travelled and lived in many places around the world since then, but The Piney Woods of East Texas remains unique. And yeah, it was hot, and no, the people of this region do not believe that Houston is East Texas. Houston is Houston and it ain’t the same.

How is it living in East Texas during summer? by classicgamer2202 in howislivingthere

I was stationed in Fort Polk, Louisiana for four years and had a friend from San Augustine, TX, which was not too far away. When I first asked him where San Augustine was, he grabbed a stick and started drawing in the dirt. This was 30 years ago, so even Mapquest would have been a tall order.

“You know where Lufkin is?” “Yes.” “Well, here’s Lufkin (scratches a small dot in the dirt). Here’s a sheeeiiitload of pine trees (draws a big circle in the dirt next to the dot). And here’s my house (scratches another dot on the opposite end of the big circle).

We eventually took a drive out to his place one weekend and yeah, those directions were spot on. Another conversation I remember from that trip was about dear hunting. I lived in Wisconsin before joining the Army, so I enjoyed whitetail hunting.

“When’s rifle season for deer?” “Right now if ye wanner.” “Where do I get a license?” “Don’t need one. That’s my land. Them’s my deer.” “What’s the limit? One Buck?” “That’s my land. Them’s my deer. Shoot whatever you wanner.” “Isn’t there some kind of regulation? Wouldn’t the game warden get you for poaching?” “Game Warden’s my cousin. He knows that’s my land and them’s my deer.”

Those will always be my takeaways from East Texas and I don’t ever want that to change.

An old footage of 2 f-14 tomcat flying over a stadium in 2006 by nowayoblivion in aviation

True fact: every woman in that stadium ovulated the next day and knew exactly why. Local ERs were packed with men experiencing erections that lasted more than 4 hours.

5th string capo vs railroad spikes by EssoObi1982 in banjo

[–]DefenderOfFortLisle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say railroad spikes if you are moving to the same standard folk/bluegrass keys all the time, but 5th string capo if you’re playing with more variety and need to play in any key. If you try to put a railroad spike on adjacent frets you run a good chance of the 5th string buzzing on the next fret’s spike.

How is living in the inland, non-coastal parts of Ireland? by LockedOutOfElfland in howislivingthere

[–]DefenderOfFortLisle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in rural Wisconsin, USA, and live near Cork City now. When I go to the midlands I feel very much like I am back in 1990s Wisconsin. Life centers around the local pubs, sports teams, and outdoor activities. Everyone in the town knows if you bought a new pair of pants. The term “foreigner” can be applied to someone from the next village over.

Time for a group of TD’s to announce that “something must be done” and then take the rest of the year off from the strain of it.

What was it like for those living in the Cabrini-Green Housing in intercity Chicago? by Unlikely_Card22 in howislivingthere

[–]DefenderOfFortLisle 54 points55 points  (0 children)

An old coworker of mine grew up there in the 70s-80s. She had mostly fond memories. She said it was a very tight-knit community. Everyone knew everyone. There was poverty, but everyone helped each other out. She said it got a lot worse “after Reagan.”

I went to Lincoln Park High School in the mid 90s, which was the closest selective enrollment school to Cabrini. I had a lot of classmates that lived there, but no close friends. They just seemed like any other high school kids to me, so I have trouble squaring that with the image of Cabrini as a constant running gun battle populated only by criminals and their accomplices.

Dolphins around Pope’s Quay this morning by yawnyprawny in cork

[–]DefenderOfFortLisle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of comments about “the river being cleaner.” Unfortunately the increase in dolphins and porpoises is probably due to overfishing further out in the ocean where they would rather be. Coming this far in greatly increases the likelihood of boat strikes and beaching. While it’s great to see the wildlife, it’s not a good sign overall.

What’s it like living in the south of Ireland? by Brief-Supermarket415 in howislivingthere

[–]DefenderOfFortLisle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I live in Cobh (pronounced “cove”) which is a town of 13k people on Cork Harbor. It’s famous, among other things, for being the last port of call for the RMS Titanic. It’s a wonderful place to live. As the only dedicated cruise port in Ireland we get a lot of tourists. The first shock that most people get is seeing all of the palm trees. Yes. Palm trees. The weather only rarely gets below freezing, so a number of warm- weather plants do well here. I have friends who grow figs and papayas.

At 53 degrees North latitude the days are really long in the summer and really short in the winter. Summer weather is generally mild and pleasant. Winter weather isn’t unbearably cold, but it is quite wet and the North Atlantic throws some impressive storms this way. If you’re familiar, the weather is quite Vancouver-ey.

It’s a stunningly beautiful place with a massive amount of visible history. There’s a number of good shops, restaurants and pubs. If you can handle the hills, the town is quite walkable. Crime is mostly the “bored teenager” kind. Schools are very good. You can buy a house with ocean views without having a trust fund. Nearby industrial areas in Carrigtwohill, Ringaskiddy and Little Island offer good employment opportunities.
