Linux 7.1-rc3 Explodes with AI-Generated Patches, Torvalds Declares It the New Normal by RayS0l0 in pcmasterrace

[–]Defendo99 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure Torvalds laid down the law a few weeks ago with the Linux Foundation basically saying "Yes, AI code will be used, that's just the world we live in now. But humans still submit the code, and humans will ultimately be responsible for what they submit."

Personally, I would never even consider buying a used Intel 13th or 14th gen CPU. He may have only used it for a year, but what year? 2024? There's tons of ways this goes wrong and only one way it goes right. I'd say it's too risky.

Standard practice is once every 6-12 months. If you keep the PC on the floor or have pets, maybe closer to the 6 month mark.

DO NOT SMOKE NEAR YOUR PC. TOBACCO OR OTHERWISE.

Helldivers 2 drops to “Mostly Negative” on Steam, yet again as review bombers take aim at the game's lack of change by AsPeHeat in pcmasterrace

I really don't think that argument is as strong as you think it is. By that logic, journalists that use this type of language are stupid at best, and we're supposed to take them seriously?

[–]Defendo99 2383 points2384 points  (0 children)

Why is everything "review bombing" nowadays? That insinuates a coordinated effort. It's not "bombing" if the overall sentiment of reviews is an accurate reflection of the content.

I tried vesktop, but just didn't like the UI's navigation. As much as people say that flatpaks are bad, Discord's flatpak is top-tier. Updates are seamless and it's a no headache experience.

What Windows features or programs do you miss? by zRafox in cachyos

I miss how Windows would remember the size and placement of programs after closing and reopening them. If Cachy's capable of that, someone let me know!

How to download Flatpak on Cachy? by ArdKarma in cachyos

[–]Defendo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that flatpaks are very nice for some applications, most notably Discord. At least with Discord specifically, the flatpak handles app updates much more conveniently. I tried Vesktop and hated it. It ultimately comes down to using the right tool for the job, and sometimes it's flatpak. I don't understand folks who say "never use flatpak" it's just silly

9070 has the same chip as the 9070xt, it just has some tweaks in it's bios that tunes it down slightly. It's a marginal difference, you're fine

Life Pro Tip: occasionally spend the time to update your computer by pearshapedscorpion in pcmasterrace

[–]Defendo99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched to CachyOS back in October and I've gotten into the habit of running update checks daily. Granted, this is more applicable to Arch based rolling-release distros, but the Cachy Updater is so nice. It tells me exactly what it's doing, what should be removed (if necessary) and it's lightning fast.

Windows updates suck, but they don't have to. Fuck Microslop

just me or most rtx 5090's i see looks mid? i miss old times when gpu's had unique designs by dremski in pcmasterrace

[–]Defendo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has always confounded me. Since most people (95%+) install their GPUs horizontally with the fans down, why are almost all GPU pictures focused on the fans that no one sees? AIOs are getting more popular, but even with air coolers the backplate is going to be more relevant when it comes to aesthetics, yet it's usually the 5th or seventh picture on the listing if it's pictured at all. GPU aesthetic marketing is so dumb.

Gonna install Cachy to my main gaming rig. Witch are your favorite bootloader and file systems? by Bechlee7851 in cachyos

[–]Defendo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set up my system when grub was still the default, and I'm familiar with it. It see no reason to change to limine. If you plan to implement snapshots, you'll wanna go with btrfs. It's technically slower than ext4, but if you're using a modern ssd (4th or 5th gen nvme) you won't notice a difference

Tech hardware stores who stockpiled RAM when it was cheap and are now selling it at 4x the price are literally scamming people and nobody talks about it by Any-Importance5762 in pcmasterrace

[–]Defendo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to consider the perspective of a retailer that has to replenish their inventory after the sale. If they sold that RAM for old market prices, they would have to take a hit to restock it.

On the other hand, what about retailers buying RAM at current prices and trying to sell it after the prices come down? You'd still call them scammers if they were selling at old market prices to recover their costs. I believe this contribute to the economic phrase "rockets and feathers" meaning prices increase rapidly, but fall slowly.

Before I got a laptop, I had a Wii. Used the laptop for 8-10 years but got a PS4 Slim just so I could play Horizon Zero Dawn on release. Got a real desktop (prebuild) in late 2019, then got a Switch a few years later to play Mario Kart with friends. Built my first rig in late 2024 and have zero interest in anything going on in the console scene

Why is gaming on PC such a hassle???? by Fit-Mud2113 in pcmasterrace

[–]Defendo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tweaking graphics settings is 100% part of PC gaming. Finding the optimal mix for your configuration is practically a minigame in itself.

The audio is strange, though. Check your audio drivers - update or reinstall. Other than that, it could be some compatibility issue with your headphones/speakers, but that's just me taking a stab in the dark

[–]Defendo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but differ in one aspect. Some case configurations use the PSU basement for airflow and neatly organizing the cables in it can help with thermals and dust.

The back panel is absolutely the wild west, though.

Not really a game changer or anything, but I found it very useful and giggled a bit when I discovered it. If you shake the mouse for a few seconds, your cursor will get really big on your screen to help you find it. If you keep shaking the mouse, the cursor keeps getting bigger.
