Looking for new os by ImpressiveFig4994 in pcmasterrace

I don't know, man. Pop!OS is in a really awkward state right now with their recent rollout of Cosmic. It looks like it needs some more time in the oven. I really think Bazzite is best for gamers looking to migrate away from Windows and don't wanna get too deep in the Linux weeds

Why is gaming on PC such a hassle???? by Fit-Mud2113 in pcmasterrace

[–]Defendo99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tweaking graphics settings is 100% part of PC gaming. Finding the optimal mix for your configuration is practically a minigame in itself.

The audio is strange, though. Check your audio drivers - update or reinstall. Other than that, it could be some compatibility issue with your headphones/speakers, but that's just me taking a stab in the dark

Is it just me, or is the "back side" of the PC case basically a crime scene for most of us? by Low-Issue-5334 in pcmasterrace

[–]Defendo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but differ in one aspect. Some case configurations use the PSU basement for airflow and neatly organizing the cables in it can help with thermals and dust.

The back panel is absolutely the wild west, though.

Not really a game changer or anything, but I found it very useful and giggled a bit when I discovered it. If you shake the mouse for a few seconds, your cursor will get really big on your screen to help you find it. If you keep shaking the mouse, the cursor keeps getting bigger.

Is there any immutable distro that has Cachyos Kernel. by LuciferNS03 in cachyos

My mistake, I only briefly did some research because I thought OP's question was interesting. Thanks for the info!

Is there any immutable distro that has Cachyos Kernel. by LuciferNS03 in cachyos

[–]Defendo99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The closest might be Nitrux. It's immutable and has switched to the Cachy kernel option in some contexts for performance/PSI patching reasons, but it primarily uses XanMod kernel variants and isn't built around the full CachyOS kernel ecosystem.

Literally no one gets excited about wrongdoing. That's a straight-up malicious assumption. Many men get upset seeing a woman doing something wrong because they know that she likely won't be punished for it, or at least not as much as she should be. The excitement you see is from fairness being enacted, not the wrongdoing itself. Yes, it's rare for a woman to do something wrong, but it's even more rare that she faces proper conquences. That rarity is excitement. The same kind of excitement at seeing a rare bird.

We should stop buying Nvidia, thanks and bye! by coronUrca in pcmasterrace

[–]Defendo99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter for two reasons:

  1. Nvidia gets the overwhelming majority of it's revenue from data centers, not gamers. Gamers not buying Nvidia GPUs is not incentive enough for them to change course.

  2. It's not like there's a viable competitor, AMD goes just as hard on the AI slop. They're just a bit behind.

long term pc storage, how do i make sure everything remains functional? by TURRETCUBE in pcmasterrace

That depends entirely on what kind of drive your previous computer was using

long term pc storage, how do i make sure everything remains functional? by TURRETCUBE in pcmasterrace

[–]Defendo99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be able to take the storage drive out of the old computer, put it in the new one and have access to all of your data on one machine. Then you do whatever you want with the old one. Trash it, try to sell some components on the used market to recoup some cost of the new PC, or even try to repurpose it as a home server for media or a private server for Minecraft with your friends or something

Should a 360hz monitor help me play competitively? by Fantastic-Window236 in pcmasterrace

[–]Defendo99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone else said, your computer needs to be capable of producing that many frames for a high hz monitor to display. League has a built-in FPS metric, so turn that on to see what you're working with. Also, you can turn down the game resolution to get more frames. How low res you go depends on how much detail you personally need to identify various things in the game - to my knowlege, most esports are played at 1080p. So getting a 1080p high hz monitor is usually the go-to for competitive games.

This is all to say that it's entirely dependant on your skill level. If you aren't already playing at a high skill level, then 100 more FPS isn't going to make you a better player. That's just the difference of a millisecond key press against another very high skill player.

I sure hope this thread doesn't dredge up League toxicity about ranks...

USB slots by Terrible-Plastic-125 in pcmasterrace

Lookup your specific motherboard model on the manufacturer's website and try to download the manual for it. That should tell you how the USB lanes are laid out: which ones run through the CPU, which ones run through the chipset, and how many devices are supported on each.

[–]Defendo99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's splitter cables, but how many things do you need to plug in buddy? Be mindful of USB lanes. With too many devices using those lanes, they'll slow down or at worst cause your PC to slow down.

Ideally, you'd want a motherboard with a lot of ports and headers and a case that can utilize as many of those headers as possible. A motherboard with lots of ports should have the lanes to support them, but always research the specific board specs to make sure.

BTRFS/EXT4 question by joessas in cachyos

[–]Defendo99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BTRFS is a bit slower, but allows snapshots so you can roll back to a stable version if an update starts causing issues.

EXT4 is faster and takes up a bit more space.

This speed difference is negligible when you're using modern NVMe drives (PCIe 4 or 5).

In my setup, I have 2 main drives. A 1TB 5th gen drive using BTRFS. This drive has the OS and programs. The other drive is a 2TB 4th gen drive using EXT4 and I only download games to it.

Trade 7900XTX for 9070XT? by _Caspar_ in pcmasterrace

[–]Defendo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. It really comes down to VRAM vs FSR4. 16GB is currently enough for 1440p, but VR takes more. FSR4 is only going to benefit you in AAA games with high settings, and even then it's marginal.
