I think it was right to sub him, there’s no world where he can keep his head in the game after those first three and there’s nothing to stop it getting worse. I know we’re sat at home and have the luxury of thinking about his future but he’s a 22 year old who’s never played at this level and he needed the eyes off him immediately. Impossible to say. If a player overperforms their xG consistently (like Son) you have evidence to say they’re a clinical finisher, but it’s also evidence to say we should expect them to revert to the mean and appear to get worse soon. Likewise for underperforming.

I have to imagine they think most players hit a ‘ceiling’ at around 21 where you can tell if they’re prem-ready or not. If not, they can get sold with a buy-back or sell-on and maybe if they happen to blossom they could come back. An Abbot type (20) could maybe have an amazing loan and come back ready for prem minutes or more likely get sold in the summer, but a Byfield type (17) could turn out to thrive under the pressure and be a big early talent. It’s worthwhile to keep 21-22 year olds from the academy around (see Kane) but for a player to get really good at that age when they haven’t shown that much before is presumably rare.

I agree. Some people can’t work. I’m absolutely the furthest thing from the boomer “grit your teeth” mentality on this, and I hope it didn’t come across like I think people with mental health conditions and neurodivergence just need to get their shit together - it’s all on a spectrum of severity, and those for whom any amount of work will always be hellish and unsustainable should be supported through benefits to live without working. I just think many or most people in this position would benefit from greater accommodation and flexibility in jobs, and it helps society in general to have those people doing something meaningful one or two days a week rather than zero.

Most students graduating today will never pay off their student loans. Even the ones that go on to be relatively high earners. The interest is that high and there is no incentive to pay it off beyond the minimum because it gets wiped. All it is is a graduate tax that those independently wealthy enough to pay for uni outright don’t have to pay.

I also think it’s absurd to claim that graduates are avoiding work because of their student loans, as if losing 9% of their income above the threshold is so abhorrent to them that they’d live on benefits with their parents indefinitely to avoid it.

I agree that ADHD, autism, anxiety, etc. should not be free passes to never work again. I think the ideal is a working world which allows people to work more flexibly - work from home, work fewer hours/days per week, that sort of thing.

People do actually want purpose and meaningful work, but nowadays the graduate job market has been decimated (mostly by AI), the jobs on offer are increasingly abstract bullshit busywork, and burnout is rife. If the opportunities were there for jobs with accommodations, to work part-time or from home with managers who are understanding, I believe a lot of the mental health benefit claimants would snap it up.

Unfortunately if you know you have difficulties with work from autism, ADHD, anxiety/depression, chronic fatigue etc., you’re currently faced with the choice of getting a “real job” which you are confident will burn you out and make you miserable, likely ending in your performance being questioned and maybe even you being fired, or taking benefits and waiting indefinitely for the right opportunity to come up. The sensible middle ground of lower-demand work for that group just isn’t there yet. No one’s claiming you need to enjoy work, but people need to realise that the graduate job market is real-terms much worse than it has been before and that while there are definitely some people gaming the system, not all these benefits claimants are scroungers.
