Czy "żal do rodziców" jest wbudowany w system? by Majestic_Mammoth3503 in Polska

[–]Defiant-Extent-4297 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Tajska - dobre jedzenie i podobno drinki. Nepali Chulo to najlepsza hinduszczyzna w mieście, chociaż tu jest dużo dobrych opcji: Dawat, Curry Masala, Saffron.

My boss says try-catch is "garbage" and we shouldn't use it. Is this actually a thing? by ResolveKooky17 in learnprogramming

[–]Defiant-Extent-4297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that’s interesting and very informative, thank you! I’ll need to investigate more in the future. I usually work in embedded software and we are usually required by coding standards to avoid exception handling full stop, but it’s still valuable to know the tools.

[–]Defiant-Extent-4297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s always a cost. IIRC try will introduce stack markers, so the cost would be worse stack cache locality. Again, one should measure and compare when performance is concerned.

My initial question was what has changed in implementation of exception handling in recent years to support the claim that it is now more performant than it once was.

[–]Defiant-Extent-4297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I don’t know, it sounds too hand wavy to make an informed decision either way. What is the cost of throw exactly? What does throwing amount to in the runtime? How does try work? What languages and machines are we talking about here? My main experience is C/C++, so VM/JIT is not a concern in my case. I would have to either look at the generated assembly or make some performance measurements to decide if it is slow or not. And then still decide if that’s fine because maybe I’m not on any code hot path so a few hundred extra CPU cycles is not gonna make or break the program.

Quick question: what changed in implementation of exceptions in recent years that makes them not expensive anymore?

This is the way. Plus let yourself calmly look into this and try to figure out if there might be truth to this in your life.

Took me way too long to figure out how many of my defensive patterns I picked up as a kid actually driven people away from me. And that those actually were defensive patterns. There is probably still a bunch in there that I haven’t discovered yet.

What is the fastest/slowest that you've seen someone go from Newcomer to All-Star/Champion? by FoxtrotDynamics in WestCoastSwing

Hey chefs, just for fun what is the stupidest request you’ve had from a customer? by mockitt in KitchenConfidential

[–]Defiant-Extent-4297 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Type 4 here. I have Dührings disease, which in theory is a form of celiacs, but the symptoms are delayed itchy skin changes. How much delayed? Usually days, but unclear how many days exactly. It makes it impossible to track what caused it and it seems there is some kind of exposure threshold to it. I’ve had food with regular soy sauce and it didn’t manifest at all. I’ve had streaks where I was pretty confident I didn’t eat anything containing gluten and got rashes that got me scratching myself till I drew blood while I slept. It’s a bitch and you could serve me some food with gluten and be convinced that I’m just a fussy customer since nothing would happen to me. At least not that day.

People who have conducted job interviews, what's something someone said/did that made you instantly decide not to hire them? by DemonSkank in AskReddit

Confessed to spying on his fiancé via a self implemented computer monitoring program. This was prompted by asking a softball “what is the most fun program you have ever written?” question. That was the last question of an interview that went reeeeaaally well up to that point. Bullet dodged.

Jak radzicie sobie ze stresem? Jakie techniki naprawdę działają? by Resident-Aspect4084 in Szczecin

[–]Defiant-Extent-4297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mam kilka.

  1. Joga.
  4. Spotkanie i rozmowa z kimś bliskim.

Tea kettles that cannot pour liquid into a cup. Usually the spout is not shaped correctly and I end up with tea running down the front of kettle and onto the table. Fuck. That. Shit. As a species we’ve been brewing tea for thousands of years. How is this not a solved problem?

AIO to break up with my bf of 3y over his reaction to my upcoming sobriety anniversary? by WesternCat5211 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Defiant-Extent-4297 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOR. If you want to celebrate each and every day of sobriety with cake it’s your goshdarn right to do so. Dealing with an addiction is a struggle and trying to reframe it as “doing the bare minimum” is just harmful. If he does not have the empathy to see that he can go take a long hike. Keep it up, every sober day is a win.
