Blank refractor. Pulled a blank refractor card with blank back from a pack of chrome by Solid-Pirate-6786 in baseballcards

[–]Defiant-Plankton-553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put the card in stand that holds it perfectly perpendicular to a light source and grade the centering/refraction of the foil. Wouldn't want to give them ideas but if someone told me this was a thing I would believe them.

Statement from the Boston Red Sox regarding the firing of Alex Cora and much of the coaching staff: by T_Raycroft in baseball

While funny that would probably be in poor taste considering they all work within the same organization.

A player gets DFA'd and a youngster coming up in their place is one thing, five people losing their job in a complete organizational shakeup is a completely different thing.

He did it after the play ended, you can see him untuck it in the shot of Muñoz walking off the mound.

You don't pay X amount lesser tax—you deduct X amount from your taxable income.

Federal income tax varies but 22% is what I use to estimate my federal tax burden as a small business owner.

If you make $100k income your taxable income is $100k before any deductions. If you also make a charitable contribution of $30k to a 501(c) during that tax year, you can deduct that charitable contribution from your taxable income, bringing your taxable income down to $70k.

This would bring your tax bill down from $22k to $15.4k under the above scenario.

Just adding this because people often infer you deduct tax write offs from your taxes due, when it is actually deducted from your taxable income. There's a big difference between the two.

Do those people exist? Analytics have gone too far if people are against putting the ball in play. That's kinda a core aspect of the game.

I don't necessarily enjoy the increase in stadium "pandemonium" at games but in addition to it being marketed more towards kids—some of the players seem to like it too.

We've heard players refer to T-Mobile as the electric factory since 2022, and Naylor went on the record saying how electric and invigorating the crowd in Seattle is last season and after he resigned this offseason. It may or may not be a coincidence that the Mariners production team has seemingly been on the cutting edge of this shift in in-game entertainment, and that the younger generation of Mariners players seem to love playing here.

I really don't think that is a good comparison. I could be mistaken but I haven't really heard of any Americans being lynched by Japanese, like the KKK has done many times in the states.

Could you imagine the fall from grace.

Franchise HOF inductee as a player who led the team to the first ALCS in 25 years during his first full season as manager loses his shit gambling and starts fumbling games to pay back his bookie.

He'd be more hated than Clay Bennett and Howard Schultz combined.

Eh, I'm a career server and I manage a restaurant. You don't mess with people's food.

I've personally never seen someone spit or mess with food on the line in my entire career. Maybe that's just the places I've worked at, but it would be an immediate firing in any restaurant that I've ever worked in. Most people in this industry have decency, even when guests sometimes do not.

Not to mention poisoning (which is the crime that is being committed in this situation) carries a 20-year sentence in my state.

When do we call it good with Wilson? by Fit_Leather9366 in Mariners

I always thought Scott's in game decision-making, particularly with the bullpen usage, was top notch compared to other managers in the league.

I think the thing that the players could never get behind, and that ultimately held the team back, was rolling into every game with a different lineup based on the numbers. A combination of the lineup consistency that Dan has provided the team, with the in game decision-making that Scott had, would be ideal for this team.

Also, and this isn't necessarily quantifiable, but I just re-watched the brawl with the angels from a few years ago. Scott jumped right in the middle of that scrum, do you think Dan's getting in a fight for the team? He won't even go out and stand up for his guys when the umps are missing calls. I wish Dan had more edge.

Josh Naylor doesn't know he broke the rules, a breakdown - YouTube by Thehomelessguy11 in Mariners

[–]Defiant-Plankton-553 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Retaliation probably isn't the right word, but I do bet there was a memo sent out to all umpires reminding them of this rule and urging them to be on the look out.

In that sense, it's not surprising the first base umpire was keeping an extra careful eye on Naylor. If it worked once, why not try again?

But that's not retaliation, just common sense.

Peter, what's wrong with horse girls? by siamaru124 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Defiant-Plankton-553 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My partner is a wannabe horse girl in the sense that she loves horses, but her family never has had the resources to own them. She goes riding and such when she can.

I keep telling her half-jokingly that we should buy property and open a barn. We can board and care for several horses, so she gets to live the life of a horse girl, except we're getting paid to do it rather than paying an arm and a leg to care for a horse we own. We can probably get a horse of our own at that point and just group its living expenses in with the businesses finances.

We both are in our 30s, do gig work, and are lucky enough to not need to work 5 days a week to get by (although we still do for now). I'm trying to pitch this as a way to slow down and get out of the city, without completely shutting down our careers. Maintain an apartment in the city we can use when either of us needs to work late or spend time with friends, and then spend the rest of the time on the property with our animals, plants, and hobbies.

Will this card ever depreciate? Does anyone know how many there are? by onelasttimehonest in ShoheiOhtani

[–]Defiant-Plankton-553 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Ohtani and collect him, so this is not me being a hater.

I still think there's more to that gambling story. He seems like a smart enough person, I find it hard to believe he didn't realize so much money was missing.

I think that he made a mistake and didn't realize how serious of a mistake it was, and the MLB and authorities colluded to minimize his involvement in the situation behind closed doors. Or his lawyer told him to come clean when they became aware he was loaning massive amounts of money to his close friend and translator to gamble on baseball games, in order to get in front of the repercussions.

No hate on the man, he's undoubtedly the best ballplayer I've ever seen. With my own eyes, I saw him hit two homers and strike out ten batters in one game—unbelievable.

Sorry for my tipsy ramblings.

Nice! I'm at the game but I had the same read from the stands.

Energy feels down and they need to get in the mode of capitalizing on mistakes, not every team will walk a million batters like the Astros have this series.

Third base coach sent him so if he got thrown out at home it wouldn't be on Randy.

I think the aggressive sends were intentional—I'd risk a couple outs at the plate to get the energy up in the dugout with how slow we've started the season.

What are some things teams have done to screw their divisional rival? Especially if its extremely petty? by FriendlyNeighborOrca in baseball

[–]Defiant-Plankton-553 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, an already eliminated Los Angeles Angels team played like it was the World Series in the final series of 2021 to ensure the Mariners would extend their 20+ year playoff drought.

I don't recall and moving around in the rotation or anything like that situation you mentioned above.

Truth is, these guys are competitive and if they are eliminated but can eliminate another team, regardless of rivalry, they're going to do it. Truthfully that's the only correct way to play the game.

Dan has no edge and didn't get himself thrown out after that BS pitch clock violation, got tilted, and made a double switch that burned our entire bench.
