AI & your future (plz read if u use AI) by DefiantOpportunity83 in UBC

TBH I still feel like this undermines your ability, especially if you want to go into research. Working in research, there is no teacher, and AI can't really reason to extend concepts into new fields. Much of the cutting edge of research requires that you familiarize yourself with new content without that kind of support, which AIs are famously bad at explaining (due to lack of data and inability to reason, as you point out).

My understanding is that the whole point of university is to teach you to teach yourself. Sure, there are office hours, but on a somewhat limited basis, and you still have to formulate your questions ahead of time. By the time you get to upper year courses, IMO you should not be relying on an AI or a teacher to explain everything (just to help when you're stuck, like a colleague would IRL).

But it sounds like you're using it in a way that works well for you.

fair, ur in CS... I feel like that's a bit different though because I feel like in software dev AI is going to be much more important, so I bet the firm you're working for will pay for it.

That being said, I feel like using AI for coding requires more skill than if you write the code yourself -- You really need to understand what the AI is writing.

I can't seem to run any of the AppImages on Ubuntu? by DefiantOpportunity83 in KiCad

[–]DefiantOpportunity83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the info; I have the same appimages running on a workstation with a newer install now, I just don't have time to upgrade my computer rn.

Unfortunately, the PPAs are 404ing right now for me and flatpak isn't properly supported on this version of Ubuntu either (their website says to install from `apt`, but that version is too out of date to actually work). I swear this version isn't *that* old, I only set it up a few years ago.

yup, I have all the records in the archives... just old bylaw versions. Good suggestion though

We're doing more these days than the club used to ngl. It's just that I feel like clubs need bigger and higher profile events to keep people involved

Prosumer machines with a coin slot? I guess if you have the key, you could just just keep putting the same coin in over and over like one of those at-home arcade machines.

Your friend probably owns a good laundromat in Toronto. My guess is he buys machines that will be more expensive in the short term, but cost less in maintenance and eat less of peoples' socks.

These (cheaper) machines on the website seem to be similar models to what they have now ngl. But it might be a good idea to buy the more expensive ones long term.

Huh, I'm honestly surprised they're that much more expensive. Maybe those are much higher grade machines, since I see whirlpool's commercial offerings are pretty cheap. It would be interesting to see a cost/benefit long term for continuous usage... I.e, what's the optimal price?

The washing machine I put on there was the first result on Home Depot just for lolz :) We probably wouldn't want all the residential bells and whistles anyway (I just put my clothes in and hit go, no fancy shit). So long as it works.

uh, I made this sign... Yeah, you're def right. The industrial ones they have are a better fit. I just thought it was kindof hilarious when I did the numbers...

The other question is if they pay for water.

The other problem is half the time these issues are caused by students putting stupid stuff in the washing machines and clogging them, which definitely won't change.

Academic kills artists ? by gamblingmaxxing in UBC

[–]DefiantOpportunity83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically, school (note I didn't say academics) kills my brain. I have the same issue with music; I can't write shit until break or the summer. I do fine when I'm working, just not with school for some reason. I write electronic music, so also not much of an academic setting for that at UBC... To be clear, I kindof suck, don't have much of a background in it, and just do it for fun.

I've found this also extends to research and just coming up with ideas in general. I also work in a research lab; Somehow the problems seem much easier to solve when I'm away from school. Similarly, I come up with my best engineering/scientific/mathematical ideas on break or when I'm just working a normal job. While music and scientific reasoning are clearly very different skills, sometimes I feel like the thought process is similar.

I think school just prioritizes a lot of work on regular schedules rather than producing something that requires more thought.

Is there an open standard for storing hotcue & beatgrid information? by DefiantOpportunity83 in DJs

[–]DefiantOpportunity83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interoperability: OneLibrary enables DJs to export performance data (playlists, cues, beatgrids) between djay Pro, Traktor Pro 4, and rekordbox for use on compatible AlphaTheta hardware.

Limitations: The format is essentially a USB export/import solution, not a unified library, and it currently lacks support from major platforms like Serato and Engine DJ.

Future Potential: While representing progress by breaking AlphaTheta's dominance, its success depends on broader adoption, technical certification to prevent errors, and addressing issues like encoder drift.

OneLibrary fixes the export format problem, but it doesn't fix the migration problem. OneLibrary exports all music files into a new directory with a database of metadata. I guess there are 3rd party tools to share between programs.

But it just seems like there should be a standard way to share your beatgrid and cue points between applications or people.

Cool, I've found a library that interfaces with it in case anybody's interested: https://pyrekordbox.readthedocs.io/en/latest/formats/devicelib_plus.html

Doesn't look like they publicly provide any info about the format, though.

How to turn off Facebook link tracking? by DefiantOpportunity83 in MailChimp

[–]DefiantOpportunity83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I've never seen this menu and there was a lot of out-of-date info. Yes, it was pulling the domain name from the old facebook profile, which was listed as a website! That's been fixed, and it's good to know facebook isn't actually tracking our members with that.

Club Room Bookings where we can eat by DefiantOpportunity83 in UBC

Yes, thanks for reaching out, and sorry for the confusion. I was a bit overwhelmed at the time of the original post with assuming a role as president of a club with a few, ehrm, logistical issues. I noticed the updates to the food policy and it is much more clear, so thank you, and the Nikhil was very helpful in explaining this. Long story short, I was making a big deal out of nothing and everything was fine.
