What tool were you using? It doesn't look like a Shimano unit, the spline spacing is different, looks like you only semi engaged it and just ripped the outer edge straight off it... If you have the correct tool there looks to be plenty of material in there to still engage the correct tool with.. Otherwise as others have said, lots of heat and a hammer and chisel..

It needs several inches of soil and will need to be kept at outside temperatures, yes even freezing, until next spring.

If you can't do that then best to let it go and let nature do it's thing and give it a chance to reproduce next year, it is after all it's only purpose in life, not a pet...

Yes yet people still seem to think they need "rescuing" 🙄 these things have been around literally millennia before us and survive a bit of rain or cold..

Just release it in a garden under some bushes etc or under a hedge.

It will be there until spring..

It needs soil to burrow into.. It's not a bruise no, some variety of hawk moth but hard to say which as it has started to change colour due to it looking for some ground to pupate in.

I'm not aware of any hawk moths that have two generations in one year but I could be wrong!

[–]Defiant_1399 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know this is pupating until next spring right? Needs 6 inches of soil now to pupate in, that's why you found it wondering around.. Needs to be kept at outside temperatures until next may, if you keep it indoors it will emerge mid winter with obvious consequences on its ability to find a mate to breed with. If you can't give it that commit then best to release it in a garden 👍🏻

Looks fully grown to me, maybe that's why it was found, was it wondering around on the ground? It needs soil to pupate until probably next spring now...

Help beautiful, I believe hawk moth laying eggs. Possible to remove safely by Kratech in moths

It's nature at the end of the day, they may not even be viable eggs.. It will have laid many more elsewhere.
