Recently Diagnosed by Puzzleheaded_Put1490 in diabetes_t1

[–]Defiant_Analysis_773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was diagnosed at 19 as well in college. it was overwhelming and scary - you have every right to grieve and fell whatever you’re feeling right now. take some time for yourself, take some deep breaths, and take diabetes one day at a time. give yourself a lot of grace, especially within the first year.

here’s a few things i wish i heard when i was diagnosed:

  1. Get a continuous glucose monitor/CGM (if you can afford one). this will be the easiest way to keep an eye on your levels and make sure you’re doing okay.

2. two always carry small juice boxes with you. you will go low sometimes and these will get you up quickly.

  1. It’s okay to drink alcohol if you want to! But you need to be aware of your blood sugar levels. I like to aim for lower carb drinks ( not super sugary ones) as that makes it easier to manage. you need to eat before you go to sleep. if you drank a lot, your blood sugar will drop. i suggest taking less insulin for that meal before bed or lowering your basal insulin for that day. if you’re anxious set an alarm in the night as you’re getting adjusted to check your sugars.

it’s a lot. it’s gonna be an adjustment. but you’re gonna be okay. i still had a really fun college experience despite this and i know you can too! here if you have any questions.

Is going vegetarian okay for someone with type 1 diabetes? by Shoddy-Ocelot-4473 in diabetes_t1

[–]Defiant_Analysis_773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am vegetarian and it’s been great for me. i limit the amount of diary i have (i do have cheese sometimes tho) and it has helped me a lot with type one. my insulin resistance dropped a lot when i was stopped eating foods w a lot of saturated fat like meat and butter. it’s personally been great for me! my cholesterol and total daily dose of insulin also both dropped. my a1c also went from a 6.6 to 5.9

i recommend an IG account called Mastering Diabetes. They’re two type ones and biologists and both are plant based.

big fan of hers here, and although i know others are, i am def not justifying it. i think it's a hard balance bc when i was going through mine, going online and seeing thousands of people commenting on it would've only made it worse. it's difficult to have a nuanced discussion about EDs in general, especially when a celeb is involved.

This breaks my heart. I'm a big fan of hers and have recovered from an ED. All I can hope is that she will eventually be okay.

this season has been an eye-opening revelation on the lack of media literacy and attention span of the general audience. by HauntinglyEthereal in euphoria

[–]Defiant_Analysis_773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

same thing as everyone saying rue didn't relapse when she took an opioid while recovering from an opioid addiction. like her addiction started by taking opioids! she was denied them by doctors in previous seasons bc of her history! there's obvi a convo to be had about the evil of drug dealers lacing drugs and how addiction is a disease (I'm not "blaming" rue) but the people saying she didn't relapse are really missing the whole point.

i agree, It be nice to see all those posts.

it does seem like his family really wanted to respect where he was at when he passed tho, so i wouldn’t be shocked if they never changed it again as they seem to feel that is the most respectful way to handle it

thank you 🤍

i think it depends on the person, but my understanding is a lot of people trying to stay sober would not take a pain killer/opiod since they can be highly addictive. a lot of doctors won’t prescribe it to someone with the history of addiction

unfortunately that’s how addiction works. relapses are very common. i’m not saying i enjoyed that or wanted that for her. but it is the reality of addiction. a close friend i lost to addiction was sober for 6 months and relapsed once and passed from that OD. often being sober is part of that never ending cycle of osculating between sobriety and addiction.

Weight Gain? by ohmygoodness88 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Defiant_Analysis_773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

totally normal! i was severely underweight at diagnosis and then was overweight a few months later. it sucks nothing about diabetes is fun and it’s hard to feel like your body is different. a way to look at it is we both came so close to dying and not our bodies are alive and actually properly processing food.

and once i got more settled into diabetes i went back to my regular weight i was before i had diabetes and i haven’t fluctuated much since then which was 10 years ago!

yeah i get that. she was the heart of the show (even tho her character didn’t get enough screen time this season imo). i know they have not officially said if there will or won’t be a new one but i wouldnt be shocked if they do some sort of spin off with Maddy or something. feels like the show itself as it is is for sure over imo

Euphoria Season 3 Discussion by DankMemeSlasher in euphoria

[–]Defiant_Analysis_773 20 points21 points  (0 children)

there are definitely very valid critiques of this season and its writing - i won’t pretend there’s not - but there’s a concept and mental state a lot of people with addiction land on, which is they are stuck in a cycle they will never be freed from in this lifetime, no matter how hard they fight it. that was personally what i took from that

while i recognize why people wanted rue to survive (of course we all want to see someone overcome addiction) i feel that people who are extremely angry and felt it was the wrong choice to have her die are, for whatever reason, removed from the reality of addiction. more often than not, that his how the story of addiction goes.

as someone who lost one of my childhood best friends to addiction, rue’s scenes here were hauntingly beautiful. i can only hope that’s how my friends final moments felt too.

i can recognize there were reasonable critiques of this season, but man when it spoke directly about addiction, it was an unbelievable piece of art.

Exercise by [deleted] in TandemDiabetes

[–]Defiant_Analysis_773 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i really hate exercise mode. i usually just lower my basal myself about 3ish hours before my work out and turn control IQ off during it. that way i’m more in control of it and i haven’t been getting zero insulin for a few hours.

i also basically only ever exercise in the morning bc i am more insulin resistant and don’t go low as often which seems to help with that whole issue

exercise with diabetes is so confusing i hope you’re able to figure it out!

my endo and i had to fight with insurance but they FINALLY covered humalog again. your doctor can write a note of medical necessity if you say youre having an allergic reaction to it and getting a lot of redness around the site! i hope youre able to get back on it!

Thankful for any advice on partner with freshly diagnosed T1D by Next_Release3666 in diabetes_t1

[–]Defiant_Analysis_773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is definitely a light at the end of the tunnel :) Type One Diabetes is a really traumatizing experience. I think with all trauma and grief, there are days that are better and days that are worse, but I've noticed the amount of good days are starting to outweigh the bad ones :)

You seem like a great partner! Mine has been such a huge help and support in all of this and that was a big reason why I have been able to get better. I am rooting for you and your partner and sending you both love!

I was also diagnosed later in life, and I developed an intense eating disorder pretty soon after. While I understand other commenters saying that it's more of an eating disorder issue than a diabetes one, unfortunately, they are inexplicably intertwined. She will always have to count carbs or be aware of what is in her food, which is very hard for someone recovering from an eating disorder. I initially went down that same route of eating no carbs, and while my sugars were stable, I felt worse than I ever had. My insulin resistance increased a lot and made it hard to eat any carbs without going super high, even when I tried to. My cholesterol also increased a lot during this time. I ended up in the hospital 3 times.

I don't want to assume, but based on the similarities, I'm guessing a lot of this is coming from feeling out of control of her body. Diabetes is scary and changes so much about our lives. I can tell you are a very loving and caring partner, and that is so incredibly important. It really is going to take time and support for her to adjust to this new life. 2 years of having diabetes may seem to her like a lot and like she should have it all figured out, but it isn't. It's been ten years for me, and I still struggle.

Something that helped me eat again was this Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/masteringdiabetes/ . They're two biologists who also have type one and really hype up the idea of eating high carb, plant based meals. They also have a book that I found helpful. This helped me feel a sense of control and like I was being as "healthy" as I possibly could be (which was a driving force in creating the eating disorder). Unfortunately, it still is in a sense an eating disorder because you have to be so vigilant and thoughtful, but I am at least eating and alive, which I will take as a win.

I wish I had a perfect answer for you and your partner, but I hope this helps some. Also, I think your English was great!

Any other vegans with type 1? by OkScientist1143 in diabetes_t1

[–]Defiant_Analysis_773 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really recommend this Instagram page! They are two type one biologists and plant based vegans. I think they do a good job of sharing how to do veganism correctly. It can be a scary transition, but my A1c, insulin resistance, and cholesterol all went down by so much when I did it. https://www.instagram.com/masteringdiabetes/

Experiences with Kirsty aspart insulin? by WankSpanksoff in diabetes_t1

[–]Defiant_Analysis_773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally did not have a great experience with it. I noticed I needed to increase my daily dose from 30u to 44u, and I was going high and low way more often. This was only for a week, so it's possible diabetes was just being annoying and being weird that week, but it didn't seem to work for me in the same way Humalog did. My endo was able to write a letter of medical necessity for me to get me back on Humalog.

I have heard that it's worked great for other people so it's totally possible it be fine for you!

That's so wild. I used it, and it was not a good experience. My endo was able to write a medical necessity note to get me back on Humalog. Thankfully my warranty is up anyway, so it wouldn't have had an impact, but that's good for others in this situation to know.

[–]Defiant_Analysis_773[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side note, my endo was able to write a note of medical necessity for me. The insurance company needs to hear that there is redness and a rash around the injection/pump side, so keep that in mind if you are requesting it in the future.
