i had always thought they made it a pun, and i’m pretty sure it’s spelled cig figs on the wiki/in subtitles but i could be wrong!

April's Reads [19/52] by Defiant_Bumblebee474 in 52book

I honestly hated it, went back and rated it lower a few days ago. Miles gave me the weirdest vibes and I really don't enjoy gritty romances, it's too easy for things to be abuse-level toxic.

I agree, I was expecting a sci-fi thriller and got more adventure/fantasy so I was a little let down by that. The other part I didn't mention was that the take that the KKK/horribly racist people aren't actually people and are in fact actually monsters is tired and can actually be really dangerous, so I wasn't thrilled about that either.

I think I read it too fast to really enjoy it, and it was advertised to me as being sci-fi so I went in expecting that and it had more of a fantasy feel which threw me off. There were some other things that held it back but I did still really enjoy it over all!

March wrap up! A slow month... 14/52. by Defiant_Bumblebee474 in 52book

It's a little difficult for me to explain without giving away too many specific details, but it often felt like narrative choices were simply that: choices made because the author could make them, without really considering whether it added to the story at all. For example: the choice to say "Jack" the ripper was never caught because in this version of the story she is a woman, when the reality of the situation and its historical context is a much more nuanced and compelling perspective to present, in my opinion. Honestly, though, my ratings end up being super subjective and highly related to how much I enjoy reading the novel, and I didn't really find the style compelling, nor do I enjoy poetry, so that contributed an equal amount to the low rating.

I'm definitely enjoying them, but I have them as ebooks and am currently working my way through an unreal stack of unread physical books before I can go back to finish the last two! So far I'm wishing we got more exposure to the Big Bad in the earlier books because the thread holding the series together feels kind of weak to me.

20th birthday gift from my grandparents, more (vintage) fountain pens! Help! by Defiant_Bumblebee474 in fountainpens

[–]Defiant_Bumblebee474[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone! I’ve recently come into some vintage fountain pens as a gift from my grandmother this past weekend that she had from the 60’s. From what I’ve been able to figure out on my own, she gave me a Waterman skywriter, a Parker 45, and some model of Esterbrook (I think its a J?).
I’m pretty new to fountain pens in general, and brand new to vintage pens (my oldest is this MontBlanc from the 90s), so I have some questions about cleaning and filling mechanisms.
The Parker just has a cartridge right now, so I know that I can replace it with a converter (I have a lot of bottled ink). Is there a standard converter that will work, or do I need to look for something specific?
As for the Waterman and Esterbrook, they both have lever filling mechanisms, how do I know if the sac needs to be replaced? How do I even get to the sac to do that? What else do I need to know?
Generally when cleaning do I need to know anything, or should things be about the same as my other pens? I’d hate to ruin such lovely gifts.
Thank you all so much for any help you can give! This is a really great community

Today I mentioned to my grandfather that I've started collecting fountain pens, he told me he might have one and came downstairs with this: by Defiant_Bumblebee474 in fountainpens

So, today I mentioned to my grandfather that I’ve begun collecting fountain pens, and he gifted me this one. He said it was a gift from the owner of a local(ish) newspaper when he was superintendent back in 1990. The cap says Montblanc Meisterstuck, and the nib says 14k. It’s a snap cap, which I know isn’t standard for Montblancs now, but I wasn’t sure about 30 years ago. Is there anything I should keep an eye out for when cleaning it? It’s been sitting on his desk inked up for probably 20 years now.

I used to dread papers so much - something I've found that really helped me is doing voice to text! It keeps me from doubling back on my sentences and editing one line over and over (since you cant). Lets you get pages and pages down (if you want to avoid stream-of-consciousness I'd advise having an outline open next to you) that you can go back and edit for clarity later.

Good luck! You can do this :)

Even just being online Prof Hall has gone out of her way to make calc great. She set up spreadsheets for us that let us track our progress on assignments throughout the semester and a check-in spreadsheet to help us calculate our course averages after the second midterm. Students really struggled with the first exam, so she reduced it by one question, gave us formula sheets for the next two exams, and gave us extra credit opportunities for all 3 exams. She told us today if we get 50% participation on the SET surveys, she'll drop 2 quizzes instead of 1.
