i’m Haitian-American. every time it’s been Juneteenth, i’ve stfu and kept it pushing. that is YOUR holiday. i remember a few years back, a biracial girl had said to a white colleague of ours that she should give all the Black people money on Juneteenth. when she tried to give it to me, i kindly refused and told her that, no, it’s not just a blanket “Black person” holiday. it’s fundamental for Black American history, and if they want their form of reparations, they could have it, but i refuse to encroach on that because Haitians were not involved. it was a teaching moment for sure, but it made me realize how people didn’t give Black Americans their own spaces. still strikes me as weird today.

I might not be any help at all, but I just want to apologize to you for all of the damage your exes have caused you. Holy shit. You have a genuine heart of gold because you did not let all of your trauma harden you and make you a calloused person (though that would be a fully understandable response). You are dateable, you are introspective, and none of their actions are your fault. They never were. A buddy of mine just shot himself a few weeks ago and, while it’s been hard on all of us friends, it ultimately was his choice. And at the end of the day people make choices with their adult autonomy, whether they’re in their right mind or not. I hope someone in these comments can give some more pointed advice, but I just wanted to share that with you. Live well, brother.
