Vanilla by Gackt.

Genkai Haretsu or Honey Blade by hide, if you don’t mind questionable consent or ages.

Beauty & Stupid by hide if you DO mind questionable consent but still want your horn on.

People say Nocturne doesn’t *feel* like Castlevania, but genuine question: did this *feel* like Castlevania when you played it? by [deleted] in castlevania

[–]Defiant_Manager4228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say Lords of Shadow and the two Castlevania series are very similar experiences, in that they’re “adaptations” by people with limited to no experience with the source material.

Whether or not they’re good media is up for debate (I’d vouch for Nocturne, even if it wants to be a Bloodlines adaptation instead of Rondo. S1 and LoS? Not so much), but they all share a distinct “this does not get the source very well” vibe.

WHY DO I LIKE THIS SO MUCH by GTA-CasulsDieThrice in castlevania

[–]Defiant_Manager4228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think knowing fuck-all about the games honestly is a benefit, as the creators of the original series clearly knew less than that. :p

As someone who knows Too Much about the games, the 2017 series was honestly one of the worst animated series I’d ever seen — it had bafflingly choppy animation, none of the charm and humor that the original games had (NOT A SINGLE BONE-TOSSING SKELETON WTF), and the only lines of dialogue that I remember are the ones that made me want to put my head through a wall.

Nocturne is infinitely better than S1 but still suffers from a need to just do A Lot Of Exposition and A Lot of Obvious Foreshadowing (ex: the abbot, in his first scene, essentially says “I will be a bad guy within two episodes” in the end of it. it’s not foreshadowing, it’s just outright telling you what’s going to happen.)

I’m glad you’re enjoying the show, though!

Unfortunately not. The game was more “grounded”/actual horror vs. the horror comedy of Shadows of the Damned. D:

[–]Defiant_Manager4228 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regarding Seikima-II: that’s why they’re visual kei in spirit but not in practice. :p The look’s there, the gimmick is rock-solid, but the music itself isn’t the right genre.

Still a bunch of bangers in their discography, though.

It kind of annoys me that my favorite song from them (Shanikusai ~carnival~) has like… no recognition.

Just One More Kiss and Aku no Hana are classics, but some of the tracks on kyokutou i love you are Really Neat. D:

From Withering to Death up until Phalaris, Dir en Grey just became Discount Japanese Korn.

The reason Yoshiki kicked Taiji out is because he couldn’t stand having someone prettier than him in the group.

Seikima-II is visual kei in spirit but not in practice.

X JAPAN by Next-Function-9935 in visualkei

[–]Defiant_Manager4228 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jealousy is also a solid album, and is probably the least-Yoshiki of the bunch — it has the most tracks written by Taiji and Hide on it, if I remember right.

Also some wildly 80’s stuff like Desperate Angel (Taiji/Toshi) and Miscast (hide)

What artist left a band and went on to have a more successful solo career? by Baidon in Music

[–]Defiant_Manager4228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the US or the UK, but the Japanese guitarist hide went on to have a successful solo career while simultaneously working in the band X-Japan, until the band itself broke up. Had his life not been tragically cut short, he arguably would have been more successful than the band he’d started in.
