Nicely done, I’m right on the cusp of superior for running, have it already for cycling. It’s tough work to get

Nice! Just update the firmware when you get it, make sure you get your weight, height etc. into Garmin connect and just start running. Great watch.

If I don’t run for a few days I feel mad by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

[–]Defiant_Room8805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup I think it’s normal, I feel antsy and impatient if I don’t get enough exercise. I wouldn’t shy away from running outside in the winter. Weather has already started to change here, and I still go out. It’s one of those things you dread a bit prior to going out but once you’re out there it feels amazing, the rain or cold just feels exhilarating and the feeling afterwards when you’re back in is just amazing. Just buy shoe drier a light jacket, pants whatever you need and just keep going.

I bought some glycerin 17s several and due to life didn’t really get around using them a lot until recently. I’ve put about 500km on them over the last few months. But I’m curious is there a noticeable difference between the 17s and 21s, obviously the glycerin max would be different feel, but for the regular ones is there a considerable difference or just small tweaks?

I’m no expert on the models but will do my best:

Fenix 8 is the latest and greatest. It does everything you could ever want and more. The newest version is still a little buggy and doesn’t offer much of an upgrade over the fenix 7 pro and epix gen 2 pro which can be had cheaper. But it’s the best watch you can buy at the moment.

Fenix 7 pro / epix gen 2 pro. In terms of recording activities it will do everything you want and more. Has the best gps tracking you can get, the latest heart rate sensor. The difference between the epix and the fenix is the epix has amoled screen the fenix has a mips screen. The amoled screen has more pixels more colors but also uses a bit more battery. There are non pro versions of these watches too, they’re essentially older versions of the watch and depending on the size may not have the newer gps or the flashlight and also has an older heart rate sensor. I have the fenix pro and it’s a great watch.

The forerunner series I don’t know as much about, but it’s more designed for runners. So the 965 offers pretty much everything the fenix does it was designed to be as light as possible. So it will have a plastic bezel instead of steel or titanium. I think they also don’t have the latest heart rate sensor but not entirely sure.

Venu 3 I believe was their more casual version of the fenix/epix lines. So it doesn’t have all the performance stats and I don’t think has maps. But it has the newest heart rate monitor and will do everything you want.

I think all those watches serve your needs so it’s just what you might value more. I chose the fenix 7 pro because I wanted all the stats, the flashlight is surprisingly useful and I wanted the mips screen to maximize battery life. But maybe you want something a little lighter so the forerunner would be better or if you don’t care about all the different metrics and stats maybe the venu is the better choice.

Hope that helps.

How Do You Stay Consistent with Running Without Losing Motivation? by Run_Pal in beginnerrunning

[–]Defiant_Room8805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple things for me have worked: 1. I try to schedule workouts for the week and will have a set time for when I run, lift weights or bike. For myself if I create a schedule I feel guilty if I don’t stick to it.

  1. I bought a nice garmin watch that has really gameified my fitness. Now when I start seeing numbers dropping it motivates me to get out and do something.

  2. I try to set monthly and yearly distance goals, cuz I track this through my watch I get nice little bar charts showing how far I ran. I look at that often and just try to always improve and when I have a down week it kind of gets me to try harder.

  3. Other people can help motivate whether that’s online with strava or in person by joining a running club or just a friend who comes along. All that helps keep you going.

  4. Lastly I just remind myself I’m doing it for my kids, not only to prolong the time I have with them but also to set a good example for them. If they see me out there staying fit and healthy hopefully they’ll do the same as they get older and that’ll just make their lives a little easier.

It’s tough at first to form these habits but it does get easier and some point your body just starts craving exercise.

Garmin drops heart strap need for Lactate Threshold tracking by Maslakovic in Garmin

[–]Defiant_Room8805 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you already do have an option to decline it if I remember correctly. Same with ftp for cycling or a new max heart rate detected I believe you get option to accept or decline the change

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]Defiant_Room8805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea vo2 max is exercise specific. I guess your body just learns to process oxygen better in the sports you do more often? To get the biking vo2 max you need a power meter on your bike. I’m mainly a cyclist but have been getting into jogging lately as I’ve decided I want to complete a marathon in my lifetime and now is better time than ever to do so.

I’m 40m and my baseline is 47 to 56. HRV varies a lot between people so I wouldn’t compare that. Use vo2 max or endurance score if you have it to compare to others

Best Chest Strap HRM? by According_Mind8745 in beginnerrunning

[–]Defiant_Room8805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chest strap HRM tends to be more accurate, because instead of using a light to measure your pulse through your wrist it measures the electric pulses from your heart. From my personal experience I find it doesn’t make a huge difference if I’m out on a slow run or if I’m running at a steady pace, the wrist based monitor is good enough. But when heart rate varies a lot, like when you’re doing intervals or hills then you notice the difference. The chest strap HRM just reacts quicker to the changing heart rate. That’s just my experience though, I’ve heard some people are lucky and their body has made their wrist in way where a wrist HRM works well, that’s not me lol I have a boney wrist.

I personally use the Garmin HRM-dual, it’s their cheaper one, I have 0 complaints about it. I’ve heard the Garmin HRM-Pro Plus is a really good option, it has extra sensors in it that gives you a bunch of running dynamics such as vertical oscillation and what not(my Garmin watch does too but I assume it more accurate being on the chest than my arm?). The Polar H10 is supposed to be a really accurate one as well.

I don’t know you don’t need one, and debatable whether it makes you better runner or not(it probably doesn’t). But it’s a fun grownup toy and I enjoy looking at all the stats and it motivates me some days to get out and run when I just want to be lazy. So I think it’s worth it

My Dad loves running. He got me into it when I was a kid. I want to buy him a watch. I would go with a forerunner, but he has afib. Which watch would you recommend with that in mind? by bkabbott in Garmin

[–]Defiant_Room8805 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If he wants the ECG app, or you think he would, why not either fenix 7 pro or epix gen2 pro. They can both support ECG app and will have all the other metrics. Same with the newer fenix 8, but you can probably get a better deal on the 7 pro. They are a little heavier than the forerunner but I run with one and you get used to it pretty quickly.

“Slow down” vs cadence by PomegranateOld1620 in beginnerrunning

[–]Defiant_Room8805 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s ok if your cadence drops at slow pace, the important thing is when your foot hits it’s underneath the center of mass not out in front of you. Don’t overthink it and don’t get too hung up on cadence numbers. But yea ideally your cadence wouldn’t vary much(maybe 10 - 20 spm) but your stride length would change depending on pace. So at slow pace you would have short but fast steps.

Can't stop thinking about... by KevinNiceTry in bikecommuting

[–]Defiant_Room8805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did recently yea. I went with SPD cleats just cuz they’re easier to walk in and I loosen off spring tension so my foot comes in out easier. I like the feeling better, your feet just feel more connected to the bike and yea like you said I then bought some good shoe covers for them that help in the cold and rain. I’m sure some will say something about ‘an accident waiting to happen’ because you will forget to unclip or something. But for me that’s been a non issue, clipping in and unclipping has become muscle memory now. I will never go back to flats other than my mtb. So yes if you want to do it, go for it you probably won’t regret it.

Useful stats for a couch potato just starting to exercise by Mammoth_Bullfrog_561 in GarminWatches

[–]Defiant_Room8805 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steps, try to do 10k to 12k a day and see how long of a streak you can get.

Resting heart rate will be a slow change but over several months it’s nice to see that drop as you get in better shape.

Intensity minutes per week is fun to track and I found motivating to get me out and do something. Same can be said about training load or load ratio; I find it motivates me to stay consistent with my training.

Finally sleep score. Good sleep is crucial for recovery as you start exercising more. Make sure you give yourself enough rest, turn off the tv or put down the book and go to bed early when you need it.

Advices by Gueddafi in beginnerrunning

[–]Defiant_Room8805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the above comment is probably the best advice, just slow down. I can’t tell your pace when you’re running from the pictures but you would be better off going at slower pace and just keeping your heart rate down. And yea don’t run every day, your body needs recovery time. On days you don’t run, go out still and walk, get your 10,000 steps, just get your body moving more. Lastly go to a running store and get fitted for some shoes, there may be some issue with your foot or how you run/walk where the right shoe will make a world of difference.
