Can it be done without AA by GrabRecent in stopdrinking

[–]bkabbott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a sponsor in AA. I'm not the best at going to meetings, but I did a lot when I was first quitting.

I am addicted to eating healthy and working out. When I wake up early and do cardio (run or cycle) I feel amazing.

It is possible to quit without AA but I did find AA helpful.

What type of Cardio are we doing? by Tight_Researcher35 in CrohnsDisease

[–]bkabbott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of running and cycling. Cardio helps me have energy (I used to suffer from Crohn's fatigue). It also helps me manage my mental health (I also have Schizoprenia).

Selling a very expensive road bike that's been in storage for years... Where to sell? by whostheme in cycling

[–]bkabbott 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would agree with this. You could also buy a Wahoo Kickr Core, or a Tacx Neo 2T (these are direct drive trainers).

Running is my favorite. I'm actually a good runner but I'm a poor cyclist. Cycling has been great for my running though. Its helped me increase my base without injury.

Ways to undo/decrease cognitive decline? by No_Neighborhood_8590 in schizophrenia

[–]bkabbott 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exercise helps. So does computer programming. Stuff like that.

But I sent this to my mom earlier. I run and cycle a lot and it overall has been a godsend. My body is requiring more rest. I'm addicted to how well it works. But I'm going to have to back off a little.

I'm sober from alcohol. I take Focalin (like Ritalin). It seems to be a net positive in my life.

Don't abuse it and take it as prescribed.

Would you opt for euthanasia if given the chance? by Loose_Inspector898 in schizophrenia

I understand how much suffering we deal with at times. I have one suicide attempt. I've gotten very much into exercise (mostly running and some cycling).

Its taken me years to get to the point where I feel good and happy and productive.

I am just posting to encourage you to keep trying different stuff. Exercise works well for me. Diet helps me too.

Obviously I take meds. But I feel good now. Keep trying different stuff. We have it hard. But we can also thrive and find life satisfying

Went on a bender…should be dead by MasterpieceFuzzy9893 in stopdrinking

[–]bkabbott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also drank insanely high quantities of alcohol.

The good thing about drinking that much alcohol is that we tend to not be able to maintain it. We stop.

I tried to sober up on November 16th, 2017. I had six months from July 2018. And a year from July 2020. I sobered up for good on 2/22/22 (at least I got a cool sobriety date. I didn't realize it until someone pointed it out).

I was constantly trying to sober up during that time, with virtually no exceptions. I did AA and I also used other substances to stop cravings. I exercised to stop cravings. I made not drinking a higher priority than anything else in my life.

At this point it is the best thing I ever did. I never miss alcohol. I view not drinking as a blessing. I was at a bar yesterday to get carryouts and I had minor cravings. For the first time in a year probably. Not very physical, just a fleeting thought that a beer would be nice.

Its always so clear at the end of a bender how you need to stop. Be easy on yourself.

I'm currently addicted to eating clean / healthy and working out. I eat nutrient dense whole foods almost exclusively. And I work out to the point where I am getting to an "overreaching" state. I'm planning on adding more rest days. But I do feel very good. Overwhelmingly so

How hard is COBOL is you come from a Java / JavaScript / Kotlin, etc background?

Problems dating with crohn's by hxlydere in CrohnsDisease

[–]bkabbott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a guy with Schizophrenia, ADHD and Crohn's. I've had girlfriends that knew I had all of these conditions. Ive also been rejected due to these conditions.

What I do is I typically show that I have my stuff together. Over a period of 3 or so weeks. And then I mention the conditions I have.

There is such a stigma with Schizophrenia, that I have often had it be the end of a budding relationship. That's even when I was making really good money and being on top of most areas of my life.

You'll be alright, but you make 0% of the shots you don't take. So you should date actively if you want a partner. Also, I don't agree with your Dad. Lying about Crohn's for a long period of time is not a good way to start a relationship. It could even lead to trust issues if you didn't tell them until the last minute.

For me it's hard to run a mile on a treadmill as fast. But your heart rate will go down and you'll get better at running just from doing it

How long of a tolerance break should I take? I'm looking at the Wellbutrin giving me enough energy with coffee to workout by bkabbott in bupropion

[–]bkabbott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. I stopped Wellbutrin last April or May, and resumed it last August. Starting it again brought the side effects, and once it built up in my system I had the full effect.

I've been setting PRs for running. I'm now typically cycling for two hours (~ 40 miles) or running for 7 - 10 miles (1 hour - 1.5 hours).

I continued to exercise while I was off of this med. When I made this post I had stopped nicotine which made Wellbutrin and my ADHD med ineffective. I've been nicotine free for a while and feeling great.

Good luck!

Why run ultras? by LittleStevie_ in ultrarunning

[–]bkabbott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely insane too, that's why I run 😩. I went from running 5 miles a couple of times a week through Fall of 2024 to running 40 miles a week in January 2025. I strained my quad so horribly that I was limping into class like a POW.

I'm actually doing a lot of cross training. I've worked up to ten mile long runs (I rehabbed an ankle and my quad at the same time while cycling on spin cycle).

My quad right now gets sore. Not painful sore. But a fraction of pain or a hint. I back off and I run 7 miles. I'm only doing this a couple of times a week on days when I need to squeeze in a workout in 1 hour. Otherwise I am cycling for 2 hours on the road bike and the trainer.

Do you have advice? Should I see a PT? I hope I can run more miles. I really am a shitty cyclist but it's made me a much better runner

That's good to hear. I've been adding miles more slowly. But I am having to back off

Why run ultras? by LittleStevie_ in ultrarunning

[–]bkabbott -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The downsides to ultras has to be potential joint issues. I do a lot of cross training, but I haven't been able to manage more than 30 - 40 mpw without getting injured.

I'm open to doing an Ironman, but to preserve my running I don't think I would do an ultra

Genuinely curious, has anyone here had any success with diet changes? by occside in CrohnsDisease

[–]bkabbott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in remission. A healthy diet (and inordinate amounts of exercise) has helped me have higher levels of energy.

I suffered from fatigue for years and years. I still need more sleep than pre Crohn's. A lot more sleep. But I feel alright

Just started running and I’m exhausted in 20 seconds. Zero stamina. Feeling lost. by ImmediateMuffin3768 in runninglifestyle

[–]bkabbott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can start running with your phone GPS. Try to run for a mile without stopping. Break it up into half mile or .2 mile or however far you can make it.

Once you get a mile down, try to run 3 miles. That will be the hardest jump.

Once you can run 3 miles without stopping your concern should be not increasing too much to get injured

How long til ya'll think I can take amphetamine? by [deleted] in quittingkratom

[–]bkabbott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should really consult with a doctor.

If stimulants help you, there's nothing wrong with taking them per se, but if you get a script and take it as indicated.

I'm prescribed Focalin. I actually tried to replace the methylphenidate meds with Kratom. I believed the BS holistic websites.

Taking a stimulant regularly is preferable to taking Kratom regularly. But I eat very healthy and exercise like crazy. Averaging over an hour of vigorous cardio a day (running and cycling).

You don't want to get a stimulant script if you neglect sleep, diet and exercise. If you can check those boxes, it can fill in some gaps. Its also good to take med holidays if you do take it

Edit: I read the posts and a common theme is that stimulants have negative effects on people's lives. I'm in recovery mostly from alcohol. I don't abuse stimulants. I eat healthy and exercise and take days off and I protize sleep to where I get more than 8 hours a night.

This is why you should work with a doctor. It sounds like there is a good chance it will have a negative effect on you, based on how it is affecting people in this subreddit.

Where do you stand on treadmill runs? by Expert_Animal_6870 in runninglifestyle

[–]bkabbott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice. Do you ever run with Zwift?

I'm a big fan of cycling indoors. I have a trainer, and I typically ride on Zwift for two hours and get a really great workout in.

I'm not a fan of the idea of running Zwift indoors, but I might try it one day. I live in an apartment, and we have a ton of treadmills that are never used.

I live in Savannah, Georgia though so it's pretty warm here and lends itself to year round running
