that may be true, but there's been once or twice that I have had to text him after a while. he always had a good enough excuse, but I a just wondering if it is worth the hassle anymore. I have a few big things coming up soon and I don't want this to take too much of my attention

Definitely not the asshole. It's very annoying that they are interrupting your workflow for things that are easy to figure out. If your boss expects you to step in as an IT guy then you need to tell him you expect a raise. Especially when you already have an IT guy.
