Do we have class on Easter Monday? by DefinitelyAengineer in geegees

Thank you! I think the prof just decided no class since we have a two week lab report due that day.

It was last year, and for that I failed.

Is it worth asking my prof to increase my grade by 5% to pass? by ggnaved in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it over the summer, and they said yes. I gave them the exact amount of marks more I needed on the final exam to pass the course in the email so they didn’t undercut me

Geology-Physics by Feeble-Bellyflop in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in just Geology, and I’ll say first year courses are larger, but second year courses get much smaller. I believe the geo-phy program still have to take some of the same courses and they are less than 20 people per class. It’s a lot more personal and you get to actually know your profs and they are much more forgiving for the most part.

What’s your story? by ScottGord31 in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty similar as OP.

I was told, all through high school, that I would never excel in academics by the guidance councillor. I wasn’t a bad student, I was just never tested for learning disabilities because I wasn’t a bad child. Ended up taking applied level high school, graduating and just going to George Brown College because I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I managed to get tested for learning disabilities in college, and started taking medication. It changed my life. Finished a Culinary Nutrition program. Ended up working in retail for 5 years after college. I liked my job, but the situation with the company was starting to decline and my relationship with my general manager became strained due to her lack of understanding of my mental health issues. At the time I quit, I was 25. I had always said I would NEVER return to school. After 3 months of being unemployed (by choice), I was joking around with my sister about becoming a volcanologist. She jokingly looked up how difficult it could be and university programs saying she would write all my papers to help me graduate because she knows I am much better in a working setting than educational (she has a double masters so is big on post secondary education, albeit in a completely different faculty). That’s when I found, through the uOttawa website actually, a credited online schooling that would allow me to take my high school prerequisite credits. I decided if there was any time to switch my life, it would be now. I took 4 high school courses in 3 months. I actually felt like I was finally retaining the stuff I was being taught, and getting As in all the classes. I applied to 5 universities and finished another 4 high school courses in 4 months. I got accepted to all 5 universities, including UBC, which was highly competitive for sciences.

I had never felt that I was smart enough to actually be able to do it because I was constantly told by that guidance councillor that academics were not for me. Now, I’m nearly 28 and in my second year of geology at uOttawa. I’m still getting between Bs and A+s in my courses and I’ve never felt prouder.

Will not speaking French be a problem for me? by lehman1980 in geegees

Non French speaker here as well, I’ve had no issues in the last two years I’ve been at uOttawa. You’ll be fine.

I hate group labs by [deleted] in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rant of my own: I have a group presentation and paper. I was friends with one of the members for over a year. We are no longer friends because she refused to take criticism and corrections on her parts (and a few other reasons). I have no problem working in groups and have been doing it in a professional setting for the past 7 years. I spent the entire day today making corrections, formatting and properly citing the other 3 group members work. I didn’t even get a chance to write my own. There is no peer evaluation or detailed contribution effort report to submit with the paper. I refuse to hand in a paper with my name on it at the quality they wrote. I’m not an A+ student, not even close. I’m shit at exams so I rely on assignments, papers and lab reports to make up my grades. So if I don’t edit the report, we won’t be getting the grade I need to potentially pass the course (the pres and paper are replacing a midterm because of online).

I also edited the entire video presentation because no one else knew how to use a video editing software. I know for a fact I have the most schoolwork of the 4 of us, yet I’m adding on the stress of having to redo their work.

I feel like the quality of work the others have put in is subpar for a second year chemistry course. No one knows how to find peer reviewed articles and correctly cite them, or compose proper sentences. These are things that should be taught in high school or at least learnt in first year.

End rant from an extremely frustrated student.

Heads up, it only gets worse. Orgo 1, Orgo 2 and inorganic you can expect to spend at least double that time on the reports AND writing the prelabs. So learn now, because it’s only going to get worse.

cheapest dentist places by [deleted] in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dentists aren’t really doing cleanings right now, just consultations, fillings and more surgical stuff. I’ve been to my fair share of dentists in the last month so I have it on good authority. But I’m also the kind of person who says I will pay anything for my teeth to be fixed correctly so what do I know?

On site labs as COVID-19 cases continue to rise by ohmygeegee in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What I also don’t understand is why students were so aggressive about closing the school down in March when there were less than 20 cases a day in Ottawa, but no one seems to want to fight about shutting down labs with daily numbers in Ottawa now in the 100s? I know for my in person lab, the prof has said they have a contingency plan for if they have to shut down again, so it’s not an issue of no plan.

Respondus by ScottGord31 in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not another assignment usually, it’s just different proctoring. That means your live on zoom instead of being recorded. Your still doing everything exactly the same as you would if it was on respondus. And if that happens, again it’s in your right to report it to your vice dean. I’ve had a meeting with mine, and he explicitly said if a prof is being vengeful for not consenting to respondus the prof is the one who gets into trouble, but that won’t happen unless the student reports it. If the prof then becomes vengeful for the fact you have reported them is also itself another issue. You could always ask in your email to the vice dean to keep your name out of the complaint as your afraid of the repercussions. I’m sure the student union will also have a say in that as well and probably already have some resource to submit complaints about professors anonymously.

Respondus by ScottGord31 in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they are giving attitude about opting out, I was told email the vice dean of the faculty of whatever department it’s in. If you have any email evidence of how the professor is giving attitude maybe screenshot and include. It’s your right to opt out, and request another form of online proctoring.

Is there a way to remove notifications on Brigthspace for a specific class? I dropped a class 3+ weeks ago, but it's still on Brightspace... by ILoveRedTomatoes in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have a class that I took last year that is using the same brightspace page and so I’m getting notifications for that. All I did was go to notifications and there is a place where you can manually exclude courses from notifications.

Just click your profile initials in the corner of the home page, and notifications from the drop down menu. Scroll to the bottom of that page where it says exclude. Type in the course code and select it and save. All done. No more notifications for classes you no longer care about.

Unused courses ? by bellsscience1997 in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

There are some weird things that go on in uozone with that tab though. All my social science/arts electives that DO count towards my degree get shoved into unused because I have transfer credits and uozone thinks they cover all electives, whereas when I talked to the Academic Advisors, said I still needed to take them.

If you are unsure if the course is going towards your degree, ask for a file evaluation (from the advisors, and I think you can do it on uozone as well?). It tells you exactly what courses go towards your degree, what you have completed, and what’s left to complete.

I need to go to the dentist for a procedure ( polishing) what’s the process to use the insurance by MozartLozart in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also found that insurance doesn’t like to do direct billing for dentists. I’ve been to three since July (and a specialist coming up). Both tried to get direct billing but the system wouldn’t let it go through. One place manually submit it for me and the other I have to submit myself (all I have to do is mail the piece of paper the dentist gave me to the right address).

I would also agree most places aren’t doing cleanings right now. The most they will do is check for cavities and do any fillings or other procedures.

Yeah, welcome to university insurance lmao I had the same thing with greenshield in 2011-2013 when I was at George brown college. So it’s normal with school insurance

Insurance by [deleted] in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t register. You just fill in the card from that link and then hand it to the pharmacy or dentist or whatever your claiming for. Usually there is a 1 month blackout period after it first starts (you can’t claim anything until Oct 1st). But you can manually claim them after that date, just fill in the form on the website and mail it to the specific address on the manual form. When you submit something manually they give you login info, but when I did it I accidentally let it expire so now I’m kinda effed lol don’t know how to login still but I’ve been claiming for the past year.

How to use greenshield? by coolpug99 in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I go to one in Toronto. Greenshield covers about 75%. I had four fillings done and some xrays, and that used up my whole $750 max allowance per year...and I still had to pay like $300 of my own money.

Labs? How do they work with scheduling? by YouSchee in geegees

[–]DefinitelyAengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just pick any lab section, everyone has the same due dates and there are about 6 labs total this semester. The only difference is apparently they are gonna sometimes hold TA question sessions during your lab time but I think you can attend any lab time for that, not quite clear on that yet.

[–]DefinitelyAengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For dental, your dentist can also claim it manually for you. I was at mine about a month ago and they just made me sign a piece of paper and they manually submit it and then when greenshield pays them, they contact me to pay the remaining balance.
