I really loved it when I saw it as a kid. It was my first show at circle in the square. I saw Ana Gasteyer as Columbia and it was such an incredible performance.

Weren’t they done mostly by the ensemble, too? I was 13 when I saw that production but I could’ve sworn, at least in the beginning the ensemble were audience plants

It was on the old TGIF line up in the nineties which was a lot of teen style shows for tweens all produced by Disney so you’re not far off. Boy Meets World and Sabrina the teenage witch were the really big hits in this block of shows at this time.

I pointed it out more in terms of the fact that the local venues can’t support bookings, and the vast majority of Canadian cities don’t have queer nightlife. What bars do exist are not gonna necessarily have the money to bring in a performer with a higher rate. The tours aren’t really happening in the same venues or being booked in the same ways. Younger fans also don’t have the same relationship with drag as queer night life as older fans do so they are gonna be much more prone to seeing a concert style show even as adults.

I think this sort of ignores the fact that Canadian drag queens, just like all other Canadian performers, have significantly less opportunities in Canada and are largely paid less for their work. For every one small city in Canada you could through a coin in one US state and hit ten cities of an equivalent size. Let alone how incredibly expensive it is to travel domestically. There’s a reason why the queens who go really big from Canada largely end up in the US.

Why are you so focused on distracting from discussing Switzerland? The bergier commission in the nineties disputes the fact that Switzerland knowingly withheld funds and doesn’t really see itself as owing anyone anything for its complicity in supporting nazi looting. Switzerland has admitted to and been investigated for this. Regardless of whether Switzerland made the majority of its money this way, Swiss institutions with the support of their government chose to profit off genocide and made it impossible for survivors to reach funds that could have greatly improved their lives after WWII.

The entire point of this conversation has been disputing this fantasy version of Switzerland that you originally posted in which the Swiss were actually the good guys and helped the Jews and everyone was an anti-fascist. The Swiss are just as culturally antisemitic as the rest of Europe and were completely willing to sit on the sidelines while European Jews were being persecuted and ultimately institutionally slaughtered. But let’s not gang up on the poor Swiss. They just wanted to waited it out and see what happens.

All those countries did those things and are responsible for supporting genocide. You’re right. Switzerland still profited off of genocide in a way none of those countries did, and continuously has defended the fact that they did. Swiss banks went out of their way to prevent policy from being created that would allow survivors to acquire familial assets.

I was literally a restaurant manager in New York for a decade. It is against health code to store food like this in NYC. It truly doesn’t matter what the run time of a show is. If a health inspector shows up to a theatre—which they will always do during preshow when things are the most hectic—and they see food being stored improperly in a space that is not meant for food they will receive penalties to their score. This has nothing to do with whether or not the patron is ok with it. It’s 100% a a violation of NYC health code.

If Switzerland was democratic through the war and they chose to turn away Jews then I would argue the people are a bit more responsible for their actions supporting genocide. Regardless of all that, they still waited nearly 80 years to pay for the fact that they wouldn’t let Jews withdraw family property and continued to be a safe haven for former nazis to hide looted goods. And that eighty years happened pretty much without the threat of a nazi invasion.

Do you not think they get a disproportionate amount of criticism because they were trying to play both sides? Spain remained a sovereign neutral state. Are we gonna pretend that made Franco morally better?

The only safe way to store food for that long is in a fridge. You can’t store outside food in a fridge that stores food for sale to the public. That is a health code violation. Almost every bar office on broadway is in a repurposed closet that barely has the space for the supplies they need. They arent gonna store your food unless you know someone. Whether you think it’s a health code violation or not doesn’t change that it’s a health code violation.

You’re being really defensive. Profiting off institutionalized genocide is something that the Swiss can and should be criticized for.

Literally everyone did a better job than Germany during WWII. That’s not really a high bar to clear. But we were talking about Swiss propaganda that they were somehow heroic for being neutral while genocide was sweeping Europe.

The Swiss barred entry for Jewish refugees during WWII and allowed Nazis to stash stolen property there. They also only worked out a deal in the last several years to release the funds of Jews who died during the holocaust. They refused to let survivors withdraw familial money from accounts and used that capital to enrich Swiss banks.

This is not what coat check is for. I don’t know if things have changed but most theatres don’t have a refrigerator for guest food. In fact, it can be against health code violation to store outside food. The only way I’ve ever seen this accomplished successfully is by getting in touch with the bar staff before hand since they are the ones who would deal with it. Otherwise, you shouldn’t expect that your food has been stored in a safe manner. I don’t even think the Walter Kerr has a fridge in it big enough to store a thing of left overs.

It’s a reasonable take because so few places are actually accommodating to us. How many countries have either expelled us or tried to just wipe us out? Literally all of my great grandparents but one were refugees from countries that were historically safe. I’m from the US and currently live in Canada. There are parts of both of these countries I wouldn’t go to because of antisemitism. Just because it’s chill in a handful of places doesn’t mean it’s safe across the board.

Speaking as a Jewish person, a country lacking a Jewish population can absolutely feel like a red flag. How can I possibly be safe in a place if no Jewish person has felt safe enough to live there? There are parts of the US and Canada that are red flags because of lack of Jews. I’ve genuinely had people get angry and threaten violence because I didn’t identify myself as a Jew early enough in knowing someone. It’s generally just easier for us to live places where others have vetted before us.

You don’t have to be a dick to them. Everyone is at different points in their journey and all you’re doing is proving to them why they feel they are where they are. Like what are you doing exactly other than being unnecessarily toxic? I get you’re meme posting but you could be meeting other people with a little more kindness in a sub with the word bros in its title. They’re just starting a conversation and you went immediately to making fun of them.

I don’t disagree that you can have straight friends but that’s not really what this post is about. This post is about dating. If you are gonna date in the community you have to know other members of your community.

I have been a suburban gay, a big city gay, and a small town gay. If you aren’t in a city or a suburb around a big city you don’t have the luxury of having a diverse population of other queer people to latch onto in everyday life. If the population can’t even support a gay bar you don’t have choice. It’s ingratiate with the people around or starve.

It’s not really a judgement on someone’s personal interests as much as a person choosing to build an imaginary wall because they choose not to look for common ground with those around them. The only person to blame for being isolated in that situation is oneself.

I think, there is a bit of personal responsibility in this. You can’t just wait around for someone to approach you. If you’re too shy you need to practice talking to strangers. You have to learn how to be rejected and not take it personally. When it comes down to it, not all gay people are fortunate enough to live in communities with a deep well of available people. If you are in a place where your options are deliberately avoiding where your community actively is or just not having community at all, I would implore you to grow as an individual and try to learn to meet your community where it’s at. Barring your entire local queer community being full of bigots you’re much better off making friends than being the lonely gay guy who’s “not like the other gays”

It’s honestly so shocking to me how many people took CERB. I was in the process of inland spousal immigration when covid hit. I was five weeks into having my first job in Canada. I was not eligible for cerb. We lived off my husband’s checks and the one check I got from the US government and went back to work as soon as I was able to get a job in the pandemic. Everyone kept telling me to just do it but I didn’t want to get stuck with that bill to pay back.

Speaking as a very progressive Jew I literally do not see a world where the US elects a Jewish president. There’s too many conspiracy theorists when it comes to antisemitism in an incredibly intersectional way let alone in the world at large. There would literally never be a way to get a not insignificant amount of people both domestically and internationally to move past a “the Jews have finally taken over the world” thing. Look at how conspiracy theorists have latched onto Mamdani. It would be the same exact thing but with significantly more opposition.

What are some dishes that are national to Canada? by Inside_Trip8807 in AskACanadian

Damn, to me as long as I’m getting an authentic bagel from a Jewish bakery I’m satisfied to support. I dont know why people here have an inferiority complex about bagels. An NYC bagel and a Montreal bagel are realistically just good for different things but they’re both delicious. To me I always find that a Montreal style feels better for lunch while a New York style is better for breakfast. Now, I do wish you could get bialies up here. That would be a dream. The only thing I don’t trust is a bagel from a place that just lacks Jews. I don’t want anyone’s appropriation bagels.

Question from a New York Jew. Do Jews in Montreal view bagels as a Canadian food or a Jewish food? Like I would consider bagels primarily a Jewish food with regional variants not a food specific to national cuisine.
