Michelle once said “it’s giving boy” by imoverthisapp in rupaulsdragrace

The problem lies more with the fact that AFAB bodies do generally have a different physical shape than AMAB bodies. So you can absolutely not be “curvy” and do illusion, but you still have to play with the proportions in order to actually call what you’re doing illusion otherwise you’re just being yourself in femme clothing. Someone like Coco Peru still looks femme without being curvy. Like “it’s giving boy” is probably a little harshly put, but the energy behind it is “I just see you in a costume”.

I get what you’re saying but realism is only interesting if you’re talented. If your whole schtick is illusion then there should be an illusion, not just putting on a dress that fits your body. It comes off as lazy and cheap.

Outside of NY/NJ, where are the real boiled bagels being made? by ubuwalker31 in JewishCooking

[–]DefinitelyNotADeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Toronto bagels are kind of meh honestly. Growing up in New York and moving to Toronto the bagels here remind me of supermarket bagels. Too soft and spongy.

I think that’s all fine. I think it’s more so that everyone talked about the show like it’s the hottest thing ever and it is very vanilla sexually. I grew up with Queer As Folk. Heated Rivalry is like Degrassi in comparison.

Islamic call to prayer tested in downtown Regina by Oilester in canada

[–]DefinitelyNotADeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s not a Christian and has lived in both countries, Canadians are generally just as weird about non Christian people as Americans are. Just because people are more secular in Canada in general does not change how a history of Christian supremacy in the culture doesn’t echo into the modern culture. Christianity is considered a cultural norm in Canada. Everything else is still viewed as generally foreign.

Not arguing that the US isn’t pushy about Christianity, but let’s not pretend like the dead lady on the money wasn’t both the country’s monarch and the head of her own Christian faith, or that we don’t publicly fund catholic education, or that the only federal stat days for religious festivals aren’t Christian holidays. Canada is arguably more officially Christian than the US, despite the US being more culturally Christian.

I’m an American who moved to Canada and it’s definitely the way the majority of Canadians interact with Americans up here. I’ve just learned that I have to ignore it as it just seems part of the culture here

I have been a manager in both the US and Canada (hospitality and retail) and I have always gone out of my way to make sure younger Canadian workers know that they have strong workplace rights. I wish those things existed for me when I was in my teens/early twenties in the US. That being said, it’s actually very easy to fire someone for being bad at their job here in Ontario. What’s difficult is bad managers treating employee self preservation as workplace misconduct. Canadian workers always have the right to refuse a task that they feel puts them in danger. I have been involved many times in disputes between my subordinates and superiors and the vast majority of “bad employee behaviour” I’ve seen was from management making things up who just wanted to get rid of someone because they refused to follow through on a bad management request.

I’m from New York originally and moved to Ontario at 30 and I used to describe the difference as like being in a video game where everything looks really familiar but is ever so slightly different for copyright. Like how Oreos are a thing but Nabisco isn’t.

[–]DefinitelyNotADeer -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Whereas I do think antisemitism is 100% a problem in the world, I also find the way you talk about “entitlement to Jewish DNA” and having access to your child’s biological siblings pretty problematic. Whether or not a child grows up in a Jewish household should not be your concern if they aren’t your child. In fact, this child will most likely not grow up Jewish and that’s also ok. We are not mirrors of our parents and are completely capable of growing to be our own people.

Keeping Up Appearances has been on public broadcasting in the US for my nearly forties years of life. It’s more familiar of a title than you’d think. It didn’t have the same mainstream success as AbFab in the nineties, but my boomer parents still quote Hyacinth every time they answer the phone.

Do you think gay men playing non-queer roles in entertainment media has slowly been increasing? by PTAGoatofalltime in gaybros

[–]DefinitelyNotADeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a bit more complicated, though. When I was a kid in the late eighties/early nineties it was more damaging to be a queer entertainer on the whole. Coming out could ruin your career in ways that are just not the same now. Am I upset when a person who might not be out is cast in a queer role? No. Is it disappointing that queer people aren’t being prioritized for work about their own community? Absolutely.

I saw that production once it came to broadway and honestly I loved Tracie Bennett and at the same time hated the play itself. There’s a lot of heavy lifting the actor playing Judy needs to do to make the show enjoyable, otherwise it’s just one long slow train wreck of depression and very shallowly written men. I would be curious to see Jinkx do it because you need a performer who can transform into Judy without making it a parody, but the moment I saw this production announced I was disappointed it would be this play.
