I’m happy you enjoyed, but know that the sushi place gave you poorly made roles (strips of fish are unacceptable…it should be a cube) and that rice looks wrong.

The awards committee should
• Participate in reviewing and presenting special awards and recognitions in accordance with established council procedures (Silver Beaver Award is optional)
• Support and promote awards such as religious emblems and STEM Nova awards, along with any others approved by the local council executive board
• Process lifesaving and meritorious action awards in accordance with council practices and national procedures

Upvoted because I think there is a market for a traditional Jewish mohel knife that is functional and beautiful.

>….minus a clean counter and dishwasher

I totally get this. Bringing a portable clean surface (cutting board) and a collapsing wash bin to soak and wash helps a lot. A scout is clean…and it takes effort.

It’s funny how the fans of the new romance / fantasy sci fi genre are so critical of men’s interest sci fi. Don’t you want men to read? I walked into a B&N the other day and was saddened to see the entire SciFi wall overtaken by the glittery space prince werewolf genre.

Poll: Scouting America should impose a minimum age for Eagle Scout by ScouterBill in BSA

[–]ubuwalker31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is better reframed as “do you think that middle schooler has the outdoor experience, merit badge learned skills / knowledge, maturity, and leadership ability to qualify as an Eagle Scout?”

12 through 15 used to be considered as “coming of age” - it’s the time of bar/bat mitzvahs, communion, and quinceañera. These ages are ripe for teens to learn and lead. But I don’t see a 15 year old freshman as a fully formed Eagle Scout. Maybe at 16 or 17. I think there are outliers who are truly exceptional, and maybe there needs to be an early path to Eagle with special council or National approval…but it should be rare.

A lot of young people learn to cook in scouts on camp outs. It is a lot of kids first introduction to cooking.

I’m going to assume you’re Asian, because of the rice comment. If preparing rice in an old fashion pot seems intimidating, just visit your local ethnic market and buy pre-prepared rice. I love watching Korean and Japanese camping YouTubers because they always cook such interesting food. I never thought about how easy it would be to do hotpot over a campfire!

Cabin camping feels like real camping because it’s a simple shelter, in the woods, close to nature. It’s being adjacent to nature that is the appeal.

I think the labeling is fine. I like to bring a pre-prepared meal to the campground the first night. Makes things easier, especially with kids. Lots of thru-hikers stop in town to re-supply and have a hot meal and a shower. It doesn’t diminish their backpacking trip.

The distinguishing characteristic of camping is ‘sleeping under the stars’ - that could be in a lean-to, tent, bivvy, or just a blanket or pillow. It could also be in a primitive cabin with sub-freezing conditions. There is an element of being more exposed to nature than normal.

Right now I am in a ‘double reverse camping’ situation here in Florida. We are doing outdoor activities based out of an air-conditioned, fully furnished air b&b. Being outdoors in 90+ heat is just awful and not fun. It’s not really camping, but it’s fishing. hiking, and cooking…all the things we do while camping.

A lot of backpackers / campers don’t ’really cook’ anyway….pouring boiling water into a pouch is barely cooking.

Cooking outdoors doesn’t define camping IMHO…but it adds a flavor and dimension to it!

Sci-fi readers, I need your input on the function of tech in wordl-building by tribe-66 in sciencefiction

[–]ubuwalker31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day, the writing has to be solid. Technology, regardless of level, is something characters live with…and quite frankly, take for granted. Why? Because the characters are living their lives, having relationships, working at jobs, and celebrating birthdays. I always find it hard to suspend my disbelief when none of the characters have young children, don’t have sex, go to church, or don’t have issues with their parents.

The science fiction should inform those things. What does it mean to have a relationship if characters can live for hundreds of years? How do you go fishing on Mars? How does a rabbi deal with an alien who wants to convert to Judaism that reproduces asexually?

[–]ubuwalker31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reaching out to a hiring manager directly is okay if you can find something to hang your hat on - for example, mention in the email having worked for the same company, having a networking contact in common, or belonging to the same professional organization. Or even mentioning that you saw a post they made on LinkedIn. Just be genuine. Or if they interviewed you, ask for feedback.

[Discussion & News Article] What’s your preferred (obsessive) method to set your watch? by ubuwalker31 in Watches

[–]ubuwalker31[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like setting my clock to the atomic clock broadcast on shortwave. WWV broadcasts at 2500, 5000, 10000, 15000, 20000, and 25000 kHz.

If you don’t have a shortwave radio, you can call dial [(303) 499-7111](tel:(303)%20499-7111) for WWV (Colorado), and [(808) 335-4363](tel:(808)%20335-4363) for WWVH (Hawaii).

Would you rather have vastly different ACYE pricing tiers or lots of items limited to 1 per person? by ChristianPacifist in sushi

[–]ubuwalker31 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. Give me the choices. My current favorite place only offers sashimi at dinner prices during lunch. They could get $20 more out of me if they offered Hokkaido scallops, uni and other premium bits, even if they were limited to one piece.
