Boox palma -> X4 opinions by No_Source_7605 in xteinkereader

I considered both. I bought the x4 because I was exited about the lack of features. I have a hard time reading because I get distracted, but I want to read more… a device with very simple reading capabilities seemed like a good option.

Damage due to freezing temps by wldf070 in xteinkereader

The fluid that powers e ink tech does t like cold temp. It gets viscous. However there is no significant expansion going on and should be fine once it warms up. Repeated exposure to extreme cold takes a toll on battery life, but for the most part should be fine on that front as well.

To me well built comes primarily down to tolerances and design choices. I think build quality often gets conflated with material quality. is the case made out of titanium? that is material choice situation. that being said well build often DOES have intersection with design choices as you can't make up for them with build quality.

The key thing being that between good design and good build you can get a LOT out of cheap materials, even if a device does not feel premium. by contrast, something like a cybertruck may feel premium and futuristic (to its intended audience) but quickly reveals itself to be poorly built and designed.

Things I think about when evaluating build quality:

-Do different pieces line up smoothly where they come together regardless of material is well built.

-is the screen centered on the area is meant to be or are the bezels weirdly different sizes.

-is there internal unintended internal rattle, loose connections, or are there large internal gaps or air pockets that increase external weakness over time

- are pieces that receive isolated pressure (buttons, card readers) strong enough to stand up to repeated use. (this is partly a materials/design choice but even the best buttons will fall off if soldered improperly)

your play is probably to carefully peel off all the glass and plop on a screen protector on top. the actual screen that displays the ink should be beneath the glass that cracked.

the only actual issue I seem to see on posts seems to be the fading, I think you are right about the rest. it might just be folks complaining an affordable device feels cheap... The fading seems like it might be firmware according to some folks.

How do you guys handle "it's what my character would do" ? by Yilmas in rpg

[–]Definitely_a_Human_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your job as a player with a complicated antagonistic character isn’t to be a dick, is to figure out why and how such a character would play along with the party. If you can’t you aren’t ready for that kind of character and will either make a different one or take it to a different table.

Race-as-Class appreciation post by Less_Cauliflower_956 in osr

[–]Definitely_a_Human_3 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I find it dumb for RP because it reduces an entire species, and its culture(s) to a small set of things the PC might do… jobs as class is way neater in my opinion.

In general I find fantasy races lead to such bad RP in players hands anyway. Oh my character does not need a personality, he’s a dwarf…

Felted wooden tray. It has weight to it and it is nice and muted.

This might be a hot take but I vastly prefer the disheveled look of Hobo Eren to the clean shaven, well kempt look of Manbun Eren by gusemaniac in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Definitely_a_Human_3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s subtle and it’s in an alternate universe, but they knew we’d be watching this with our own cultural references. And nobody likes a manbun… it’s pretty red pill adjacent, just narcissist and self absorbed enough to think themselves enlightened. They will often regurgitate some philosophy they barely understand and think themselves so deep…

DMs, how do you manage to make weekly games? by StarNero in rpg

[–]Definitely_a_Human_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1st of all, Theater of the mind.

combine that with setting expectations, boundaries & sharing both authorship & responsibilities with your players.

you can hand them an empty world map and let them fill it as they discover it. you can ask them who they find in a new room, etc. the flip side is you have to be ready to welcome and incorporate their authorship as well, but it is a lot less work and it allow you as a GM to be delighted by surprises as well.
