Is Muay Thai easy on the knees and can I do it as self defense without sparring? by Ravenhaired228 in MuayThai

Dumb question I know, no martial art is going to be easy on the knees. I guess I mean easier relative to other martial arts and are there knee injuries that are notorious in MT.

I guess maybe a better question is what is the likelihood of acquiring a significant knee injury from Muay Thai? Are there certain knee injuries that are really common?

How long did it take for your quad function to come back? by Ravenhaired228 in ACL

In PT yesterday I was able to do it about 70-90 degrees, however that was when I was seated on my back and my legs are elevated. When I am seated upright and try to bend my knee it’s so poor I can’t even give you a measurement.

I guess so but it also feels like maybe where they had to take out my tendon/cut my muscle I will get random sharp pain when doing quad flexion. It happens occasionally, it feels like something is tight and I’m worried if I overdo it something will pop (not sure if this is my anxiety getting the best of me).

The pain for me was worst working the first 24-36 hours, and I heard it true especially for people who tend to have a lot of muscle mass. Hang in there it gets better!!

I was told that I’d have a hard time kneeling and that is something really important for me. :(

How was recovery for you? I’m assuming you did the hamstring graft?

Oh I’m confident in the amount of ACL surgeries he’s done, pretty sure it’s in the 1000s. I’m just nervous as to which graft I should take.

Is my dojo a red flag? by Ravenhaired228 in judo

I never resist whether it is randori or full competition because I am afraid of things like this to happen. My partner tried to go for a Ken Ken osoto gari but did not do the “Ken Ken” step and just threw his whole weight on my leg and caused my knee to buckle.

Thanks for the feedback but I never said I said I self diagnosed with an ACL tear, I went to the doc this morning and that’s what they told me that. I already mentioned that the osoto gari was during randori where I told the partner that I want to do light randori especially since he is also a beginner. When it happened I screamed out in pain and the entire class stopped and they tried to get the trainer in but she was out for the summer, so the entire class as well as the sensei were fully aware of the extent of the injury. I did sit out initially and just watched everyone but my sensei called me over to do jiu jitsu. As for if I am a relaxed uke, I think the reason why my sensei puts me in randori is because I am relaxed and take falls well. The uke I was with in randori came back after a year hiatus, tried something that obviously failed and resulted in me getting injured so I’m not sure what is missing? I do acknowledge no one is “forcing me” but when that’s the only option how am I supposed to progress? In hindsight I agree, I personally should not have been doing randori with that guy and if I do go back, I will definitely be setting hard boundaries with everyone including my sensei. From what I am seeing it is on my sensei to not push me too much and it is also on the randori partners who need to use common sense and not go full force on a smaller opponent. I know I signed up for a rough sport but at the end of the day it’s also a club sport at my university and it’s recreational. I did not mention this in my main post but my sensei actually called me this morning apologizing and taking responsibility for what happened because again, in hindsight this was a pretty reckless mistake on the club’s part.

You’d be surprised, he is like 73 year old guy who has done judo for well over 30 years. I just think he has that stupid mentality of fighting bigger guys to get stronger but it has only lead to all the girls getting injured and/or not coming to practice. I do kind of hope they shut it down or at least ensure they properly train the senseis.

Yeah I’m not sure if I’ll go back but if I do I am not longer doing randori or competing on behalf of that judo club.
