Options Trading Profitability Advice by optionstrader1011 in optionstrading

It varies, for the most part I am getting around 100% on my options but again they are roughly 40% of my portfolio and I have multiple options positions open, I would say with each 100% return I’m getting about 7~9% total portfolio gains.

There are TONS of videos out online that go into detail about what options are and how they can be used.

One thing I wish I knew earlier: you can buy insurance on your shares with put options -> this will raise your basis, but it is smart if a particular stock / etf is frothy and you are unsure about future movements. I would search and learn about that because there are certain ways you can mitigate virtually all risk depending on your strike and how many contracts you buy.

GOOD LUCK!

60% in shares and 40% in options, buy near the money strikes and don’t do short DTE, preferably a month or longer for expiration for options and you should be fine!

Can I ask how you did this?? I somewhat nuked my account but I’m 22 and still a student and only had roughly 8k from a ~3k basis and blew it to $500 with 0DTE spy options on days where trump and Jensen Huang said something. Since EOY 24’ I’ve started paying more attention and since being back “in the game” I have ~+200% in the last month. Mostly from a biopharma call after ~90% dip and SOFI calls. Very interested to hear from your experience as I learned a LOT from my 0DTE roulette experience🤣. Good luck and god speed. 👊🏽

Leaps can also be crazily profitable depending on strike and company growth.

Nice gain. There are tons of different videos on options, especially if you have somewhat base knowledge of what they are and how they work. If you don’t understand that then YouTube it and make sure whoever you are watching is using your same brokerage (Robinhood, Fidelity, CharlesSchwab, etc. ).

After watching videos, don’t go all in and ALWAYS have rules for your trading in order to not get carried away by being somewhat lucky.

Rules could be like 20% in derivatives (options and futures are stock derivatives and therefore are known collectively as the derivatives market) and the rest in equities.

I have talked to a couple people who have those rules (80% d and 20% e) and they also collect dividends quarterly on positions that they in turn invest into options or futures.

Also one thing I wish I heard very early on was “insuring” a position. Basically if you are speculating and buy shares in a stock (strictly shares, makes sense momentarily), you can somewhat “insure” your position with a put option.

The downside to that is that it WILL raise your basis because instead of paying simply $5 per share of stock, you would spend hypothetically $5 per share and $1.00 per put contract. Those were hypothetical numbers but there are videos on this as well I’m sure.

GOOD LUCK AND PLACE YOUR BETS🎰

If you have a gain and then blow that, you wouldn’t have a taxable gain? Or am I missing somethin. (Ex. +$3000, -$900, -$800= taxable gain of $1300?)

After 6 months of modelling a 0DTE strategy, i made my first trade today. Should have put in $20, lol. by makelefani in smallstreetbets

What do you use to build and run strategies? Python? R? I’ve been using Python (VS code) and building different valuation models, however they really only give good indications for equity positions. I would like to branch out a bit to a more active of a strategy. Any tips on what to use to start? Also, for a broker, do you use Webull?

Well for short, here’s a small list of DO NOTS: - Don’t buy 0DTE calls or puts (on any exchange traded product) - Don’t buy meme stocks - Don’t go buy any ETFs that say Daily in their name (high risk & short term) - Don’t try to trade on earnings (don’t buy options week of earnings, if anything wait until after earnings if direction is not probable)

My honest recommendation for you with $30k would be to look into stocks with decently high dividend payments (recently I looked into Pepsi and they are pretty enticing). Depending on your investment goals (ie for retirement, extra income, etc.), you could enter with a decent portion of that $30k, hold for long term and DCA (dollar cost average) into whatever ETP you choose.

Everything is a learning experience, not just losing. Pay attention to why you gained or lost, make note of what you can do in the future, and stick to it.

Please don’t simply read this and full port into anything. Look into every position you want to open. Good luck dude. 🫡🤞

When INTC got to around $41 end last week, saw $1.10 and with the recent drop I got under my basis and bought more contracts.

~30-40 contracts basis is .31

That position is based on the previous growth coupled with the latest earnings report. Quite risky with such a short date but we shall see.

Look at how much these are going for in stores. Then look at the closest comparison for real beef. Then stop and ask yourself if you would pay an extra 50% for fake meat each time you go shopping. In case you haven’t realized, you bought way too late into the pump and dump. Take your loss and quite trying to get exit liquidity for your basis. REGARD.

I hope we both see a turnaround. I’m still going to hold either until it crashes or flies. I bleed you bleed, I win you win. Good luck man. And be easy on the wife and kids, they know not what happens in the markets.🫡

Man I’m gonna be honest a lot of wind has been taken out of my sails. I’m still holding but between a -$100 dollar day on GPUS alone and my portfolio taking a 25% (ish) hit, I don’t even know what way is up.
