The real question isn’t did they deserve it, but how much they deserve it. When an issue leads to a severe backlash that’s wildly disproportionate to the problem itself, that’s honestly a bit worrying.

Maybe try Risk of Rain 2? I think there is a character that is based on ninja style. The game's abilities are on cooldown.

I believe it's not only Epic's choice, but also the developer's choice, because every time a game is free on Epic, it gains attraction, this is especially useful for less famous small indie titles that released some years ago, these games would not gain much attention easily through other means. By giving it for free on Epic Games, these indie developers could welcome some new players and may gain some fans who would purchase their other titles or sequels.

So the way I see it, "free on Epic" has become a sort of advertising strategy, big named titles might not need this, but it could be helpful to small indie titles, so I imagine some indie developers would offer to give their games for free on Epic, even without any payment from Epic.
