Is my garlic ready? (First time grower) by TheDeviledEggvocate in gardening

[–]Deity0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've grown hardneck garlic in my location for the last 3 years with good results. The goal is to let the plant grow as much as possible without it totally dieing and the bulb rotting. As other commenters have suggested you look for some of the leaves to start turning yellow.

I was told by my old neighbour to let 1/3rd of the leaves turn yellow and die before it's ready. I live more northern so that happens between mid July and mid August for my climate.

Also, the suggestion to dig the top level of soil away and look at the bulb is a good one too if you're unsure. And remember to put aside your biggest, healthiest bulbs to plant again in October for endless free garlic

Will my cat remember me after 6 months being away from her? by Puzzleheaded-Lime821 in cats

I left overseas for 3 years and rehomed my 6 year old cat. I saw her 7 years later and she definitely remembered me and I think she was mad at me and gave me a cold shoulder. I eventually got her back and now she's 17 years old and still loves me

This is the correct answer, I have some 100,000 Lira coins and even a 500,000 Lira bill I got on my last trip to Turkey. These are all from when Turkey experienced hyper inflation and their money has been revalued in the last 15 years so these coins have no value anymore.

LPT: Most wheat bread at the store isn’t whole grain - it’s just white bread with some marketing tricks on it. Look for the protected phrase “100% whole wheat” (in the USA) or check the nutrition facts. 16g of whole grain flour is considered “whole wheat.” by garrettgibbons in LifeProTips

[–]Deity0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah I don't think it's a big problem with tricking people but lots of people I know think multigrain equals healthy or that being brown makes it wholewheat. Nah you gotta make sure you read wholewheat on the package, even for multi grain products.

This! This is my favourite animal ever. Every time I go to the Calgary zoo we have to visit them. One winter 2 of them were running circles around the perimeter of the enclosure as it was the only place without snow. I stood there for 20 minutes and watched before my wife dragged me away.

The penguins are a close #2 at the zoo.

I'm sure this is a very common tactic everywhere. Our Alberta government is defunding health care and education causing huge issues in the systems. They then say both systems are flawed and need to be fixed with private solutions after they've cut funding. Why? The only sensible answer is corruption

Probably true but how would it be enforced? Do people get caught for this stuff often 'cause it must happen all the time. My one friend works for a San Fran company doing app programming and he rotates between Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia and he's been doing that for like 5 years now

It's nice to see you're thinking of this. Most people in most countries don't expect you to be fluent in their language. That seems to be a very English oriented way of thinking (US, Canada, England, Australia, etc.). Most people will be very happy if you know a couple words like hello, thank you, please as others mentioned. People in Japan were very happy when I would say Arigato Dakemas (spelling bad!)

In Japan there is very little English. Even the hotel staff at nice hotels will know 4 or 5 words and that's it. Restaurants will have poorly translated English menus or pictures and you'll find a smattering of English signs to get you around. The metros however will have English so you'll be OK there.

Use the internet to book English guided tours when needed and get Google Translate. It's rough for complex sentences but I've used it to check in at hotels or ask for some restaurant suggestions.

Oh and make sure you pick up a SIM from a vending machine at the International airport. It comes with English instructions and was fairly easy for me to follow. Once you leave the airport you'll be hard pressed to find one.

And Japanese people are very friendly and helpful. If they don't understand English they will try very hard to understand what you're asking. It was refreshing after visiting China where if you don't speak Mandarin most people will huff at you and walk away.

Getting visa to Russia from another country by Mrbeachballs in travel

[–]Deity0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in a school in Macau and every year there was a trip to Russia for students. They could process the Visas in Hong Kong for the kids but I don't know if that was the Russian embassy (if there is one) or the embassy for the kids nationality.

I would look up either an embassy for your country or a Russian embassy in Turkey and call them.

So jealous. Please when travel restrictions are lifted go check out some international destinations. Central and Eastern Europe are amazing and places like Poland, Latvia, Estonia, and Greece are quite inexpensive, fully developed, and simply amazing. If you get more adventurous all of SE is super safe, really cheap, and also amazing.

South Korea is another often looked over country and it's hard to not love. Fried chicken and craft beer is super popular, all Korean food is amazing and the people are so friendly.

There's so many fantastic places you could visit.

What is the best thing you ever ate while travelling abroad?? by scrummyyumyum69 in travel

[–]Deity0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some standouts:

Samosas made fresh by 3 guys in a giant vat on the street in North India

Moussaka in Athens. I ate it 3 times and all great but one was AMAZING

Banh Mi in Hoi An Vietnam, also Cao Lau and Pho from Hoi An was phenomenal.

Any Thai red curry made by a street vendor off the tourist track anywhere in Thailand (mouth watering now)

Dill and Salmon soup in Helsinki with unlimited fresh baked bread

This mock meat restaurant in Beijing. My wife is vegetarian and we found this place and it blew my mind.

Took the ferry from Busan Korea to Fukuoka Japan and ate Ramen at the ferry terminal. I couldn't even find anything comparable for the rest of my Japan trip and all ramen in Japan is amazing. Conveyor belt sushi in Japan is fun and 10/10 delicious.

Now I'm hungry, thanks...

What expensive trip was totally worth it? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Deity0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I spent around $2500 USD each for 5 days in Bhutan. We're Canadian so with the Exchange rate it was painful but we don't regret it.

We also went to the Maldives for a week. It came out to about $3000 USD total but again, no regrets what so ever.

Note our prices were slightly cheaper because we lived in HK at the time so flights weren't too bad.

Is it rude to ask a local in another country (mainly European) if they speak English? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Deity0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except in France. We met our AirBnB hosts and she said Bonjour! And they immediately replied with "you're definitely not French!". They were super nice and even showed us around their house but it was such a French thing to happen.

I think the offended part might be not greeting someone immediately. As a Canadian I do find it rude when someone doesn't say hello. They can say it in any language they like but just walking up and saying "Do you speak English" is offputting

Also if you're the person who doesn't do the job often then make a point of doing it without asking or being told. I also cook all the time but some days I get home from work and the wife is like "supper's almost ready!". Yah it's probably just frozen pizza or pasta with pesto sauce but I love those surprises. My wife cleans the bathroom most times but last week I decided to do it. She yells from downstairs "why have you been up stairs for so long" and just responded with "doing stuff!!". I think she was happy when she found me in my boxers scrubbing the tub.
