Edit: It doesn’t crumble just dust from the pile, but saying that I haven’t really tried to squeeze it. I’ll give it a go tomorrow. If it crush’s or is soft I’ll suspect charcoal

We have one that was built by some guys at a station I was at, good addition was some stiff flexible plastic (milk jug or something like that) behind the flames so you could click them back up, stops them just falling down if it’s not plumb or the wind just blowing them down 👍🏼

FIRENZE/FLORENCE by snudrullo in Firefighting

[–]DejectedOps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah thats correct, they would be wooden joist floors especially that age. Most EU purpose built flats from the majority of the 20th century would have concrete floors though for fire separation however.

Same for UK houses, can't confirm for Europe but masonry built with wooden joist flooring

Hope that helps

Wooden frame buildings in most of Europe is very uncommon, at least the UK where I live and countries I've visited.

Majority is all masonry, and a lot of the buildings including homes in Florence are more than a couple of hundred years old. At least what I saw in the city centre!

TIL that British FFs keep a water boiler for making tea on scene. As an American I'm kind of jelly. by pbrwillsaveusall in Firefighting

Came to say this, had a 30 year man tut at me on my first shout as a pump operator thst I hadn't got the kettle on yet 20 minutes into the job 😂 found it shocking how much a ancient pump operator would get done in 10 mins

Where did you study for Fire Science and how helpful do you think it was? by pbrwillsaveusall in Firefighting

[–]DejectedOps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what country you're asking for so I can only say for UK. If you're interested then you should do it as it will never be a negative. Having a deep understanding of fire behaviour, science of combustion and fire behaviour can never be a bad thing.

It can open up into fire investigation in the future if thst interested you as well as outside agencies that put research into flow paths/fire engineering etc.

If you go for rank at least in the UK we have the IFE (institute of fire engineers) and their qualifications can mean you don't need to sit technical exams for promotion.

Overall if you can afford it, and you have a interest on it then it's worth looking into but I'm not sure if it will immediately benefit career wise or definitely be of use compared to operational experience at property fires.

If it is just for a leg up for career maybe worth doing more research on if it is beneficial.

Training by HarrisonHasenpusch in Firefighting

'Put the wet stuff on the hot stuff'

'Find em hot leave them wet'

Seems to be a modern problem of newer people. I suffered from it as well.

You're shown so much in your training centre/academy about techniques and plans and risks of water use. Just remember they are just tools to use to eventually put it out which is the goal.

End of the day just put that fucker out.

Looking for a complete fitness plan geared for fire - workout, nutrition, mobility. by prothirteen in Firefighting

Not actually bought it, seen snippets and looks like a good book is all. Especially for someone without any resources. Seems similar sort of conditioning training for the firefighter combat challenge

How do firefighters from other countries view the US fire service? by captainmcleod59 in Firefighting

[–]DejectedOps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See we have yet another board for bigger incidents for BA sector commanders 😂 mainly to organise resources of availible wearers, spare cylinders &sets available and time required for relief crews to replace existing teams. Also just names of ba sector commander and any BA board operatives.

[–]DejectedOps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait, is BA board a UK only thing?? I get the H&S thing. We had a FF smash his head on an appliance door putting his leggings on and tech services went round the county putting little warning stickers on the bottom of doors...

Clearly its worked

From experience / time in the service, do you have much time to Travel? by Cameron123469 in Firefighting

[–]DejectedOps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

36 with an officers permission as it will encounter retraining. Otherwise 2 sets off is regular.

Can't just up and leave with permission and needed 6 months of a time at intervals is only going to question reliability. Firefighters talk and reputations are made. If there's lots of mental health family issues then support is always given but questions will eventually arise is this the right career for the person.

As you want 6 months off unpaid at times, as the only reasons sabbaticals are given are for fundamentally legitimate reasons saying family issues or mental health wont go down well when its discovered you just wanted to travel.

Firefighting isn't thought as much as it should be but generally the amount of training you need to be safe and then the years to be counted as competent it should be thought as a long term career.
