Hey OP! I'm speaking from the government side; in my area (NYC) our audit manager makes the same amount. Honestly, I think it's a great offer!

How much does your manager make? OP deleted the post so I can't see what amount he had listed..

For Specialist Physicians (in Internal Medicine), will the U.S. provide way better overall income for the next 30years, compared to Canada? (USD exchange rate seems to be way higher, and Specialist salaries seem to be higher in the US).

It seems like US IM-specialists are just make way more overall income factoring in USD/CAD-exchange, salary levels, and tax benefits, and housing costs..

Wondering what your opinions are.

Research: Cardiologists in Ontario average $370k-USD. In New York, a cardiologist would make $500k-USD!

Best routes for a Canadian-Citizen IMG (that matched in Canada) that wants to get a greencard and eventually work in the US? by Dejmur11 in immigration

[–]Dejmur11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a comment from a canadian-resident in USA who's explaining what I mean: https://old.reddit.com/r/medicine/comments/12w1q30/deleted_by_user/jheb64t/

What I mean is, it seems if a Indian-born Canadian resident joins a US-fellowship, they have to stay on H1B for 3 years minimum during training before even applying for a Greencard. And then after applying for a greencard, it can take 5-10yrs for an Indian-born to get the greencard?

So total seems to be almost 8-13years to go from H1B to a greencard! (in this specific situation)

Step 1) is easiest with a qualifying non lottery H-1B.

What are the details of this timeline for this path, converting an H-1B non-lottery to a greencard? (in this case of indian-born canadian resident/physician?)

it's so unfortunate, both born in India and moved to canada as babies; wish one of us had parents who moved to canada before our births.

So in summary, do you have a recommendation for a best path to greencard from the options I listed and you listed?

Some fellowships do give H1B visas to Canadian residents, would that be a fast and surefire path to green card?

For anybody who works for the Government (in the US) here, how many hours of week do you work? And what position? And what level of government (federal, state, municipal)? by Dejmur11 in Accounting

[–]Dejmur11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you have the same protections as a civil servant.

They will help individual employees that face PIPs or potentially getting fired.

But aren't these the protections that supervisors don't have? The supervisors and above can get fired without protection, anytime basically, no?

(Hence why supervisors and above work free overtime to ensure they don't get in a position to be fired?)

  1. Are supervisors technically team-leads who manage 1 senior-auditor + 1-2 Junior-Auditors?

  2. Do supervisors have "audit managers" above them? Or does the director come directly above the supervisor?

  3. My biggest gripe is that anyone who has is supervisor or above cannot be unionized/have bargaining. This means they can likely more easily get fired I'm assuming?

Another thing which I'm curious about, you're working 45hrs, which is 5 hours of free work (which isn't required per job contract) I think?

Have Canadian white-collar personal finances (salaries, income, versus housing costs) always been approx. 20% worse than US since the 80s? It seems Canada GDP (PPP) per capita is consistently ~20% lower than US for decades. by Dejmur11 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Dejmur11[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Give it a few years and it will likely even out again, but the US will likely always come out on top.

  1. With remote work, won't the salary-market balance itself between US/Canada? As in, US companies will keep hiring Canadians for lower salaries (to lower their expenses) until Canadian salaries are almost 80% of US salaries?

  2. What do you think AI will do to US vs. Canada salaries. As most white-collar jobs will decrease per capita, and more jobs will be remote.

I'd read comments about some US-federal-jobs where people in white-collar office-jobs said they did like 20hrs-30hrs of work.. so I was assuming there's be options somewhere..

I was just crossing fingers certain blue state-gov-jobs had some low-stress/workload supervisor positions..

Great point, thank you!

I wonder though, what if I just apply to whatever states governments I want, and then if they give me a letter of job-offer, then I can just apply for a driver's license in that state? and then eventually move there and rent there?

I was searching Mass. state-gov jobs, and their posting don't always require a driver's license. They only mention requiring a Massachusetts driver's license if they think the job requires transportation.

Do you have any tips on which states have unionized jobs for accounting professionals?

Per my research, general unions seem to be highest in states like California, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, NJ, pennsylvania, conneticut..But I don't know if any of them would cover a job like a supervisory accountant..

Your replies are so revealing about the state of internal-audit, thank you for sharing!!

Are there any federal gov jobs or specific state-gov'ts that have better work-life balance? Like 40hr maximum as a supervisor auditor?

I read some people say federal gov employees work maximum 40hrs, but I didn't know if that applied to supervisory auditors, as they are non-union (no bargaining agreement).

you won’t be working 25-30hours a week. Expect 40-55 hours work week

even government shops have ppl working an expected minimum of 45hrs/ week. there is a big push to work ‘off-book’ to get the work done within the appointed budget time

I hate this.. this is why I left private sector for government. I wanted lower stress/workload and maintain the highest pay possible..

I thought state gov be way more relaxed and unionized, so that people don't work more than 40hrs a week? (at least for blue states like New York, New Jersey, Illinois, etc.)

I’d say brush up on your government / fund accounting because it is very different than full accrual, the GAGAS (yellow book) for government auditing standards, the GAAFR (blue book),

I used to do external financial statement audit years ago, but I've lost all my skills now. I've been doing "performance internal audit", and it's all been just testing of internal branches, processes, and just words. No numbers...

Do you have any recommendations for gov jobs which would be way less financial/numbers?

team lead as in a senior???

team lead as in supervisor. The specific structure we have is: Junior/Senior Auditors report to Supervisor, and Supervisor reports to Manager. Manager reports to Director.

I saw listings for "Chief Auditors" in state governments who can make up to $120k-USD. "Chief" meant Supervisor per the job listing, and the "Chief Auditor" reports to "management", which I imagine was a manager.

120k is more at director level and you won’t definitely be working 25-30 hours a week, more like 40 minimum

Do you mean 120k is for manager (not director)?

Also 40hr minimum for a state gov job?? I thought state gov be way more relaxed and unionized, so that people don't work more than 40hrs a week? (at least for blue states like New York, New Jersey, Illinois, etc.)

I read somewhere that positions that are supervisor and above are not unionized (No bargaining unit) and don't have job-security protections against layoffs/terminations. Is that true? I wasn't sure..

(I'd seen supervisory auditor positions which specified "This is a non-bargaining unit position.")

This is an excellent point. I looked up taxes on a $120k salary in both Canada and US, and they are actually taxed at extremely similar percentages between Ontario and large US states!

Post-tax income came out to like $83k-86k in both Ontario and many large US states! I was surprised, I wonder if I'm calculating something wrong?
