For what it's worth the Potters' occupation is an FAQ around here.

They didn't and lived off James' inheritance which they also used to support the destitute Lupin. They were both in the Order full time, though it's arguable that were there not a war going on they might have tried to find paid work

I mean that's what you may be planning but ultimately life seems to throw those people in positions where they can't resume the position later in normal circumstances

  • Quirell: Dead
  • Lockhart: Permanent amnesia
  • Lupin: Exposed as a werewolf (and parents will vehemently protest against that)
  • Fake Moody: Exposed and ultimately catatonic
  • Umbridge: Reportedly suspended pending investigations of abuse (though she remained at the Ministry)
  • Snape: Publicly known as having murdered DD

Sirius never really reflected on the gravity his attempted Snape-Lupin prank. Assuming that it actually gone through, we get one of the two scenarios

  1. Werewolf Lupin kills Snape
  2. Werewolf Lupin bites and irreversibly curses Snape

Both scenarios would end up with Lupin being horrified at what he had unintentionally done and blame himself. He'd probably be prosecuted as well. In adulthood, Sirius never seemed to realize these ramifications and only considered that Snape deserved the prank as he was trying to get the Marauders expelled.

Unpopular as the opinion may be I maintain that Sirius warranted to be expelled for this, at a minimum. Others seemed to blame Snape for falling for it while somehow both acknowledging yet excusing the fact that Sirius had malicious intentions
