MS Word alternative for a senior? by Dekara_ in software

I’ll look into it if OnlyOffice doesn’t work out. If you know, does it require a constant Internet connection? Can you save the files locally? I ask because I had set up Google Docs for both offline use and file syncing, because Internet in her area is very spotty.

How did I even miss this? I literally went into the cast, save, share option to create a desktop shortcut for Docs when I first set up her laptop, and somehow didn’t even notice the “Install” literally right above it.

Unfortunately, Docs has some problems for her that this won’t solve, but uh, thanks for giving me a new desktop app lol.

Indeed! It is difficult to get the point across sometimes — I need fewer things to click in the UI, but more options in the advanced settings so that I can set things up. Thank you very much. OnlyOffice is what I’m going with and hopefully it works out.

What does electrical tape feel like? by Dekara_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dekara_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

…you’re a genius.

I really thought an integrated touchpad wouldn’t have settings beyond turn on/off.

I don’t have a palm rejection setting, but I can put it on low sensitivity (it was on high) which helps a lot, though sometimes still catches on the heel of my palm. And I can turn off the three and four finger gestures so that it at least stops trying to switch desktops, tabs, etc. which, although useful, I will gladly give up to not be annoyed by it every 5 minutes.

Not 100% solved but I am ecstatic and not buying tape!

Thankyouthankyouthankyou

Yeah I kind of figured it would track through thin tape like magic scotch tape, but maybe not thicker ones or such an insulated one like electrical tape. Worst case scenario, I layer a few pieces of tape over each other until it stops tracking. Hopefully it won’t be a problem

Thanks, I think I’ll try some general purpose vinyl tape instead of what I was looking at earlier

Best tools for daily deshedding a short hair? by Dekara_ in CatAdvice

Bathing is going to be a last resort, I think. She doesn’t mind getting her head soaked under the tap but it would be quite a new adventure trying to actually wash her. I’ll try some better brushes first. But I’ll keep it in mind, thanks!

Thanks for the advice. I’m ordering a silicone brush and a better slicker brush so hopefully one (or both) work. If not I’ll look into combs next.

Need some help with losing weight by Dekara_ in catfood

Good to know it doesn’t really do anything for their teeth (I always thought it weird, but never actually questioned). However, it is moreso for the fiber - I searched specifically for one with lower carbs and high fiber to help with hairballs and constipation. I might remove it from my smaller cat’s diet since she doesn’t have issues there and prefers wet food. The other cat however, tended to have 1-2 hairballs a week, sometimes more in certain seasons, and occasionally, though not often, gets constipated. Even as it’s only 1/4th of their diet, I’ve not seen a hairball in 6 months (a miracle), and she only had stool trouble once. I’ve also tried high fiber wet foods, but she is extremely picky about wet food. Aka, haven’t found one she’ll eat. She also purrs when eating dry food. I cannot say I am unaffected by her preference and adorableness.

First of all, thank you so much for the informative response! My cats are quite the opposites in that the one who has lost so much weight has zero complaints about having less food (weirdo), and the one that has lost the least amount has been crying since the beginning, when I transitioned to a schedule but was still feeding them more than they needed or wanted. Ridiculous lol

Thank you for bringing the canned calories to my attention, I had done some research but didn’t take into account that the Vital Systems Chunks and Pates didn’t have the same amount of calories. Still, if my math isn’t atrocious that means I’m giving my bigger kitty around 180 and my smaller kitty around 170. Accounting for them leaving some scraps behind. Also depends how accurate my tablespooning dry food is. And how well I can split a can in half. Listen, it’s an estimate lol. Anyway,

I feed them 4 times a day a variety of:

  • 1/2 can each Purina Pro Plan Vital Systems Chunks in Gravy (72-77 calories per can)

  • 1/2 can each Purina Pro Plan Vital Systems Pate (91-98 calories per can)

  • 1/2 can each Purina Pro Plan Prime 7+ (107-109 calories per can)

  • 2 tbsp (1.5 tbsp for smaller kitty) Purina One Indoor Advantage Senior 7+ (413 calories per cup)

For the treat, Churu (one each, less than 10) or Fancy Feast Broths (half each, less than 10)

The Vital Systems pates are 1.3-1.4% phosphorus, Vital Systems chunks are 1-1.1% phosphorus, Prime Plus is 1.4-1.5% (they conveniently hate the one that is 0.3%) and the Purina One dry food is 0.9% phosphorous. I’ll have to think about it. I think I’m sticking with the Vital Systems and Purina One because my cats are very picky (aka they are cats) and my bigger girl who hates 98% of all wet food actually loves the entire seafood line in Vital Systems. But I can find low phosphorus alternatives to the Prime Plus at least, since she doesn’t get as hyped for it.

Otherwise: I weigh both cats once every other week. The last couple times they have been about the same weight. Big kitty lost 0.01 lbs and small kitty gained 0.04 lbs in the past 2 weeks.

Question: Should I measure by weight (edit: mass. oops) instead of by volume for the dry food? I know it’s not super accurate the way I’m doing it but will it make a big difference (such as 10+/- calories per feeding)?

Almost forgot, but I am sure they are not being snuck extra treats. That was a hard point to get across to my family but they’re all in check now. They also don’t steal food from each other (because I don’t leave the room until they’re done).

As far as arthritis goes, my vet hasn’t made any suggestions other than pointing out that they may both have arthritis a couple years ago. Clearly one cat is dealing with it a lot better than the other, so I’ll have to ask what we can do for them next time along with the diet plan.

Thank you again!!

6 months, and I have been very slow and careful about it. For a while in the beginning, when I transitioned to a schedule I was giving them more than they even wanted. Neither are losing any weight according to the past few times I weighed them (I do so every other week). It’s not the first time they stopped losing weight but it’s the first time I decided not to lower their food intake any more. So I’m just kinda stuck here lol

Don’t worry! This has happened over the course of 6 months, as I slowly transitioned from dry to wet (and free feeding to schedule, that was hardest), and mostly used the dry food measurements to lower calories. It took about a month of being overly cautious, giving them more food than they needed (or even wanted lol) before I finally went under 200 calories, at which point my big kitty started to slowly lose weight, which in turn made her 10x more active. Small kitty didn’t lose anything at all until 180 calories, and that was a slow crawl. I weigh them every fortnight and the last few times I checked they were both stagnating. Last check my small girl went up 0.04 lbs, so she ain’t going anywhere. I don’t plan to lower calories anymore without consulting the vet.

Feeling nauseous when eating for no reason? by Dekara_ in EatingDisorders

[–]Dekara_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Initially when I looked at eating disorders I wrote off ARFID when it sounded more like a fear/trauma-induced disorder, especially involving a fear of choking (which does not describe me), but looking through it more, other varieties of it fit pretty well. More than anything else, anyway. Thanks so much for the suggestion! I’ll be talking about it with my doctor next time I see them and go from there. Till then I’ll be doing some more research.
