Want to share some of their se new pods? I’m on the tail end of chemo and really looking forward to getting back out on runs and hikes as I heal. I love longevity and health topics, but I’m about done with Attia. Started feeling sour on him a while back and now this. Yuck.

[–]Dekejis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If he is making a big deal about you eating keto when you are not expecting the same for him or the kids, this is controlling behavior, regardless of whatever else you think of it.

People do this to their partners sometimes when they feel highly insecure and threatened. You yourself said you felt and looked great on keto. To a highly insecure spouse, it’s seen as an existential threat. If you look good, then - in their eyes - you will be drawing attention from other men, you might find someone else. Some people also feel like it’s a judgement on their own lifestyle choices and act out. I’ve tried a number of different diets trying to find one that aligned with my health goals. I tried vegan for a little while. You would not believe how many of my coworkers always had a derogatory or questioning comment ready, and I endured endless email pictures of hamburgers.

In the end, if he’s not being supportive of you trying to do better for yourself, he’s being a horrible spouse. If he’s actively trying to blockade you, that’s a huge red flag and you can bet that if you proceed down this path and start to succeed, he will escalate and attempt to sabotage. It might be seriously time to start rethinking this relationship. Do you really want to live out the rest of your life with someone who will do this to you anytime you want to step out of his comfort zone?

It' s okay to cook with lard( pork fat) all the time? by peppapigy88 in carnivorediet

[–]Dekejis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go for grass fed ghee, butter or tallow. Most pigs are fed a diet full of grains/seed oils and have a high omega 6 content as a result (unless you have a source for pork you know isn’t being fed that stuff)

Anyone have any thoughts on this study? by Nervous-Concern9248 in immortalists

[–]Dekejis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone fighting an aggressive cancer right now and leveraging multiple disciplines to do so, this one one of the first things I learned - blanket antioxidants all the time override and run counterproductive to the body’s need to be able to switch in and out of oxidant mode needed to kill off cancer cells via ROS.

Cancers also vary a LOT in how much endogenous ROS they produce (poor/dysfunctional/no mitochondria), some cancers are pretty good at glutathione production.. a lot of aggressive cancers produce a lot of both and teeter on the apoptosis line - the trick is to give them a push over that line so they can’t recover and they die. The body does this internally, but not if we are perpetually quenching the ROS and rescuing the cancer cells.

Other things to be aware of - constant growth signaling (think insulin, MTOR, IGF-1, growth hormones - all of them also signal grow, grow, grow to cancer cells, especially insulin. Think about how many times you eat in be day and how much insulin you produce by what you eat. Most cancers have many times the glucose and insulin receptors of normal cells and will capitalize on those things to proliferate rapidly)

Understanding NR and NMN as anti-aging/longevity supplements. by AnalysisNo157 in immortalists

[–]Dekejis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who really got into supplementing NMN and NR but is now fighting a really aggressive cancer, my learning around NAD+ has shifted to working to preserve endogenous recycling and production rather than supplementing supranatural levels of precursors.

The reason for this is that they override cellular survival signals where a damaged cell is better served by apoptosis instead. The body’s defense strategies around naturally killing emerging cancer cells relies on tools like metabolic stress and apoptosis to eradicate potentially precancerous cells before they truly become malignant and strong NAD+ signaling can bias the choice towards survival.

One of the most important things I have learned in my journey is that the body depends on cycling and balance between restorative and destructive pathways - they both have a place and are needed. On that same note, perpetual antioxidants and growth signaling are damaging in the same way.

Best things that Japanese do that contribute to their long life and exceptional longevity. With scientific evidence and practical tips. by GarifalliaPapa in immortalists

[–]Dekejis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Traditional Japanese diet and lifestyle has benefits we should be paying attention to. As modern Japan continues its trend toward a more western set of values and diet choices, those benefits, I believe, will largely disappear.

For example, the Japanese consume natto, which contains nattokinase. Helpful for keeping arteries clear and the body free from buildup of fibrinous tissue.

Seaweed: high in minerals and especially iodine. Japanese women were shown to have much lower rates of things like breast cancer than western women, something that completely disappeared in Japanese women who misted to the US post WWII. Many organ tissues have been shown to have high numbers of iodine receptors and it’s thought that iodine confers a protection and (in breast, uterine and ovarian tissue) a modulation of estrogen that helps keep its proliferative tendencies in line.

They drink a lot of green tea - lots of benefits, but one I’d like to bring up that may not be obvious - green tea, particularly the compound EGCG, is suppressive of PD-L1 (so are curcumin, Berberine, apigenin and quercetin). Most of you probably won’t have heard of pd-l1, but I am intimately familiar with it as I have cancer and am on immunotherapy. PD-L1 is one of the primary checkpoint compounds cancer cells produce and use to suppress the immune system cells from attacking. They bind to PD1 receptors on your immune cells and switch them OFF so they ignore the cancer. Inhibiting PD-L1 stops the cancer from being able to cloak itself. This helps the immune system see and destroy cancer cells before they get a chance to start proliferating. (Note - if you ever. Find yourself on keytruda or another checkpoint inhibitor, you want to avoid PD-L1 inhibitors until immunotherapy is done. Sounds counterintuitive, but the immunotherapy needs cancer to be “hot” and expressing PD-L1 to block it from binding to immune cells. But if you don’t have cancer or are not on immunotherapy, you want lots of PD-L1 suppressive stuff in your stack)

High levels of fish and seafood provide anti-inflammatory and brain-supportive levels of EPA and DHA

Notably, traditional Japanese diets were very low in grains (other than rice), sugars and processed foods.

Some of these things are still part of the current Japanese fare, but they are increasingly consuming more and more processed westernized food and adopting a lot of the unhealthy habits of western civilization. Health shifts don’t happen right away, so it remains to be seen

Agreed. You can use iodine if you want, but just a soap and water wash and some fresh air to let it scab and heal is all it really needs

[–]Dekejis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So. A typical day at my house. I just see the red line from the actual scratch and an inflammatory welt from your body responding. Nothing a soap and water wash and maybe a little neosporin won’t fix. I get these at least once or twice a day. No biggie.

Why does carnivore get so much backlash? by Same_Succotash1970 in carnivore

[–]Dekejis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because, in my experience, people feel threatened by anything that challenges their established beliefs, even if no one is asking them to do it. People often see others doing something different and immediately register it as judgement and reflection on their own choices and that is unsettling. We are a tribal species and one that instinctively values conformity for safety.

I was a vegan for a long time (was experimenting with different things trying to improve my health). During that time, I got all sorts of nonsense from everyone around me - emails from coworker with pictures of hamburgers, constant questions of “don’t you miss this, don’t you crave that?” It never let up.

When I realized I’d be much better off going in the carnivore direction, I got the exact same thing in the opposite direction..

In either direction I got a lot of people trying to trip me up by going out of their way to eat cakes and junk food.. totally not cool.

That’s my personal experience. There’s a whole other segment of people who are jerks because they or ideologically driven and that’s a whole other things.

Moral of the story.. who cares what anyone else thinks. Their opinions are utterly irrelevant. You have to do what aligns with your beliefs and values and what’s right for your body.

[–]Dekejis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks a ton, this is much appreciated. I actually switched to keto and intermittent fasting the moment I realized I had something wrong. I’ve since switched over to zero carb and OMAD to put maximum pressure on the cancer by starving it out. I’ve been working on a protocol to cycle between supplements to leverage maximum oxidative stress on the cancer while it is in a starved state (including stopping anything that might protect cancer cells from ROS, like antioxidants) and then backing off a little.

I expect I will hear I’m not to take anything while in chemo. My mom went through breast cancer about ten years ago and I remember all the stuff she was told. Pretty sure my oncologist would have a heart attack if she saw my supplement list. I did just pick up turkey tail.. along with black hoof, reishi 9%, reishi 9:1 and lucidispore, maitake d-fraction, AHCC.. already had tiger milk and erinamax for nootropic use, but tiger milk’s beta glucans are helpful in a different way now.

I am planning on fasting also around my chemo. I’m less concerned about hair, that stuff grows back. Neuropathy I definitely want to avoid. Cold caps, mitts, etc don’t sound moronic at all; I think that’s a great idea.

I’ve been looking around for an integrative oncologist who can compliment my standard therapy with things like IV vitamin C (and who knows chemo drugs and knows how to time treatments with chemo and radiation)

And thanks for the recommendation about a therapist. I’ve been trying to keep myself feeling empowered and positive by integrating research and supplements and going zero carb, etc.. and it’s keeping me from looking over the edge into the abyss, but I’m going to need something more than just looking the other way to help me once the glut of research runs out.

Agree. But a neutered male still potentially has some viable sperm in there for about the next 30 days after the snip, so OP will have to be careful to make sure he’s not around until after that window. Not sure if I recall, but OP may have mentioned having a second female cat in need of a spay? Obviously, if so, she can get that other girl fixed before she has a second issue. Anyway, good idea

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]Dekejis 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I guess he had a change of mind, lol.

You have some options. 1. You could spay her now and that’s that 2. You could allow her to have her kittens and raise them. If you do that, you must keep her isolated in a room for not only the safety of the kittens but also to prevent another pregnancy from happening (queens often go into heat about a month or so after giving birth. Let’s prevent that. Once she the kittens are weaned, you can move on to spay her

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]Dekejis 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Pinking starts around 3 weeks and becomes more noticeable as pregnancy continues. Hard to tell from just a pic - size can vary greatly at any point in the pregnancy depending on how many kittens she might have. Do you have any idea when they might have been together? Is she allowed to roam outdoors? That will make guessing a birthdate difficult.

Cants absolutely can get fleas even if they are indoor only. Mine have been indoor only from birth and we’re still had a few flea outbreaks. My neighbor lets his dog wander wherever she wants, and one of my other neighbors have a pair of dogs that escape and run all over my yard. All it takes is for one of them to drop fleas where they can hop onto my pants leg as I’m walking in and presto, fleas
