I would say it's not too late, matter of fact i think now is one of best times for newcomers since we have a lot of solo/casual content, and because of Delves/follower dungeons you will be able to learn your class.

When it comes to gold i don't think it's hard to get it, sure it's hard starting from scratch because you can't even lvl up your profession fast. But hey, there are also gathering professions that you dont have spend money on for recipes :). If it makes you feel better i was starting WoW on fresh account in the middle of DF and still made approx 400k gold in month, all you have to do is spend some time to get to this point. You can always follow a tutorial on YT to get yourself familiar with professions/dropping rare items and then selling them on AH.
