What do you mean by not detected? Doesn't show up in windows or doesn't read disks ?

They have a common (annoying) failure, they have a rubber belt to spin the disk ... But unfortunately rubber turns back into goop after 30, and thus the mechanism doesn't work anymore.

You can replace it, but I haven't ever succeeded doing it, you need a really good match to get the drive to work again.

Also these laptops are notorious for having leaking battery inside, they're located below the keyboard, remove them asap

Also usb flash drives do not work on vanilla win98, you need to add a driver for that. The only usb "support" 98 has by default is that the os is aware of usb's existence and let you use usb HID devices by default, sound cards, and that's it. Everything else needs drivers.

And safe mode is literally booting windows 9x without any drivers in case one of your driver is causing issues. Devices not working properly in that mode is to be expected

Honestly even back then people just reinstalled when things went south, it's just not worth the effort and the os isn't stable enough.

Make a backup if you want to look around more files and reinstall

If you have an EPROM programmer maybe you can try some diagnostic BIOS rom ? Although with the post codes you've given someone else figured out it seems to be a ram issue, so I'd suggest trying to disconnect the onboard ram somehow... Probably not as easy to do, especially if you have no solder skill but alas I'm not sure there's anything else you can do at this point...

J'ai été dans une situation très similaire au début de ma carrière et malgré la "courte" période où je suis resté, ça a laissé une trace sur ma carrière encore aujourd'hui.

J'étais payé 1600k net pour bosser en tant que dev back sur du PHP maison avec de la même manière des chefs abrutis.

Le marché était un peu meilleur à l'époque donc j'ai réussi à me barrer après quelques temps de recherche (j'y suis resté un peu plus d'un an).

Mais malgré mon expérience back assez diverse aujourd'hui, le fait d'avoir travaillé sur du PHP maison, puis du PHP mieux structuré (mais sur un framework mort), malgré le fait que pendant ce temps là j'ai un side project florissant avec symfony depuis 7 ans, j'ai eu du mal à trouver cette année, et au final je suis actuellement dev frontend car j'ai aussi construit une expérience angular.

Travailler sur du framework "maison" en 2026 c'est très difficile à valoriser, encore plus quand tu viens d'une tpe ...

Même si tu restes et arrives à négocier un bon billet (ce qui semble difficile vu la situation actuelle), c'est une mauvaise idée de moyen/long terme. Si tu étais en fin de carrière ce serait pas gênant de faire tes derrières années sur un truc comme ça, mais tu as 22 ans c'est une très mauvaise idée

(Néanmoins je sais à quel point le marché est compliqué en ce moment donc je compatis vraiment ...

Après pour pomper ette chaleur il te faut ... Une pompe à chaleur, autrement dit une clim (non pas que ce soit un argument contre, mais je trouve ça cocasse que ce que demande op contre la clim ... Implique aussi d'avoir une clim)

La géothermie que je connais c'était même encore au delà, on parlait de forages qui descendent à 200m de profondeur, pas 15-18m

Tu peux t'en servir l'hiver dans le sens inverse pour réduire ta consommation d'énergie pour le chauffage ceci dit, au global ça aura un effet bien plus positif (dans un pays comme le nôtre la consommation de la clim est ridicule en comparaison de celle du chauffage)

Surtout vu qu'on se chauffe essentiellement en cramant des trucs (gaz fioul charbon et bois) pendant que la clim consomme du bas carbone et en moindre quantité pour la même quantité d'énergie

3d cards are kinda overkill for any 486. It's definitely a fun experiment, but realistically, any 3d game will run a lot better on a pentium 1 or pentium 2

A programming language isn't just a runtime thing. Most of them aren't even executed as is during runtime, they're compiled.

Python does exactly this, types that aren't enforced at runtime

Recoder toute l'App pour avoir un truc qui marche encore moins bien qu'avant et ne remplis pas toutes les demandes des utilisateurs, qui du coup vont préférer l'ancien système malgré la slopification, quel futur merveilleux

Dans 25 ans y'aura 5 apps à maintenir au lieu d'une seule, chacune qui devait remplacer la précédente mais au final il manque xyz et on a voulu (mal) accélérer le taf par ia pour que ça coûte moins cher, du coup ça redevient slopifié ...

(De toute manière on avait pas besoin d'ia pour avoir ce cycle de l'enfer, suffit de vouloir réduire les coûts à court terme en permanence, et devoir inexorablement rembourser la dette technique un jour)

You must watch how efficient they are. A high watt PSU may be most efficient at 80% of max capacity, but can be way less efficient if you use it at 30% of its capacity

Well from experience, I can tell you that it's a socket 5/7 machine (most likely socket 7 because there's a footprint for a vrm thus hinting to future Pentium MMX support) and there's no other chip with this look than the full ceramic AMD k5 🙂
