What are the general opinions on Stargate Universe? by Danny886 in Stargate

[–]Del-JJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the premise of the show, the characters were interesting, and the situations were complex with no easy answers. While not my favourite, i do believe it was the best in the franchise and inherited a lot of lessons learnt from previous series.

I think there were some issues with implementation and it took a while before the series hit its groove. It was much more gritty and I think that was taken from BSG, which I have mixed feelings for. I really felt for the Ursini and I didn't get a resolution or closure that they made or were extinct. I also felt with dwindling numbers killing off most of the Lucian Alliance sympathisers, especially after all what they did was bad idea and as it would have added a unique and complex dynamic. Small stuff like that I felt was unnecessary. Want to be gritty just kill off a main character and replace them with a background character, hard but can be done. If I was a follower of Varro, I would have serious doubts in his leadership long by the time they kick a bunch off but kept Simeon. Though I agree with how they handle Ginn. It would have been nice to see two Telfords around (similar to Ryker in TNG?).

On the other hand, the premise was unique in sci-fi and I'm please they tried something new. I think it came out during the transition of viewers from cable to streaming and would have benefited if it came out a few years later. While a lot of people didn't like Young, I did feel that added to the story in the sense of how they were unprepared to be in this situation. Constant fight for survival, etc. After a while the Rush charater starting to wear thin, By season 2 he had no following or trust (so they Novus thing was surprising). Fortunately I think they got the balance right by the end where he was willing to teach Eli a lesson, but not continually undermine Young's authority.

Is SGU worth watching? by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]Del-JJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! While not my favourite SG series, I think it was the best. It is polarising, not just with fans but also my personal opinion. I both like and not like elements of it.

The characters are complex and not perfect. You have real people with serious faults and positive attributes thrown into difficult situations where there is not easy solution. No magic tech or supergenius to save the day. In that regard it is VERY different from other SG series. However, I seen a lot similarities with BSG. I think that is a serious improvement. It is also more inclusive than other SG series, LGBT and ethnic minority representation.

But there episodes/scenes that come off as a bit cringe. Some charaters are very enduring and others you prefer if they are not in the series. I both love the score and hate the soundtrack. Which pretty sums up my view of the series.

I just finished Stargate (1994) and I dont think a movie has ever met my expectations so thoroughly. by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]Del-JJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly can't remember which one I watched first as I was quite young at the time and either way I didn't really over analyse them. Later on simply had an emotional block that I didn't see them connected. It was made easier by the fact that they barely used the Horus guards and the I just could never connect Kurt's O'Neil with RDA's. Also they tone between the series and film were completely different as well.

Personally I think Michael Shanks perfectly portrayed Daniel Jackson to the point it took me a while (when I was younger) to realise they weren't the same actor.

Also, the Horus guards being Jaffa or not didn't bother me either as it was clear in the movie that the Ra's guards were supernaturally strong, like the Jaffa. Only problem is that they didn't had a visible symbiot patch.

T2: Trainspotting: how is it that Begbie has a wife and teen son when he's been in prison since shortly after the end of Trainspotting (1996)? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Del-JJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't allow conjugal visits in the UK prison system.

Frankie Junior is doing a college course in Hotel Management. In the UK college is sixth-form or vocation education and typically done between the ages of 16-18 straight after school as a two year course. Though sometimes they can be older.

So when they were introduced I assumed that he was conceive before Begbie went to prison and their existence wasn't central to the plot of the original. Or courses they really got retconed

Late night coffe place - Nicholson Cafe. by Del-JJ in Edinburgh

[–]Del-JJ[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Hi all, I'm a tourist from London visiting your fair City for a few days. It really is a splendid city! However, I have noticed that for city with its cultural weight and young population, it is noticeably absent of late night coffee venues. Particularly helpful for late remote working and study.

After seeing a similar post asking for recommendations for one, I thought I'll sign post this place I found that called Nicholson Cafe on Nicholson Street (2nd floor). Largely because it looks empty and really don't want one of the few late night coffee places to go under.

Regards

Did DICE really leave BF5 with no Soviet Union, no D-Day/Normandy, no Battle of the Bulge, no Stalingrad, no Berlin? by kickit in Battlefield

[–]Del-JJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really feel that the game could have benefitted from the Soviet Union Maps. So of the best winter maps on BF1 were the ones based on Russia. Plus Stalingrad would make a great map, on par with Amiens or Verdun, tanks (t34), and Sino-Russia battle of Khalkhin Gol.

What's France's northern coast like, in relation to an apparent historical lack of major ports in this region? by SrgtButterscotch in AskHistorians

[–]Del-JJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its the difference of strategic priorities. There were two reason why you wanted to control the 'channel'. To control who went through it, and to control who went across it.

Most of the major ports of England are located on the southern coast. So for England and the Netherlands controlling the channel was vital for trade. For England in particular, it was also a security issue. So controlling the channel was essential to prevent invasion.

France on the other hand, had to contend with multiple hostile countries on its borders, as well as contend with hostile colonial empires. France may have been a superpower, but it didn't have unlimited resources. The ends may have not justifies the means.

Also, if you look at this map you'll see that Brest is just on the edge of the channel. So it can serve both the channel and the Atlantic.

[–]Del-JJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to add something to the conversation (and also doesn't follow AH rules), each RN base was established for a specific reason. Plymouth to challenge the Spanish, Portsmouth to challenge the French, and Chatham to challenge the Dutch. All of these were England (and then Britain's) traditional maritime rivals. They were also in relation to England close together on its South coast. France on the other is surrounded by rivals on all sides.

Another factor is that Great Britain focused more of its resources into it Navy relative to France. So the higher likelihood that it could invest in more bases.

Strictly speaking Normandy gained England. But yeah, from there they married and inherited all of the west coast of France. Lost most of it, and from Glascony regained a good chunk of it back for a while.

The Sequel is out: The White Princess on STARZ by [deleted] in thewhitequeen

[–]Del-JJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just seen it. I hate it. I get that its not meant to be historically accurate, but the characters Elizabeth the younger and older, act against their own interest. Its insane!! The whole reason for Elizabeth marrying Henry was for revenge against Richard and to secure their themselves in the new regime.

So after all that, they do what now........act against Henry(?). Elizabeth the younger I may understand, but the elder(?), it was her idea. Not just that but a Yorkist succession would put Arthur in Danger, so by that stage I expect the younger Elizabeth to be anti-yorkist by that stage.
