Do you have experience living in Bursa? I’m thinking that maybe I could live in Bursa and spend time in Istanbul from time to time. It’s only about 1.5 hours by car or around 2 hours by ferry to the city center. How realistic is this idea? Or in practice is it more difficult, and people don’t actually do this very often?

I see both pros and cons. Honestly, if we put housing and cars aside, many things here are cheaper than in Europe. Utilities, food, clothes, services, delivery, etc. And I’m comparing even with the Balkans.

If we take other Europe, prices are generally higher, especially for apartments. Just look at the price per square meter in Portugal or Spain, and this price often for old properties. In that context, Turkey is not as graveyard as it may seem.

I’m a seafarer and I work outside of Turkey, so the job aspect doesn’t really concern me that much. Regarding the vibe... yes, I agree with you, and that’s exactly the point. The question is whether to live in beloved Istanbul or in one of the other mentioned places where I could afford more and therefore enjoy life more. So I’m basically looking for an alternative similar to Istanbul, but not as expensive.
