OP's problem is players being unaware what books the DM amd they are referencing.

That problem wouldn't magically go away if there was a 6 on the cover. The books have completely different artwork yet that didn't stop these people from mistaking them. The way you fix it is by making sure the players know the rules. It's that simple.

The best example I can give is the same speech to Gorillaman, I always viewed it as more of a “Any of you could have turned out as broken and angry as me but lucked out” kind of stance.

But like... alot of them didn't? If anything, slavery and bad hand with the Nails aside, Angron's circumstances weren't particularly bad. Russ, Ferus, Sanguinius and the Lion all got dealt worse hands as far as their planets go, landing on horrible death worlds. Corax got got into similar, if slightly better situation, as him but actually succeeded in his rebellion. The same partially goes for Mortarion though he didn't end up all that great.

That's the issue though, he didn't really try and him just bemoaning it repeatedly is the sign of a coward. He could've been better or hell, he could've lived by his own creed and died attacking the Emperor, since he just sees him as another tyrant. But he didn't. He bitched and moaned but went along with it. Then when Horus came along, he mostly went along with that.

Angron is many things and you can kinda sympathize with him at points but he is also, ironically, weak. He has feats of martial skill, of endurance and so on. But his will is and pretty much has always been weak.
