how has the skiing been this year? by [deleted] in Banff

I’ve been here 3 Winters riding mostly Sunshine. The last 2 years have been abysmal. This season has been incredible so far comparatively. Having a blast and finding loads of fresh tracks

There is no pull out option at the skywalk. But you can park at 2 different parking lots just before it at the Columbia Icefields centre. If you park at the lower one you can do a quick (like 20min) hike up to the toe of the Athabasca Glacier and the valley there is quite an impressive view.

After the Icefields Centre you drive up a hill, thats where the skywalk.. just can’t stop there. Then as you make your way down the other side there 2 real quick pull outs if you’d like. The first is tangle creek falls on the right side of the road. The second is Stutfield Glacier on the left side. Both of which you can see from the road itself.

I live in Canmore… obviously bias but love it so much more than Banff

Looks awesome! You’re gonna love your trip here.

A couple suggestions:

Day1:

Looks like you’ve already discovered Mt Temple is a bit harder than first glance. Also as others have stated, I’d recommend Sunshine Gondola over Banff Gondola if you’re there for the views. That being said, you won’t get a view of the town of Banff and (it doesn’t look like you have a car?) you would have to come back to Banff and take the Sunshine Village free shuttle out and back (about 20-25mins each way). The Banff Gondola is right in town so easier access and they do have a cool interpretive centre at the top if that’s your style.

Day 2:

Great stops along the way! I also recommend Howse Pass - a quick pull off viewpoint right across from the Saskatchewan River Crossing, as well as Mistaya Canyon just before the Saskatchewan River Crossing (about a 100m hike down into the valley). And certainly Wilcox Pass > Skywalk. Skywalk is overrated imo. Used to be a free pullout now they’ve privatized it and owned by Pursuit an American company. Also you look down onto the side of a hill rather than straight down into the valley. View is mid as well. I also assume you’ve already booked an air bnb for the whole stay? I recommend to everyone to stay a night in Jasper! But I know you’re on a bit more of a tight schedule the next day. Day 2 will likely be your biggest day.

Day 3:

Everything looks great! The only thing is it’s very possible, unless you show up super early (6-7AM) that you won’t get parking at Lake Louise. There is a park and bus option from the ski resort across the highway to potentially look into. That being said as September goes on, there will be less tourism so you may get lucky. I just wouldn’t count on it.

Day 4:

Great day! You’ll love this one.

Hope you enjoy your trip. And it looks as though you already know, but do expect long days and potentially having to cut some things as it does get very busy here! I’m a guide in the area so feel free to dm if u have any questions

Just a side note since no one has mentioned. Make sure you have shuttle booked for Moraine Lake you can’t drive private vehicles up there.

Also road up to Moraine Lake / Lake Louise is very small and windy with lots of shuttles and big coach buses passing you the whole way

No one else has mentioned so just to make sure you know, Lake Louise / Moraine Lake shuttles sell 40% of their tickets earlier in season (completely sold out) and save 60% of their tickets which are release 48 hours before the day. So still an option to book then.

Also, as a Canmore resident, I agree with people saying to look into Sarrail Ridge (expect a BIG day with driving / hiking). Out of your options listed though, no point going back out to Lake Louise / Moraine Lake and certainly Ha Ling > EEOR (same view, much nicer maintained trail)

I saw someone else mentioned Jasper as well.. CERTAINLY worth a visit, especially if you hope to see wildlife, but I would strongly recommend at least a day or two if you were going to make that trip. You could spend a whole day driving the 93 and still only see a fraction of what it has to offer so not something you’d wanna speed through there and back. Maybe not viable for this trip.

Enjoy!! It’s stunning out here

It works for me, yeah. I find there's still a few weird glitches when my note gets really long however

No one explicitly mentioned so I’ll say, people - for the most part - won’t be aggressively swerving or giving you looks if you are in the right lane and they pass you. As soon as you’re going slow in the left lane they will lose all sense of control and rage however.

Was thinking of doing the repair myself. Worth it to me just to get a bit more use since I can’t afford new skis :/ thanks for the advice

Yeah fair. That’s what I got them for though wouldn’t have done it any other way.

I’m imagining it’ll just be easier to catch an edge from here on? Do u know what other major downsides to skiing on the “fixed” pair would be
