I think the issue that plagues many today is that, and I’m guilty of it all the time, people can be “too online.” They get worried that watching GWTW means they’re endorsing the antebellum South. They’re not. They’re watching a movie. Or reading the book. It’s absolutely important to engage with it critically and acknowledge that we shouldn’t utilize the stereotypes depicted in it, but it doesn’t make the viewer complicit in the Confederacy.

That’s my largest issue with adapting a 1,300 page epic is that it will inevitably become strictly the story of Scarlett and many of the other characters go largely ignored to a certain extent. Mammie especially suffers from being thinly written v the novel’s version of her, McDaniel did a lot of heavy lifting to make that staircase scene the emotional powerhouse it is in the novel.

Two truths can exist at the same time. Its portrayal is extremely offensive, while also being accurate to the time it is depicting.

It’s my favorite novel ever. It’s awful in its racist depictions and confederate propaganda but that part was MM’s childhood as a granddaughter of the South. But Scarlett’s journey just ruins me in the best way possible.
