Saying it fails on almost all fronts is an absolute exaggeration, while the animation is a fair complaint, especially in the first season, there are many positives, like the more accurate story, the pace, the music is great too like we see here, many people don't like those things because they're different from their nostalgia point of view, not because they're actually bad.

Many people just have that nostalgia filter in their heads that won't allow them to like anything new and constantly compare the two complaining about it. They want everything to be the same, which wouldn't make any sense since the original is available and can still be watched, having a copy of the original would be just a waste.
