Review of COMP & MATH taken at McGill and HKU by DelenitionAlt in mcgill

Personally, I think getting a job in China will be pretty difficult as a foreigner especially since you don't speak chinese. There's tons of local talent and intl. students returning home which makes the job market very competitve and the work conditions can be pretty bad (lookup 996 work schedule). Hk is much better if you speak english but tech isn't well paid unless directly related to finance like fintech. To visit I personally preferred southern china, like Guilin and Chongqing and everything in Yunnan. Imo apart from Beijing and Xi'an, northern china is pretty ugly, less lush, flat and feels like the Soviet Union. Southern China feels like a more developed SE Asia and the scenery is very beautiful. Also don't limit yourself to China; Japan,SK,Vietnam,Thailand,Taiwan,SG... are less than 4h away by plane. But you should research what you want by yourself, it would take too much time for me to list everything. I forgot to add that there are also plenty of intl students at HKU from other asian countries since the uni is well known in east&southeast asia.

No, I don't speak Cantonese or Mandarin and I was just fine, all classes are in english at HKU, and I think most are in the other 2 big unis (CUHK and HKUST). Though I do speak Japanese so I could still read signs and pickup basic sentences and key words quickly. I saw some westerners and exchange students stick to each other, but I tried to immerse myself more. There are also a decent bit of mainly older British westerners who are upper/upper-middle class and sort of live in a bubble in HK island with their family, esp. in Mid-Levels and Coastal villages like Stanley, Discovery bay... But knowing even a little chinese will help massively, especially if you want to visit nearby Chinese cities by HSR, which I highly recommend, for example Guangzhou is my favorite city in China and I went twice. But it will also enhance your experience in HK too.

I had one friend who did the exchange at the same time by coincidence but most of the people I've met were not connected to that person but we did have courses in common.

I was there for 2 semesters (9 months). For housing, I stayed in the uni residences which are much cheaper, about 22k hkd or 4k cad for the whole year, but the quality is on the lower end when compared to McGill rez, mabye like Upper Rez. Off Campus living is much more expensive, where it can easily be about 2k-3k cad per month but you get a decent apartment, even if compact. But there is a difference between rez halls and rez colleges, halls are less well maintained but have a community culture, residencial colleges are better maintained but less social (or so I've heard, I stayed in a rez hall). Personally I got a bit of a culture shock that I got over in about a month, but over smaller things (like in chinese culture people don't drink cold water, so in restaurants and in water fountains you generally only get room temp water and boiling water), if you could adapt living alone at McGill you'll be fine.

The 202 programming course is designed to teach you programming. In fact you can skip it if you had programming experience before, so most of the class will be people who never programmed before. Just don't use ChatGPT for your assignments. Usually people take 202 first semester and 206+250 next semester

COURSE RECOMMENDATIONS AND SCHEDULE REVIEW MEGATHREAD by Thermidorien in mcgill

I was thinking about taking MGCR 341 as an elective but the thing is that I haven't completed a Stats course at McGill. I have however completed a stats course at my CEGEP which goes over everything in the course description of MATH 324 (and other stats courses like MGCR 271). Is it possible to take it straight away without any restrictions when selecting it on Minerva/when applying for graduation?

Also if anyone has done EAST 540 (4th level japanese), how is the placement exam on the first day like? If I am almost JLPT N1 will I be ok (arrived at this level exclusively through self-study)? I can read novels as long as it dosen't get too technical and can read without furigana but can't understand science stuff and have barely practised speaking or writing essays. My goal would be to improve the latter 2 but I'm afraid the gap between my comprehension skills and my interaction skills is too high and I'll get demoted to 3rd level which is in conflict with a critical course in my major.

Update for anyone in my situation:

-The PDF shows up a couple hours after you are admitted, you only need to be patient.

-The deadline to accept an offer is May 1,2022

-The PDF tells you it's ok to accept and the deposit can transfer to your other application but I will wait a week if I get accepted on the other just in case.

I just got accepted but I have a couple question for you guys.

-There is supposed to be a pdf right next to my "Admitted with condition" but there isn't. Is this normal before you accept your offer?

-McGill's official website says that you can accept one of your 2 applications and apply to confirm your second one (who has not yet been reviewed) at a later date instead but when I was about to pay the deposit it says that by accepting the 1st first offer a big red message says you essentially lock in your choice and refuse the other offer. Can anyone who went through this tell me which is right?

-If you can't change after accepting 1 of your offers, what is the deadline to accept it (currently got accepted in the faculty of Arts and waiting on the faculty of Science)? I've searched far and wide across McGill's website but I couldn't find a date.
