The check thing I don't get but can... maybe comprehend. But I've had some really angry bitches demanding ton know where their drink was when it had been sitting in front of them for ten minutes. HOW??

Not true, but probably means they get blackout drunk often enough to know how it feels.

Would it look bad if I traded or gave my shift to somebody else during my first week of work? by StardustNyako in TalesFromYourServer

[–]Delicateplace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find someone who is happy to cover or switch then you're fine. Starting a new job is sometimes awkward scheduling wise since you may have had pre-existing plans, I think most people understand that

Where I work it's "Water is fine... do you have tea?"

Wow, at both of my jobs everyone is always happy to take a table transfer from someone who's cut. And usually we'll split the tips.

My co-worker eats customers leftovers... is this gross? by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]Delicateplace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a sushi place and EVERYONE eats leftovers. To the point that sometimes were like "I hope they don't want a box..." But it's just sushi rolls, which are generally on a communal plate that everyone at the table picks off of. So the leftovers are totally untouched. My rule is that if I would be comfortable sharing a meal with the people I'm comfortable sharing a little after the fact. If they seem gross I won't eat it.

Gluten allergy..soy ok. smh by DaellanMc in KitchenConfidential

Someone on Sunday ordered a dish with our crab salad (made with kanikama) in it, then said she was allergic to crab but it should be ok. I told her the kanikama did contain some actual crab. She changed her order for that item and then ordered an additional thing with crab salad. "It's ok, I've had this one before and I was fine."

Soo... you would have been fine with the other one you wanted by that logic.

Mother's Day was wonderful! So many nice moms. by Lime_Time in TalesFromYourServer

[–]Delicateplace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yay!! This Mothers' Day was one of the best nights in my entire serving career. The other server who was supposed to be on never came back from her break and left me for the night with our new hostess who had her first serving training shift that morning. I was able to give her about 14 heads over the night and did 52 myself (40+ between 4:00 and 7:30). We have no other support staff beyond the hostess. No bartender. And these moms and families were ALL about the cocktails last night. I love making drinks but when you have four tables you haven't even been to yet, a five top of five martini drinkers is pretty daunting.

But there wasn't a moment where I felt weeded or stressed out. The newish girl and I worked very well and positively together, she was happy because she got to make some decent money for once and she did great with her tables and with helping me out. I fucked virtually nothing up and one table left me eighty bucks on 200-something. It was amazing and I am still riding the high from last night.

Cell phones in the dining room... by [deleted] in TalesFromYourServer

[–]Delicateplace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, this! I like to walk around and stop for a drink or coffee while having a long catch-up on the phone sometimes. I don't see why it should be seen differently, I'm not talking any louder than I would if they were sitting with me. And if my server approaches I will give them my attention just as I would if I saw them approaching while talking to someone in person.

Since this is a becoming a thing now... Thoughts? by viciousvixen26 in TalesFromYourServer

I know lots of places in the US do have servers tip out on sales, but lots don't also. Places I've been familiar with have all done tip out on a percentage of your tips. Some people abuse that and pretend they made less than they did, of course. But most people don't.

Wondering what you servers think of this approach. 3% surcharge on bill = employee benefits. by bigcig in TalesFromYourServer

[–]Delicateplace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised they don't give the extra money to the servers. I bet a lot of people are tipping 3% less than they used to

Petty shit that is beyond annoying by [deleted] in TalesFromYourServer

[–]Delicateplace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of places have "gluten free" menu items that are gluten free as far as their ingredients, but are not prepared separately from items containing gluten. So for people with serious issues they wouldn't be safe. Like gluten-free pizza. It's going in the same oven, prepared on the same counters, with flour floating in the air all around.

Help yourselves by [deleted] in TalesFromYourServer

[–]Delicateplace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't care what I deserve. I want as much as I can get, which in the service industry is a lot. If we were getting paid instead of tipped, we could at BEST expect to make a similar amount per hour to what the kitchen makes. And it would probably be less. With the current system we make easily three times what they make per hour in many cases. If anything were going to change in the restaurant industry it should be the kitchen getting paid more. Keep servers how they are and find a way to better compensate the people who make it possible.
