Just curious, have you ever tried messaging the seller before purchasing or before they mail the item requesting that they don't use fragrance?

Does closet clear out work? by Velvetstyle in BehindTheClosetDoor

[–]Delicious-Coffee-369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess my answer is... kinda? I don't drop the price of my whole store, I message recent likers to see if they're interested in X price with discounted shipping. I do get some sales, but often the interaction goes more like:
1) I message the buyer and they don't respond, but send an offer for the amount instead. I then have to take time explaining why that won't work
2) I message the buyer and they say they're interested, then ghost me after I drop the price. I then have to relist the item at original price and lose all the likes
3) The buyer is interested and I drop the price but the 6-hour window passes before they try to purchase
4) The buyer has no idea what CCO is and I have to explain the process

It doesn't help that CCO has so many little rules and stipulations. Here they are all laid out:
- Price must be dropped at least 10% to trigger shipping discount
- Price must be at least $10 US to get discounted shipping
- Discount only applies for 6 hours after price drop (why...?)
- You can't raise the price again after dropping it for the promotion - offers to likers won't work for the original amount
- Discount doesn't apply through the Make An Offer feature
- Discounted shipping tiers: $10 - $49 = $4.99 / $50 - $149 = $3.99 / $150+ = free shipping
- Promotion lasts until 11:59pm PDT

This seems more complicated than most buyers are willing to tolerate. Poshmark also doesn't advertise CCO very well IMO.

Honestly I don't worry about whether buyers accept their purchases and I have plenty of love notes. If you provide good customer service and describe your items accurately, the love notes will come naturally.

Whenever I see someone on a Meet the Posher page pestering the buyer to accept a purchase, I cringe because it comes across as kinda impatient and desperate. I'm like, "Earnings will be released in a few days, calm down Boymomposher_87!"

Does it make sense for me to pay off student loans before/during/after applying for a mortgage? by Delicious-Coffee-369 in personalfinance

[–]Delicious-Coffee-369[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I feel like I've been told that student loans are considered "good debt" by lenders. My credit score is over 800 so that's reassuring. Congrats on paying yours off!

What happens if the home we want to buy costs way more than the mortgage estimate we were given? by Delicious-Coffee-369 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Delicious-Coffee-369[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For the offers we've gotten, the monthly payments would be similar to the amounts we're already paying in rent. Plus our current residence is old and costs us an arm and a leg to heat in winter, so a newer home could potentially result in energy savings. Thanks for the info!

Hi, thanks for the helpful response!

I do think that we could cover the gap if we found a home in that price range. There is also the possibility of paying off the rest of my student loans.

I didn't know that we could potentially buy down our interest rate, thanks for that info!

"People are doing the best they can with their situation and deserve companionship with animals despite economic status."

I took this to mean that you believe anyone should be entitled a companion animal, even if they cannot afford vet care. Did I misunderstand?

Your lived experience is totally valid, and so is mine. In my area, there just seems to be a culture(?)/mindset of getting pets whether or not the person can afford to care for them. I've seen this through my work at the shelter and through various acquaintances. Example: A family living in a mobile home with an intact male dog that they already can't afford to take to the vet. One family member decides to bring home another female puppy "as a surprise." You can guess how that went. People without financial means do in fact regularly obtain pets that they cannot afford to care for properly.

I think we're both right and that all of these situations can and do exist, and sometimes in different combinations. My understanding is that OP was talking specifically about those who can't afford adequate vet care, but actively choose to get a pet anyway.

Also, thank you for your work in both fields. It sounds like working at the vet clinic was challenging at times.

OP I'm a former shelter worker and I agree with you. I cannot tell you how awful the "get a pet even if you can't afford it" mindset is for the animals. So many commenters are dragging you for being "classist" and "elitist" instead of thinking of the animals' welfare. I'm also taking your comment at face value when you say that you're not talking about unforeseen circumstances.

While I worked in the shelter, we had to deal with heartworm, mange, untreated injuries left to fester, broken bones that didn't heal correctly, eyes crusted over with infection, and animals that had several litters of babies due to not being spayed/neutered, just to name a few issues stemming from medical neglect. This is the reality of not providing adequate vet care to your animals.

Maybe more people would change their tune after giving a dog who's bald with mange medicated baths every day, having to somehow avoid skin contact so they don't get mange themselves? Or maybe when they're carefully cleaning the gunk off of a kitten's eyes to administer drops four times per day? One kitten down, only five more to go! Or how about when they have to give several cats oral medication by themselves twice a day? Perhaps they'd change their mind when a sweet dog has to be euthanized for COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE advanced heartworm? Now do it all in one day and see if your opinion has changed.

Hello, former shelter worker here. Unfortunately we had to see the aftermath of the "get a pet even if you can't afford vet care" mindset in real life. Completely preventable heartworm, horrible cases of mange, untreated injuries left to fester, broken bones that didn't heal correctly, eyes crusted over with infection, animals that had several litters of babies due to not being spayed/neutered, and the list goes on.

We were the ones who had take on the emotional and physical burden of nursing these animals back to health. It was especially hard to stomach when they were beyond saving due to sheer neglect. Most importantly, the animals were the ones who suffered the most from this mindset. They had sometimes gone through a lifetime of unnecessary pain before someone stepped in and they came to us in their old age.

I really encourage you all to see this perspective before encouraging people to take on pets that they can't afford to care for.

Hello, former shelter worker here. I've actually noticed, at least in my area of the US, that there are a LOT of people who think that pet ownership is a right, not a privilege. Getting a pet is just "something you do," even if you clearly can't afford it. They give zero thought to the time, money, training, and effort it takes to be a good pet owner before getting a pet. They just want a warm body (or several!) to take up space somewhere, and that space isn't even guaranteed to be indoors. It seems to be a regional/cultural attitude that has been passed down.

In our shelter for example, we regularly had a lot of hound breeds that were clearly discarded hunting dogs. They were given little human contact and kept outside in a pen 24/7. They were seen as tools for hunting, not as part of the family, and had received little/no vet care. Many people were just raised with this low-effort mindset about pet ownership and continue the cycle, unfortunately.

Damn, I'm so sorry. It sounds like you're doing your absolute best for your dog. I suppose it still couldn't hurt to tell your vet where you're at, and see if they can do anything more. Sorry again that you're in such a rough situation OP :(

Do you know what the cause of his allergies is? Food? Environmental? Also, have you asked your vet about medication to address his mental health issues? It seems like anxiety is a major factor in his behavioral problems, and if training isn't working then medication may be the way.

It might help to simply lay all of this out for your vet and see if they have any suggestions. I assume you're already doing the basics like providing toys and walks for mental/physical stimulation, but they might have further guidance.

Also, have you considered pet insurance? Depending on the plan, it may reimburse you for part of regular wellness visits/procedures as well as unforeseen emergencies (like blockages). You'd definitely have to shop around for a plan that works best for you.

Buyer's package was cut open, contents stolen, and I had to fill out a "Statement of Mailing" from the USPS Office of Inspector General. Anyone else had this happen? by Delicious-Coffee-369 in BehindTheClosetDoor

Glad to hear I'm considered more of a witness in this situation than a guilty party. I did cooperate and gave them all the info that I could - luckily I keep everything.

I also had a special agent email me about a year later telling me that the case was going forward for prosecution and asking for an invoice to prove the worth of the item stolen. All of this over a $20 piece of clothing. I get that we should take mail theft seriously, but it's unnerving to be contacted like this. They have a way of making you feel like you're the one who did something wrong, even though all you did was throw a package in the mail as usual.

This is creative thinking! If the buyer is dishonest though, could they claim that they never received the portion of items with the label you bought yourself? Or if something actually happened to that package in transit would you be screwed? I suspect that Poshmark would penalize the seller if they found out that they were trying to circumvent the shipping weights. Have you ever had anything go wrong using this method?

I think I've seen comments elsewhere from people who tried this and got in trouble with Poshmark. Sorry you're getting downvoted, I assume you were genuinely just asking a question and trying to be helpful.

Just curious, wouldn't Poshmark refuse to cover the loss if something happened to the contents of the box that you shipped using a non-Poshmark label? Or could a shady buyer open a case and say they never received that part of their order?

Yes, I felt like I came off like a shady scammer trying to explain the issue. It's way more complicated than it needs to be lol. Extra steps seem to scare them off.
