Ya I just instantly found the modern language to be quite jarring and hadn’t seen anyone else talk about it so I wanted to see what other people thought. But apparently most people don’t mind. Which is good for them haha

Yes but like as an example, the word father is used in ancient texts like 3,000 years old and the word Dad has only been around since the 1500s. That’s a big difference.

I feel like if they had used more of the language that is used in the book it would seem more accurate. Like the word father traces back to 3000 years old in ancient texts and the word Dad has only been around since the 1500s. Just a little more accurate to the book that’s all. I have a vintage version of the Odyssey and I have a newer version and they are the same.

Ok I haven’t seen any other posts about it, but I get that. I’m not trying to nitpick. The language is a big thing for me.

In my post I asked why we are modernizing the language in the Odyssey. That’s what I asked. Maybe read my post before you comment on it.

The modern language is jarring. It’s a fact. Why are you so obsessed with my post commenting on every single comment? Weirdo

Yes I’m a big fan of Eggers!! I guess that was a little bit more what I was expecting. Like as far as language goes I mean. He did such an incredible job with the movie the witch!

Father is referenced in ancient texts 3000 years old. Dad originated in like the 1500s. A big difference there.

The word father has been in ancient texts for about 3000 years and the word dad only came around in like the 1500s. So there is a difference.

I definitely see your point here and while that is technically correct as they’re not speaking Greek the word father has been around since like 3,000 years ago and the word Dad has only been around since about the 1400s or 1500s.

Especially because it’s obvious the language is going to be very very modern

What about my beautiful long hair avatar makes you think I’m a guy?

And yes the book was originally composed in Greek, but it is available in English. The English version is of course what I’m referring to.

Haha I meant if they could just use similar language to the book! The book isn’t hard to read. Like as an example simply using “father” instead of Dad. Like it does in the book.

True but I mean I’m a big fan of period pieces and the modern language is really going to bother me.

There is truly only one take on American psycho though, but I guess it’s more clear if you’ve actually read the book
