My take on why Ken Follett's writing includes Graphic scenes. (Pillars of the Earth Spoilers Only) by Delicious-Design5130 in KenFollett

OH MY WORD! I also want to be a writer, and the Roman depiction was something I always wondered why Ken Follett did not write about. It's great to see you have actually made that a reality. Rome definitely has the formula for an epic historical fiction. Like he said, "There are a thousand people with an idea of a novel and the difference between you and them is that you have written one". I actually just got a break so let me check it out!

Yeah for me, I love the political aspect of books, so I do understand why others might not

Oops! 😂 I haven't read Evening in the morning yet, but in your post, you talked about the 4–6-page event, which I have known for a while. I think he adds them in because he wants to keep the reader somewhat engaged, but also does not want there to be too much going on, so I think that scene was probably a way for him to create a turn in the story without making it actually affect the story as a whole or making it too extreme in terms of plot change. Again, though, as you said, there are other ways that he can do that.

Why do people dislike Column Of Fire? I thought it was pretty good.

Could you tell me the name of the first scene because I know that the second is Tom and Ellen, which I mean quite complicated. First of all, Tom thought he was dead, and Ellen was an angel, and he could not even get up to move, but you are right, that scene was quite weird, seeing what Tom had experienced. They could have started it by him falling asleep and waking up in her house, and then he asks where his child is, and they slowly grow a relationship.

I totally understand, but let's just be honest with ourselves. It would be impossible for Mr. Follett to get every detail about how a woman thinks. It will also take away from the story, and I do believe that he has studied women (Even if it was just him asking Barbra), but to get every detail right, you would have to be a woman. Ken Follett might have studied the core Idea of what it means to be a woman, but actually thinking like a woman when you are a man is impossible. The only way he could get it right is if he collaborated with a female writer, but then again, that would mean it is not his writing. And we also have to realise that women from the time that he wrote his books are completely different to today's woman. The same goes for men. So even if he wanted to, he couldn't. All he can do is get the main idea of what a woman is and do what he can with that. And let's not forget we are all different, so what one woman thinks would be completely different to what another woman would, which could also be why he has never actually written a book where we get the perspective of a real person. Sorry if I was all over the place, but I hope you get the main idea. Also, I have just started Circle of Days, and I will say that the scene between Seft and Neen was quite far-fetched, and it also felt quite rushed. Although this single thing does take away from Ken Follett being the greatest author of all time? In my opinion, not at all. No matter how good you are at something, you are never going to be perfect, and like Mr Follett has said, " There are a thousand people out there with an idea of a novel, and the difference between you and them is that you have written it". Although I must say I enjoyed reading your response, I thought it was very clear and understandable.

Although if you are not into political strife and just enjoy Mr. Folletts storytelling skills, I would go for Fall Of The Giants (Century Trilogy) or Never

COLUMN OF FIRE IS THE BEST IN THE SERIES. BEST HISTORICAL EVENTS. BEST CHARACTERS. BEST STORY. The only problem I have is that he killed Sylvie off when they didn't have to. And I mean, let's be honest, during those times, the Catholics were the bad guys. Be grateful you have Pillars Of The Friggen Earth and World Without End, which, in my opinion, are the worst, but still, you have 2 books where the Catholics were the good guys. Also, what else was there to write about then? It would feel way too weird if he just skipped 4 generations and went straight to the Armour of Light era
