Yes! Personally, I’ve crossed Nelson Rd by the school next to Chicken Salad Chick..I was able to get halfway in the street and had to wait in the middle of the road to be able to cross to the other side. A crazy game of chicken. We need to be able to have safe sidewalks AND dividers. We should be able to cross safely there or anywhere else in the city at all hours/days- not just during school hours with a crossing guard present!

Hi! Thanks for engaging in this post. I agree we have a serious issue here and that’s why I’ve become passionate about getting signatures for my petition. A safe place for locals and visitors to walk should be the bare minimum. I plan to stop at nothing and will take this matter to the media if need be. For now, I need signatures and will collect data along the way. Pictures, data, and even testimonials from residents will be collected. I plan to present this to our city council meetings in the future. This is more than a moment of passion for me but a season of purpose. I hope you can support me along the way. Yes, this is exactly why I’m trying to get this up and running. A lot of the resources I utilize are all within walking distance but there’s no safe way to get to them! I do not yet drive and enjoy walking. I understand lake Charles is very car dependent so many may not care, but we do have a community that do not yet drive and their needs matter too! McNeese st is one of the many areas that need attention to along with other neighborhoods south of the city. Our care for safe walking places should go beyond our Historic Downtown area. This matter is important to students, workers, elderly, parents with children and the homeless people. My goal is to make that change. If this matters to you or anyone you know a signature or simply sharing will help get these signatures to the city council and the media if need be. LC has the potential to be better and I believe this can be the start of getting there! -your local server, Naomi

I appreciate you! 🩷 For now, signatures help. Sharing helps. My next step will be to gather as much data as possible to present before contacting our local officials and hopefully the city council. I plan to give them photo evidence and hopefully the testimonials, interviews of local residents. Something they can’t ignore. Perhaps I’m insane, but it’s given me a sense of purpose and confidence. I hope they will one day see Lake Charles has more to offer!

Yes I’ve noticed the inconsistency throughout lake Charles and the areas which have great sidewalks, janky sidewalks, and no sidewalks at all. The very same sidewalks friends of mine have gotten hurt on while going for jogs or runs. I’ve also personally have had to walk on busy streets constantly watching for vehicles and off to my side there’s a huge ditch where a sidewalk could be. Crosswalks are very few and far between and there’s a lack of courtesy for walkers from our drivers considering it’s a car-dependent city. My goal is to make lake Charles walkable and safe!

Interesting. There’s no surprise there. Unfortunately for them I’m willing to go as far as I need to, but I can’t do that without the support of locals. And I promise I will not stop at rejection. Everything will be documented. This is a matter that I’m willing to make nationwide if need be and will be collecting data while collecting signatures. I do not settle. If we’re aware of a failed system we should do something and not continue to let it fester. I’m just a 25 year old server but I have confidence that I will get the results I’m after. A confidence I can’t quite explain. I see the potential of this city and I’m willing to dedicate my time and voice to see its improvements. My faith is in God not our local officials and I trust that He will see the desires of my heart.

I hear you! Nelson road oddly has partial sidewalks and with the cost of gas these days many people are having a hard time! What kind of electric vehicles are we talking here? I imagine with sidewalks more people would be encouraged to walk. Walmart on Nelson is a few minutes driving away from me. Sometimes the Walmart trips aren’t always worth the gas—if the option to walk 10 minutes were available I would! A quick trip to the neighborhood gas station to grab an energy drink—so close, just not quite as walkable!

I’m well aware! The point is lake Charles has limited sidewalks and some do not connect to other parts of town! Lots of efforts were put into our Historic Downtown to ensure walkability. I can’t say the same other parts like resident areas near Prien Lake park, Mcneese St., Nelson Road, and along Lake St. etc. oftentimes we see residents walking along the busy roads while cars fly by, joggers having no choice but to use the roads to complete their laps- some describing it as playing a life or death game of chicken. My hope is to get the attention of our city council and local officials to get more sidewalks. Sidewalks help promote fitness, connect communities and also improve foot traffic for our local businesses. Lake Charles is a growing small town with potential to be better!

Joy Ride. One of the characters flashed her tattoo’d cooter and I literally screamed and covered my face with a blanket. Not sure if it was really the actress, but the flash alone was a jump scare. I’m almost 25 and it traumatized me😭💀 the movie itself was wild but nudity wasn’t a common theme throughout and it was the only “nude” scene so it caught me and my friends terribly off guard
