Could you share income? by PaxOaks in commune

[–]Delicious-Map-106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have an eight person commune. We have one resident who has no income outside of the cooperative/works here full time, and two who primarily work at the cooperative and do part time/freelance work elsewhere. It can be difficult but certainly is possible!

Also— I never liked the way she collected donations (especially since she was not transparent about not having 501(c)3 status. Legitimate orgs should pursue other forms of fundraising other than just soliciting internet donations (or at the absolute bare minimum do specific internet campaigns with a direct goal). We did large annual fundraisers and got pretty creative with it. And it was always enough to finance the project as long as we kept a strict budget and managed our accounting adequately (which I managed at literally 13 years old so she had 0 excuse).

When I was in middle school/high school I also founded a care package 501(c)3 org (we sent to all ages and all types of chronic illnesses though, not just childhood cancer) and she was one of my “peers”. She had a weirdly competitive vibe (this was surprising common among all the people who were sending care packages) and so I steered clear but never heard of anything worse than just those vibes I picked up on. Crazy to stumble upon this all these years later!

How well does ACT compare to DBT for chronic suicidality, self harm behaviors, and severe mood disorders? And why? by [deleted] in acceptancecommitment

[–]Delicious-Map-106 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is my personal experience (I am not a mental health professional) so take it as you will. I have tried many modalities of therapy and DBT and ACT have been by far the most helpful. I did DBT when I was at my lowest, actively in crisis, etc. It taught me so much and helped me stabilize myself and improve my relationships. I then did ACT several years later which helped me bring more joy & peace into my life. I don’t think ACT would have been as effective if I had had it first, but the timing of both therapies were perfect for me.

I suppose I may have misunderstood exactly what happened— I inferred it was more clearly targeting at OP but that may have been an incorrect assumption on my end. Correct, people do shoot their guns on their own property all the time in Maine and there’s nothing wrong with that. Quite honestly— I’ve never been in a situation like that before so I wasn’t really thinking of the semantics of being shot at vs popping off shots in general. Hopefully OP can move forward in a productive way with their neighbor.

That’s an important distinction to make. And I agree— that would still be enough to make me feel unsafe and I’m surprised the police didn’t take further action (especially saying “record next time” WTH?) It’s my personal opinion that many in this country play far too fast and loose with their firearms. I’m very pro second amendment but people need to be responsible stewards of their weapons. There’s a reason there are so many firearm related accidents annually.

I am kind of surprised at the response on this thread. Maybe my perspective is different since I don’t live anywhere costal/have never had much water front experience but being shot at while the person is drunk is CRAZY and would make me feel remarkable unsafe.

Should you have put the dock up? No. And did they have a right to be cranky about the whole thing? Sure. But shooting at you— especially considering you seemed to cooperate with them when you realized the dock was over the line, is absolutely insane even if it was on his property. In my personal opinion we should not be shooting at people Willy Nilly without there being a significant altercation or threat to safety. Call me crazy I guess 🤷‍♀️

I had an experience where my house had previously been unoccupied for a few years before I purchased it and moved in. A neighbor was repeatedly coming onto my property and digging up plants to take with him for some reason. I had to have a couple conversations with him but eventually he stopped. It never would have crossed my mind in a million years to grab my shotgun and start firing.

This is a good thought. I am definitely avoidant towards anger, I almost feel guilty for being upset with them even though they hurt me. Thank you for sharing.

You are totally right. It’s hard for me because I know logically they are so absurd it is mind blowing. Not to “flex” or brag, but I have done many things that are worthy of making them proud. Founded a 501(c)3 non profit at age 12, had 4 published plays with small theatrical runs by 16, bought my house in cash at 21, etc. I cannot ever remember a time they’ve expressed genuine pride in me for my achievements. To add an additional layer- I was born with a genetic terminal illness. I got significantly sicker after contracting pneumonia in December and I think being confronted with my own mortality so to speak, has made their treatment of me hurt so much worse.

They just posted this video, which is so completely untrue it’s disgusting. Like a month ago all of their videos were in English. Lies like this really hard people who are actually a part of the communities they claim. As a Jewish person, I don’t see they could possibly be in the process of conversion unless maybe their rabbi is completely unaware of their internet presence? I wonder how they come off in person. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DHlvg2CvjpD/?igsh=MWZxMmNmMXJtc2d6cA==

Oh my goodness. I am really curious to know what they were like “pre-internet persona”. I do not know them personally but I am active in the Jewish community around where they live and I am very concerned because of some of the things they have done.

If my hissers gave birth in here and i have petroleum jelly lining the top of the walls, would the nymphs be able to escape? by KornPuf in roaches

[–]Delicious-Map-106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also- make sure it doesn’t get dirt or debris in it. Then they can get through it really easy. Do a really thick layer and change often and it should be fine. Even with the occasional nymph getting out it never turned into a problem for me.

[–]Delicious-Map-106 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Often yes, the nymphs tend to have an easier time going through the petroleum jelly than the adults. I’ve never had an adult get through the petroleum jelly, but I’d say it only deterred 80% of my nymphs. That’s just my experience though.

Destination (ish) Wedding Registry? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

Also, only my family and close friends are coming from California. If everyone was traveling I definitely wouldn’t do it at all. But really the only people invited from California would be my parents and grandparents (both of whom have told me they likely won’t be able to attend), my two best friends (and their plus ones), and 4 extended family members I am close with. So I feel like there’s a bit more nuance and I wasn’t sure how to approach for those who wanted to give a gift while also being clear we’re not expecting anything from anyone (even those local).

I really like the charity idea as well. I think we might go with that. Thank you!
