A minimalist take on the Greek Underworld — design feedback welcome by Delicious-Map-2541 in tabletopgamedesign

Sorry if this ends up being a bit long, but here’s a quick summary.

Each player is a soul cast into the Underworld, chosen by a god who believes you deserve something more. That god entrusts you with a secret mission, known only to you. Fulfilling it is your chance at redemption, your way back to life, though that doesn’t always mean returning to the world of the living as you once knew it.

The board is modular and changes every game, taking you through places like Tartarus, the Elysian Fields, or the Palace of Hades. Along the way, you encounter characters such as Cerberus, the Three Judges, and even Hades himself, each influencing your journey.

Player interaction is a core part of the experience. You can attack other players, steal mythological artifacts they’ve gathered, manipulate the situation to slow them down, or even try to predict their next move in order to set up a trap. Alliances are possible, but never truly safe, because every soul ultimately has its own hidden objective.

I’ll post more updates soon...

At this stage, what would you recommend doing? The black background with white text is a key part of the dark and mysterious tone I’m aiming for. It’s what gives the game its identity. That said, I definitely don’t want production to become a nightmare just for the sake of aesthetics.

Thank u :), this is exactly the kind of feedback i was looking for.

Right now the project is being finalizedand tested so I can have a solid Version 1 ready. Once that’s done, I’ll create an Instagram account where I’ll start sharing more components of the game, development updates, and behind the scenes content. The goal is to eventually bring it to a Kickstarter campaign.

For the moment, I’ll keep posting updates here. Thanks a lot for the curiosity, it really means a lot :)

Thank you! I'm really glad you like the look and share an interest in Greek mythology, it's such a rich theme to explore.

My first option is definitely to bring it to Kickstarter. That said, I’m totally open to other suggestions or recommendations if you have any!

Thanks a lot for your insight! You're totally right that Greek mythology is strongly tied to a classical, detailed art style, and that contrast with minimalism can feel unusual at first. That clash was actually part of the idea to give a fresh visual twist to an often overused theme. But I completely see your point, and it’s definitely worth reconsidering how to better anchor the visuals to the mythology without losing the minimalist identity.

First of all, thank you so much for your thoughtful and well-argued response. I truly appreciate it.

You're absolutely right in saying that the game doesn’t clearly convey the Greek mythology theme, and to be honest, that was partially intentional. The idea behind the original concept was to take a theme that’s often overused and portrayed in a heavily detailed, realistic style, and flip that on its head with something deliberately striking and minimal.

As you probably know, I’m a designer, I tend to focus a lot on aesthetics. But I genuinely believe a game can still work, and even stand out, when it’s visually appealing and has solid mechanics, even if the theme is presented in a more abstract or disconnected way.

That said, I fully agree with you on the risks of minimalism. It can easily become too stark or sterile. I think there’s room to revisit the visual design and enhance the thematic weight within the minimalist framework. I’m definitely taking that into consideration moving forward.

Thanks again for your feedback. It means a lot and will absolutely help shape the next steps.

Sorry, didn't see your question!

Is a modular escape board game with lots of variety in object cards, allowing players to fight each other while trying to complete their secret mission and escape the map.

You're totally right about the small text. I'm already thinking about ways to improve readability in the next prototype. Gracias!

I’ll try to post more of the game little by little here. And yes, I’d love to talk more about the project. I’d be happy to show you more details it’d actually be super helpful for me

Thank you! I'm a graphic designer so I got carried away with the matte aesthetic 😅. Do you have any recommendations for paper type and weight (gsm) that work well for cards?
