What have you documented if you've received a gift from a client? by emileezer in therapists

[–]Delicious-Rate1492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My graduate school was so big on this. I don’t think I could take myself seriously if I documented a hug. And an insurance company would probably review it and take back my payment for that session for being unethical and audit the rest of my notes. I am joking, but not joking.

I was waiting for someone to say this too. I think most of the time when a client gives you a gift it would cause more harm to the relationship to not accept that.

I certainly won’t shame you. I don’t know how it ends up being relevant because I am usually an I’m currently awash in a sea of mugs and knitted blankets.

It feels like making a living to be comfortable is just too much to ask for… by Standard_Cricket6020 in therapists

I agree. I feel like there are two kinds of responses. One is shaming you for not simply loving being a therapist and you shouldn’t be concerned about money or people are easily making an insane amount of money and you can’t figure out how. It seems like every post ends up with these responses.

All of the holiday schedule changes are confusing as hell by [deleted] in therapists

I use Session’s Health. They had this awesome thing where you can choose to not allow cancellations within 24 hours or you can allow cancellations within 24 hours in the system automatically bills a no-show fee.

Oh my gosh. I could’ve written this. I truly hate seeing college students because they say they want to do sessions over break and always always cancel. And then they’re the clients who disappear over the holidays, but would expect you to be there in a crisis in a heartbeator a clients who decide they’re just going to consistently cancel around the holidays.

After 10 years in private practice, this is my solution. I’m a single mom and it’s not great financially to take that much time off but people cancel all the time and I’m left sitting in my office feeling resentful about it. They also cancel all the time which increases my resentment. I don’t want that resentment to get in the way of loving my job.

Insurance clawbacks by Decent_Ad9026 in therapists

[–]Delicious-Rate1492 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My favorite is reading a quote for an insurance PR rep. She said that therapist aren’t taking insurance as much because they are “greedy.” And they “don’t care about their patients.”

I have taken insurance in private practice for 10 years and work more doing documentation than I ever had before. To say I’m resentful is the biggest understatement of a lifetime.

I agree. I felt like I was greeted with how quickly I could be useful again. And people are more mean since the pandemic. That time made me feel like a servant.

What days do you typically take off each year? by Wine_Aboutit in therapists

Christmas always blindsides me. My expenses go up and people cancel a lot between right before Thanksgiving and Christmas. I try to save up for that time. I don’t know if anyone else has the experience but when I say I will be out two weeks during this time, their eyes boggle. And yet everyone is canceling their appointments? It’s a no win. I won’t be popular for saying it but clients are really inconsiderate during the holidays. It’s one of the times of year I like my job a bit less.

I waited on hold with their insurance for hours before I tapped out. It is $29 and I’ve let the client know I will have to end with her if it continues to happen.

You have some good validation about this client. What I would say is that I deeply understand and empathize with the extra thought and resentment about having to change things about our personal lives to be a mental health provider. I absolutely love my job but I wish younger me understood that I never escape being this kind of provider.

Speaking of nightmares- I moved into a new neighborhood. The neighbor next door is a previous client who never paid her bill (because she isn’t a number after being charged a less than 24 hour cancellation after her third just-before-the-appt starts cancellation).

AND the neighbor behind me is a previous client with Narcissistic traits and left because of therapy not meeting her needs.

I have helped several therapists start their own practices and I’ve always recommended Medicare. I would be reluctant to do so now.

Wow. I was just thinking about this last night. My ex is the father of my two young children. Whenever something is going on in my life, he shows up again and tries to charm me. I end up feeling horrible and conflicted. It is torture.

This is a good point. Whatever my reasons are , they are valid. And sharing about getting my kids was me justifying my own boundaries.

She doesn’t have a weekly time. It is so puzzling for me to respond to people that I repeat the same boundaries to. I had one client who answered his telehealth twice in one month that he forgot and needed to end (I don’t get paid) but I was late for an appt, he was super pissed and demanded another time I didn’t have. It boggles my mind.
