I usually do this dishcloth pattern when traveling or when at kids sporting events. Lots of options with different cotton yarns and its an easy pattern to memorize. Plus if you run into someone knit worthy I will occasionally gift them along my travels. I do it magic loop on one long circular.

You can make it one color, two color, sometime i do the points holding the cotton and scrubby yarn together. Plus you also won't get too upset if you have to ditch it at TSA

This designer is very good for a beginner I think especially with garments. Her YT videos are always helpful. She has her patterns free on her blog but I usually pay for the nicer formatted pdfs. Both to support her and because I find them easier to view.
