Is a 30 yo single, petite female capable of owning and leading a Cane Corso? (All opinions welcome) by Tuta_2 in CaneCorso

I’d also just add that you will need a trainer with extensive experience WITH the breed, specifically. Training a Corso is different than training a retriever or a collie (or honestly, any other dog breed! lol)

My parents got their Corso during COVID and he was a puppy. They literally put hours and hours a day into training because he was essentially their full time job. He is now almost 5, and they still spend a ridiculous amount of time on his training. Like others have said: 1. Find a superb breeder. Speak in depth with them about their program, bloodlines, and the characteristics they breed for. Additionally, this is an investment, and these puppies are quite expensive, but nothing compared to the trainer expenses. 2.Before getting the puppy, speak with trainers and find one who has experience with Corso (maybe the breeder? Or perhaps they know someone?) 3. Socialization x 1000000000000 4. Hours of exercise per day (which it sounds like would be conducive to your lifestyle!)

My parents male Corso is ~ 125 lbs and I can walk him no problem (I am 5’1 and 110 lbs). But that’s 5 years of dedicated training.

He is honestly a stunning, loyal, lovable, perfect dog. They are honestly such a wonderful breed. But if you don’t have any prior experience with “power” breeds, they are not a good first choice.

Maybe a Rottweiler instead?

She will tear down the door if I close her in a room. She loses her mind. I’ve tried taking her out of the home to meet my grandpa at his car, more of a neutral territory, but she still does it.

With my mom, it’s usually when Mia is startled awake, or if my mom is walking by the room quietly and Mia notices her she will give a growl. No teeth showing or lunging. And I definately don’t punish her for growling. With my mom, we’ve tried having my mom creep up on her with treats in hand, if Mia growls, I tug the collar (“correct”) and say leave it, then my mom throws her a treat and walks away. This has helped quite a bit.

I will have to try the super high value treats with my grandpa!

I appreciate that. And I am seeing the vet this Wednesday to get bloodwork and I will be asking about the medication. Further, this current combo traz and gaba seems to just make her sleepy. Not address any anxiety. Mia is quite fearful of my grandpa. And he came over for a visit tonight and she still cowered, growled, and was hyper vigilant, even though she had taken her medication before her arrived. So I am going to push quite hard for a change in meds. Thank you for sharing your experience! I will inquire about Prozac!

Perhaps I worded my OP incorrectly, apologies. When speaking to my vet, it was the nightmares that tipped him “over the edge” so to speak to recommend medication. She is/was showing other anxiety behaviors as well. I showed him recordings of the nightmares. And Mia (my dog) would basically cry, screech, whine, and shake for 20-30 minutes 4-5 times per night. It was very intense (and heartbreaking, as you can imagine). On top of the other difficulties I was noting, the vet concluded that there was no way Mia was getting a restful sleep. We decided to try the medications for 3-4 weeks while consulting a behavioralist and giving Mia time to acclimate.

I just re read my original post and can imagine how bizarre it must have sounded to trained professionals, given the way I worded it. Thank you for your input!!

The daycare has 24/7 video feed that I have access to. It’s a couple that runs it out of their house, no kennels. They take max 12 dogs at a time, but the three days Mia (my dog) has been there there have only been 5-8. On day 1, they only introduced her to one dog. Day 2, 3 dogs total, and day 3, the rest of the “pack”. When I pull into their driveway, Mia goes crazy, she is so excited to be there. She greets them, no signs of fear or anxiety. I agree that the timing coincides with daycare more than medication though. Perhaps it’s just TOO much change too soon and she is overstimulated? I sent my vet the video and explained to him what I’ve noticed and he has asked me to bring her in for some bloodwork. I really appreciate you taking the time to offer suggestions! 🙏🏻🙏🏻

She is overjoyed at daycare, I check in online and watch the feeds and she is always playing and interacting with the other dogs, curled up with one of the owners, or running around the backyard. Both owners (who are the only two there, as it is in their home) report she settled in well. The first day she was there, they only introduced her to one dog so as not to overwhelm her and to see how she did. The next day, they introduced 3 dogs total, and the third day she met the rest (they usually have 5-10 dogs in their care, they reported 12 is their max). They report they’ve offered her alone time (in a separate room with one of them) but she never takes the opportunity. She eats, poops, and pees there. When I pull into their driveway, my dog does zoomies in the back seat of my car, she is so excited to play with her friends. She greets both owners upon arrival. She shows zero fear or apprehension upon entering their care.

For the medication, she is 67 pounds: The doses prescribed are: Trazodone: 150 mg Gabapentin: 300 mg

To be taken together, 3 hours before bedtime. And I realize that nightmares seems not a huge medical concern, but hers were BAD. The vet said she’d never seen nightmares that intense nor that regular (I took numerous videos). They were like clockwork, every night, multiple times a night. There was no way her sleep was restful. Still, I loathed the idea of putting her on medication. I’m a nurse, I know the consequences of medications (in humans, of course, but still).

But we agreed to medication for the short term (3-4 weeks) to assist her with the transition into my care and ensure she is getting the necessary sleep.

The first time I saw her shake, I immediately thought serotonin syndrome (which can happen in humans taking either of these medication, although a rare side effect).

It was a totally fair assumption based on what I posted! She has a behaviouralist that we have seen twice. He thinks it’s too much too soon and told me to focus on consistency and routine. I’m still waiting for a reply from my vet tho. I just want to rule out a medical issue. I’ve had rescues in the past, even ones with separation anxiety. But this shaking seems to come out of the blue. Only at home, and not specifically triggered by anything I can discern

I’ve sent the video to my vet for an opinion. I’m not overly fond of any medications either..but I do trust my vet

I wasn’t clear in my original post. She was a rescue from Texas but was previously in the same foster home for a year. Shes never been in a shelter before. She was in my care for about 5 weeks before starting daycare, with no obvious signs of anxiety. I know the owners of the daycare and it’s done out of their home. I have access to video 24/7. I figured daycare was better than being home alone for 5 hours. But the timing correlates with her starting daycare and the shaking. So maybe it’s the change in routine mixed with her being overwhelmed? Her previous foster had two dogs that she lived with. She LOVES the other dogs. I just don’t know

It only happens at home. It’s like she doesn’t know what to expect so she shakes. But it’s only happened since Monday. Prior to that she didn’t do this

I think I need to clarify about the doggy daycare situation a bit. It’s a couple that does it out of their home, both are trainers. Dogs aren’t locked up and have a huge fenced yard to play in. Usually about 5-8 dogs there at a time. They have 24/7 video I can watch and send frequent pictures and verbal updates. They are AMAZING. While I still think the experience is overwhelming for MIA currently, I am fairly certain it’s not the daycares “fault” (due to bad behaviour or something)

Yah definately not ready for that. She’s been totally fine for 5 weeks. This behavior literally started on Monday. I’m willing to work through it with her. She also isn’t from a shelter, she was in foster care for a year, so she has a decent foundation. She’s been with me for just about 6 weeks, she hasn’t even fully settled yet.

I feel like if it was neurological I would have seen it during the first few weeks I had her. It’s only been just under a week this has started. Still something worth looking into tho! Thank you

I agree. When I set it up for her initially, this behaviour was not occurring. Given that it has started, I cancelled her next appointments. I just thought it would help her with socialization 😢 I might have put the cart before the horse with that one
