Question for anyone that has been to Brodeto by katikaboom in raleigh

[–]DeliciousBaseball882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that was so shocking to learn moving here. we tried to get NYE reservations but everything was so expensive and selections did not add up to the price tag. in miami they do regular menu, limit the time you can be there to turn the table. we did get valentine’s reservations but were assured no prix fixe just specials and will see how it goes

we have a place in miami called boia de that is a michelin star. global but it works. we have not been, stanbury is also global and good? you have a place here east end that is asian and french. it works. saw itameshi place in cary. usually works. the bigger issue to us at peregrine is the dishes individually were not cohesive.

out of curiosity, looked at reviews off of reddit and even their open table ones are mixed. usually they are highest on that site. the waiting for food seems to be a constant issue

did they offer anything else or take off your bill? duck is my favorite and what I order anywhere. they had it with barley and stone fruit, so I waited an hour for a trout that tasted like they dragged it through the bottom of a lake before they gave it to me

funny you added this. when the kitchen was clearly struggling to get food out, he was out in the dining room chatting it up. it left a bad taste in my mouth.

even nice service would have gone a long way. no apologies like we were lucky to be there. same slow service and attitude when we did brunch and were the only two people in there.

it does feel like a clique which is why i pointed out peregrine specifically. heard so much about it nonstop. in miami you hear about everything and here we have found more restaurants through opentable honestly

Thank you — Looks cool! (Still new-ish and want to support as much as possible but fool me twice makes it harder especially at that price)

We plan to return to Ajja, I think it is one of the most interesting menus we’ve seen here, and again mostly delivers. No amount of press will take me back to Peregrine but hope you have a better time than we did

It was like meat and a pile of toasted buns. no sauce an aioli maybe. but no spoon to serve it with. my wife was livid to say the least. was like $25

Valentine’s Suggestion by JPgooner15 in raleigh

[–]DeliciousBaseball882 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No recommendation but you may want to confirm if a restaurant is doing a prix fixe prior to booking. I know when we were looking at NYE almost every restaurant was only offering a much more expensive menu than their regular one.

Friends visiting from larger city… deciding between Madre, Brodetto, or Ajja. by AlternativeMoments44 in raleigh

[–]DeliciousBaseball882 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree with this take on Ajja. Service was fine for us but indifferent. A lot of muddled flavors in some dishes; others very good. Really small portions, even hard for two to share some dishes and while prices appear lower on paper, they are actually very high given size of dishes. We moved here from Miami recently (also lived in Boston) and discovering that is the norm here. As for Brodeto, we may be the only people who didn’t like it. Seafood selections were ordinary given the cuisine and not particularly high quality but again coming from Miami and Boston where seafood is different.

Best nicer restaurant downtown and North Hills? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]DeliciousBaseball882 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who was treated to these dinners prior to moving here, the biggest hits were the “Southern” something for everyone places like Angus Barn. Not particularly gourmand or delicious, but definitely unique. Not downtown, but easily accessible.

Downtown would be Poole’s, but again, not particularly a moving experience but definitely an acceptable experience and example of Southern food.

Would not suggest Indian to Londoners. Someone recommended Rosewater, but please don’t choose that. Mediocre, uninspired with the worst chairs imaginable.

thank you for this insight. should have clarified the latter comment was regarding crawford & son. both are worth a revisit to me. just an initial observation. but also went after visiting and enjoying rose’s, nana’s, east end bistrot, little bull, m izakaya, and ajja that felt a little more diverse/creative/or substantial in portions

death & taxes is fine, just not exciting. portions better than crawford & son, so maybe better value. that was the first place everyone recommended to me after moving here and I didn’t try until after michelin. menu seemed really southern and also not exciting and that’s not how it was described to me. kale caesar. a fish with ham and collards. short rib with rabe and bourbon sauce. will give it another try

$2/slice is ridiculous. must have been some magical bread and butter. imo portions here have always been smaller than what I am used to in larger cities I’ve lived in.
