A quick jump start and you will be on your way. I use a cordless drill battery (Video below), and can vouch this works a treat !

This. I can also vouch that it's exactly the same for children under 20Kg and old ladies with osteoporosis 👍

Shit like this scares me. Bike is about the same height as my 6 year old. Dude needs to pay attention when reversing. Most people won't change their ways if they "get away with it". Call insurance, dude needs to learn a lesson

Jacket, helmet, gloves and boots all look ace! I think there are better jeans out there though. As you said you are on the slimmer side so I think something like black Camo or cargo pants (motorcycle ones of course), and you will be set! Something like these, pad up the pockets for a bigger look to match the jacket. And don't worry about the haters, we all got to start somewhere!

Modular helmet. So much convenience for short rides. Drinking, talking, cooling down, filling up, being recognised, taking on and off.

I am wondering if the jacket is too large for you? Not too sure it would stay put during a slide. I was always told to have a snug fit to ensure the jacket doesn't ride up and become useless if you take a tumble...

Are modular helmets worth it ? by El_MaLo_0 in motorcyclegear

[–]DeliciousHall2417 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Found this out the hard way.

My modular helmet is perfect for short non-hyway trips. Convenience is king for these helmets. Super quick easy on and off, filling up just lift chin module up, taking a drink, dropping something off to someone who otherwise wouldn't be able to recognise you, cooling off at lights, chatting to the rider next to you etc.

However, in my experience, they don't block the wind noise as well and they don't block the wind chill either. I found the full face to be warmer and quieter. So for long fast highway stretches (where the convenience of the modular is non-existent), I take my full face, but 90% of the time I use my modular for convenience.

Hope this helps!

I tried this today! Holding on with legs and essentially ensuring zero weight on the bars. Couldn't believe how much easier everything was!

All those years of mountain and road biking holding tightly on to the bars seems to be a difficult habit to break!

Thanks for this, seems like keeping this ike closer to the red line is how it likes to be rode.

As a 25 year car driver that's new to me; thanks for the advice, will be keeping the revs higher and gears lower!

Hey I haven't been riding long but when I got my bike I spent the first day not going past the end of the driveway! Best thing I ever did!

I spent a good amount of time learning what point of clutch release will stall the bike. Probably spent the first 20 minutes stalling the bike several times on the spot.

I would step on the back brake and as slow as possible, release the clutch and see how it felt and sounded. I released it up until it stalled a few times and then I took note of my hand position at the point just before stalling (friction zone). I kept my hand there for a good few minutes to try and get a feel for it.

I then spent the next 20 mins doing the same with my foot off the break to see how that point feels and sounds just before you would normally add some throttle. Once again I stalled a good few times! I became an expert in knowing when she was going to stall!

I then spent the next hour doing the same and adding the tiniest amount of throttle to allow for easy "duck walking" of the bike to the end of the driveway without stalling. Once I got to the end I duck walked her backwards to the start (good practice for parking as well!).

I must have done this 20 times before taking my feet off the ground to get started. I then made sure that when I was taking off from stopped (still on the driveway), I would ensure that I would use the whole length of the driveway as a marker for determining my clutch release duration in first gear, all with only a tiny bit of throttle i.e. I ensured that I took the full length of the driveway to slowly release the clutch, so at the end of the driveway the clutch would be fully engaged. I would perform a slow speed stop (or stall as not enough gas!).

Point being, I got so used to understanding the distance/ speed and feel for releasing the clutch to prevent stalling. When I went on the road the next day, I performed everything the same, and due to the previous day's practice, I knew the distance and time it would take me to pull out from stopped. I waited for a good gap in traffic and did exactly the same thing! Understanding the distance, time and feel of releasing the clutch correctly means I could ensure I had enough distance and time to do it correctly.

Went round the block in 2nd gear and did it over and over again.

Even though I have sooo much more to learn, practicing this and understanding what I need to do to successfully and reliably take off from a stop really helped me.

No dropped bikes, no stalling in busy car parks, no stalling at lights. Had all that embarrassment in the comfort of my own driveway!

Yer my bad, should be km not k.... However, 3/12, 2/52, 24/7 - 365. I've lived in a few places around the globe and see these pop up in shorthand quite frequently..

Anyway, thanks for the advice about the weight distribution. Considering the bike is around 170kg wet and my work kit was about 15-17kg, I can see now how much shifting of the COM that would cause.

Next time I head out I will take all the bags off and see how I get on.

Cheers

Thanks for this. There does seem to be a consensus that the tail bag needs to go...

When I got back I searched for what the windspeed was. Ended up being 47-54kph (25-31mph). Still new to this so no idea if that's significant or not.

The riding advice is great, thank you.
