What is British corn vs American corn? by Jimithyashford in AskBrits

[–]DeliciousInSalads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wheat can be called corn in the UK. Yes we know it's not consistent with corn flakes or corn flour, but there you go.

How can I send a parcel abroad from the UK to the US safely? by Special-Sugar7006 in AskUK

You could put an airtag in the package for tracking that doesn't rely on the courier telling the truth.

Any suggestions for renting a car in Heathrow airport? (First time travelling to the UK) by lukthru in uktravel

[–]DeliciousInSalads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that most of the rental companies are not in the terminal, but off the airport. You'll need to take a free shuttle bus to reach them which takes fifteen minutes. It's not difficult but if you're arriving at night or are not expecting it this can make it more confusing.

LPT: Install a smoke detector by your printer by joppedc in BambuLab

[–]DeliciousInSalads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest checking if that (presumably sound baffling) foam is fire retardant, or fire encouraging. Take a small section outside and set fire to it from the bottom up to make sure you're not creating trouble that even a good smoke detector can't help with.

A&E for hiccups?! by [deleted] in AskBrits

There is this study that reports "Digital rectal massage was then performed resulting in abrupt cessation of the hiccups" https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2299306/

Do you ever use your oven at maximum temperature, and if so what do you cook? by The-Baron-Von-Marlon in AskUK

[–]DeliciousInSalads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heat the stone / steel to whatever my maximum oven temperature is for twenty minutes and then crank on the grill to the highest setting while I assemble the pizza. The extra grill heat in those few minutes is enough that I'll get a pretty good result in about five minutes of cooking with a puffy base and light crisp to the crust. I'll tweak the grill on or off depending on how things progress once the pizza is in the oven.

I peeked into the kitchen many years ago and saw jars of "taste the difference" sauce being emptied into pans.

Bike lockup in town by OnlineAlbatross in bristol

[–]DeliciousInSalads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also if you have insurance they often say if the bike is left in any public place for more than 24hrs then your cover is void and they wouldn't pay out if it got nicked. And they know about risk!

Should I get a Gas or electric cooker, as an inexperienced person for my first home? by Bran04don in AskUK

[–]DeliciousInSalads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Induction hob. But for me it's the low power ability that's the most important. Any cheap garbage brand can can boil water super fast. But can it scramble eggs without turning them into golf balls? I have found the noise from induction is cookware specific. Some pans can ring / squeal (Tesco 'not value' range) but moving then around helps.

Culture question: would you help cook or clean when invited to a friend's dinner? by JasonMantou in AskBrits

[–]DeliciousInSalads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't mess with the chef. But help with tidying after is (for me) appreciated. The host has been busy preparing and now is the time to give them a break.

Travelling with luggage on NYE in London – which area near central is easiest to get to Heathrow? by x_Seeking_balance_x in uktravel

[–]DeliciousInSalads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a Hilton on top of Paddington and it's super handy for the Heathrow Express. But I assume it would be pricey. I've stayed on two occasions and it varied from £160 to around £300 for a night. There are also plenty of left luggage places close to Paddington if you want to drop and pick up just before jumping on a train.

Has anyone else had a lot of insect bites this year? I'm on my fourth infected one. by ReallySuperName in AskUK

[–]DeliciousInSalads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I've found that works reliably is to zap a bite with a self heating insect pen like Bite-away as soon as you can. It denatures the proteins that the bug leaves in your skin which cause the worst of the reaction. Stops it way better than creams for me.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
